As sweet as shifter karts are, the gearing is fairly pointless... it's either continually in the wrong gear or not having a hand on the wheel
Single speed or two speed with a clutch (not centrifugal) would be sweet IMO

A friend of mine runs one as his auto-x car. He let me drive it once. Those motors are so high strung that the powerband is only about 1500 RPM wide, which isn't much when you're talking about a motor that revs to 14000 RPM. These things make roughly 50 hp from a 125cc 2-stroke. For reference, a 250cc 2-stroke MX bike makes about 45 hp from the factory.
It was a hell of a handful on an auto-x course. If you lift off the throttle, you need to downshift once. Touch the brakes? Plan on dropping 3 gears. Between all of the steering between slaloms and gates and trying to keep it in the right gear, it's extremely taxing. Plus they're just really twitchy and can snap into a spin in a heartbeat.
Oh, and no seatbelt, no suspension, and the seat is basically a fiberglass bucket with no padding.
