Top Gear review...

At first I was, er, what the...

But I'm really starting to dig it.

I love that instead of a traditional spoiler, the bodywork literally bends.

So I guess this is side by side with the Senna in their hierarchy, with the Senna being the ultra track car, and this being a GT? THis is the only one of the modern McLarens (anything else except for the F1) that I find interesting.

That badge made out of a combination of pure gold, and carbon fiber is idiotic though. I mean who would come up with the idea to combine one of the lightest materials, with one of the densest elements?

FoMoJo

I noticed an article on this earlier.  It's different enough to be interesting.

Can you imagine embarking on a lone 'round-the-country trip in that thing?  Ermagherrrrrd.

I can't say I find this or the senna even close to attractive

Amazing. If I were in the market for an exotic McLaren would probably be it. A 540C is more than enough.

I approve. It's no F1 but then nothing is. Crossing my fingers for the return of the V12.

It's 1990s streamline aero.  They could do better.

To what end? Who is buying a car like this that could utilize tons of downforce anyway? This shits all over something like the Senna or even the P1 in terms of desirability.

Form follows function.

Compare to the beautiful and functional (cutting edge) aero of the Valkyeri.  McClaren is just being lazy with this and the Senna... Just like their current F1 program

Valkyeri's aero is anything but beautiful. XJ220 criticism is legit though.

Personally I am all for supercars that put form over function as they are being honest. 1 ton of downforce at 120MPH.... who gives a shit, who is buying these cars and driving them that hard?

McLaren has already done the hi-tech racer thing with the Senna and the P1.  Now they have something that requires air-search radar to maneuver the back end of the car around.

They should rebuild the F1.  N/A V12 without hybrid bullshit, modern tires, 6-speed, maybe some of the 720's suspension tech, weight savings, and satellite radio.  Like an F1 Evo, evo, evo.  Make every little thing about the F1 just a little bit better.

I forget who at McLaren said it but they basically called the V12 doodoo

This is what... 25 year old design

You see, good design is not a fad, or a season's fashion. Calling something old is the level of criticism one expects from junior high school girls with a new pair of shoes.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Go back a few more years and there was this, the '87 Olds Aerotech ST:

Good design is good design, but it is a bit cheap to rehash what's already been done. The XJ220 came from a clean sheet; the Speedtail.... "drew from a source of influences". It won't serve as a reference point like the XJ220 or cars of that era.

But neither will the Senna, because it's fucking hideous. As I said before; aerodynamics are no excuse for ugliness in a street car free of homologation and cost constraints.....

XJ220 definitely had design influences...

This was built in the late 30s:

The XJ was clearly inspired by a number of things as well, from the classic E-type to many of the mid engined supercars of the '70s and '80s.

The speedtail was probably inspired by its own big brother, the F1 longtail:
