Its a DRZ 400s. It's street legal too. The main reason was to address illegal rec vehicle use. But it's actually excellent for searching, etc. You can basically check every trail/park in town within a few hours, it's very efficient. Much more useful than a Harley.

No. Its been dumped, but it's a dirt bike so that's expected. No damage. We have one guy right now who rides it. He can ride the Harley too if he wants but with the Suzuki there's no place that you can't go.

I wouldn't say it's "fast". It has plenty of power for what we do. But, it's not any faster than most cars. It tops out just shy of 130. Remember though police cars are spec'd more for durability than speed. The CV is actually a good police car especially considering their price which comes in around $22-23K. Add equipment and that goes up significantly but most of that lasts through 3-4 cars.
I saw one cop here in a CV one time...he had the gas floored and was driving as if he was a race car driver. And he didn't have his lights or sirens on. He like thought he was racing or something... <_< :P And I said to my brother (we were in the MC Z34) that we should go race him... :lol: We probably could've taken him. :praise:
I've had three of those pull me over! Two were unmarked, though.
In Syria they use '70s Peugeot 405s. Meaning we never stop.
However, there are a few Opel Omega Wagons in every city, and those can catch just about anything over there.
Our local PD uses Crown Vics and a few Expeditions. I like the Crown Vics, but I still don't know why the Burr Ridge PD needs Expeditions. Ridiculous. A lot of PDs around here use Impalas, too. I've also spotted an undercover Camaro on I-294.
The locals use Impala's and Expeditions. (I think we have 2 Impala's and 1 Exp) And the staties use CV's, Impalas, and Expeditions. Oh and they have an Excursion for the K-9 unit. :blink: :P
Our PD has 9-10 CVs and an Explorer for the K9 unit.

Catman made a point about "all the gear", and that's something that people sometimes fail to realize. One of the main reasons police departments in the US still use the larger cars is the gear they carry. Most police organizations in the US and Canada still have their highway patrol units charged with large areas of mostly unoccupied territory, so unlike many European and Japanese police units, they need to carry a lot of gear. Plus, while I'm certain there are "bad" roads in Europe or Japan, many rural US & Canadian police units still have to patrol dirt roads, gravel roads and rougher terrain. Most of these units will have 4x4's, but even the basic cruisers still need to be able to take some punishment, thus the use of big, heavy, full frame vehicles.
In contrast, more and more of the urban US police units are switching to smaller vehicles, due to lowered need for hauling capacity, less need for high speed pursuit and increased need for fuel economy. My local town police use Impalas, along with a few Cherokees for winter driving. (Don't know what they will replace the Cherokees with.)
I fully expect Dodge to get back into the police cruiser market with the Charger, as signs have already been seen of this move. The Magnum would work well, also, given the gear requirements I mentioned.
One time we had to help a CV get out of our driveway because it couldn't go up the hill. She said that ever since they replaced the old radios with the newer small ones, they don't have a big receiver thing in the back so she doesn't get any traction! :P

I would think they would have enough weight back there to get good traction regardless of the radio. If not, they should just throw some sand bags in the trunk during winter.

I think that one would be the most fun. Our local department has two of those, a firebird, a new unmarked Impala which I don't like because I'm not used to looking for it, two new Expeditions, a new Explorer, a Jeep Cherokee, two police speedboats (I don't know boats, so sorry, no names for them) two Wave Runners, and a river boat, and a few horses (unmarked, would you believe it?) to name the non-standard police cars. Over here, I've noticed the E-Class station wagon is a popular choice for the Polizei.

Most Highway patrol units wil switch to snow tires of some form during the winter (well, depending on the department. FLA or southern CA obviously have less need than Montana or the Canadians.) But even these aren't normally true "snow" tires, but mud & snow rated radials. Very few manufacturers make true snow tires any more. Some regions with heavy snow fall expectations can still use studded tires, but this is rare, as they chew up the road surface.
The CV is a full frame platform that also underlies the Gran Marquis and Town Car (modified). Factor in that most police cars in Canada & the US are CV's, and even the Mexicans use some, plus the large number of CV's in taxi fleets, and it's VERY cost effective for Ford to build the car. It is an old platform, although it has been updated numerous times. But it serves the purpose. Uni body vehicles would be hard pressed (pun sort of intended) to hold up as well as the full frame CV and still keep running. I've seen CV's (and Caprices) used to ram vehicles multiple times and have little more than cosmetic sheet metal damage. Plus, there's that carrying capacity issue. Full frame vehicles can generally haul more weight, and most police cars, as noted, carry a lot of equipment.
For all it is an old platform, the CV fulfills it's purpose very well. It could be re-designed, but that would destroy the cost effectiveness of the vehicle, and the price is a factor for the various police, fire and tax organizations.

i know it sounds weird but yes it does snow in texas... i live in the southern part so not only is it hot but snow is rarer than a blue moon down here....although we did have a few flakes fall christmas eve...they melted as soon as the hit the ground...it was enough to wonder if the roads were gonna freeze...

We have gotten a couple of inches a couple of times and my parents don't like to drive in it simply because no one else knows how to (however, they do, as we used to live in Idaho).
Yeah...it's very funny when you see out-of-state cars up here trying to drive in the snow and on the icy roads. It's very comical, until they cause an accident, of course. Most of them slide through the intersections because they don't know that ice offers close to 0 traction and they need to make their braking distances at least 50% longer. :rolleyes: Duh. Then it's funny watching them sit there and spin their tires trying to start moving...uhh...let off the gas, it might help. :P
Around here they use a beater toyota and drop in a 350 and a good tranny, its stealthy. :ph34r: They are so freaking hard to see but you can here them they run glasspacks.
