As usual, kudos to Mazda for pushing the state of the art in ICEs forward. I hope that HCCI sets a high efficiency bar for the industry to follow.

Yeah, Mazda is really pushing the frontier here. That being said, I hope it does not turn out to be a disappointment like Nissan with their variable compression engine.

We will see. To me, not recapturing energy in braking is the bigger wasted opportunity.

What benefit is there in that for a non-hybrid?

Might have to replace my current Mazda6 with a Mazda3 hatch or a CX-5.

IMO hybrids are the most logical way forward for ICE efficiency. Would be great if Mazda could find a way to make hybrids fun

The 2.5L Turbo that Mazda just came out with is already pretty close to being a diesel in power delivery.  This thing will probably be another step in that direction.  As an enthusiast, not sure I care too much to be honest.  Every time a new engine comes out that promises all these MPG improvements, the real world benefits aren't really that great while actually driving the thing is kinda boring.

OK.  So the intended comment was "Mazda should be pursuing electric hybridization instead of just focusing on cleaner and more efficient ICE".
