Title: Miata vs Camaro/Mustang
Post by: CaminoRacer on May 18, 2020, 09:24:03 AM
What should I replace my Mazda6 with eventually?

I won't have a garage spot for it, so used would probably be better than buying new.
I live in Utah where the roads are mostly straight and things are far apart.

You already got your hot rod, so it should be a Miata.

Bolt. Might not work for roadtrips but we could just rent a car

I might feel bad parking that outside all the time, though. NC Miata is half the price and maybe I wouldn't feel as bad?

:hmm:

I'd prefer a real blower belt instead of a serpentine, but I suppose the serpentine is easier to install & fit in the engine bay.

I voted ND but an NC would be a close second.

If you already have the El Camino, Miata all the way.  If you didn't have it, I'd have chosen one of the pony cars.

NC2 Miata. Track days? Club. Driver? Grand Touring. The folding hardtop or PRHT is durable and easy. Your wife will like it,too.

The extra space of the Camaro/Mustang would be nice, but also those cars feel like driving houses compared to the ND.

Get a nice used ND next year for like $15k max.

This is true. I don't know if I care for the turbo engine, though. I like torque, but not delayed torque. I'm spoiled by my V8 El Camino and EV

I find the power deliver on my 225 HP Z3 more satisfying than the 290 HP Golf for exactly this reason.

I'm probably 1 year out, max. Could probably get something at the end of the summer if I want to. So 2019 is unlikely, ND would probably have to be like a 2017 or 2018 at the newest unless I bought a new one.

You already have a V8 and a practical vehicle.  Arguably, the Camino also doubles as a versatile hauler if you need to pick up something bulky.  I feel like a pony car would basically scratch the same itch as the El Camino.  Miata would be very different from anything in the stable currently.  Granted, if all of your roads are straight and flat, the only added dimension it really brings is the open air element.  But it would probably be fun to take it to the occasional AutoX.  NDs are kind of an overdog in the stock class.

I've noticed other car enthusiasts will occasionally try to contest the Miata in some way. Most of them can easily take me in a straight line contest, so my tactic is to keep them going till we hit a nice hard corner, at which point I can leave them in the dust. Well, most of them, not other roadsters. One guy actually spun out and ended up facing backwards on a freeway on-ramp.  :praise:

If I lived back east near the Appalachians or in California near the nice canyon roads, Miata would be a sure-thing. Utah has some decent mountain roads but there's a lot of straight flat openness everywhere else. That's where a pony car is tempting, especially the newer Camaros and Mustangs that have V8 power and good handling. But, the cost of a V8 pony car is a decent amount more than a similar year/condition Miata. And while their handling is excellent on paper, they're still heavier and bulkier than a Miata and don't have that same nimble feeling.

Just don't try that against my El Camino with it's 200 treadwear autocross tires - the front end has so much grip that it'll break the spindles before it understeers

The other piece will be fuel, tires, brakes, etc...  All much more expensive with the pony cars.  Every time I talk tires with my AutoX buddies who have Miatas or hot hatches with 16 or 17" wheels that they can buy a set of 200TW tires for less than half what I pay (and get more life out of them to boot), I start thinking about trading in for an ND.

There's a lot of structural reconfiguration required, and not just to relocate motor mounts.
Title: Re: Miata vs Camaro/Mustang
Post by: shp4man on May 21, 2020, 09:59:05 AM
Another thing about a used Miata. They are basically toys or weekend cars, and tend to accumulate less miles than a regular sedan. So if you decide to go that route, you want a box stock, unmolested example with low mileage and a good Carfax.
The idea being, every used car is there for a reason, and the reason many Miatas get traded or put up for sale is the owner can no longer afford the toy.
You don't want a car that's been raced to death, or a regular sedan that got dumped because of some hidden trans or engine issue.

Best fit is a mild Windsor.  An R-code would be fun, but the chassis might complain.

True, but LS-swapped Miatas are extremely popular.

Why would you want a civilized "sports" car?  Higher levels of adrenaline when it's a bit wild and raucous.

Civilized from a modern point of view. Car still feels raw and connected to the road, with an updated touch. Like nav etc...
