Title: Blue or Grey? Model 3
Post by: NomisR on July 01, 2021, 03:41:18 PM
Since my delivery date for my Model 3 is still 3 months away, I can still change my mind.  I wanted the Blue, but honestly, it's not the blue I wanted, in the dark, I don't like it so much, but it looks good in the bright lights..  My wife said I should get grey, I really have no opinion on it, I don't hate it, it's just a non-white color that I don't mind..  I'm planning on doing some mod so here's pictures with the front end..

I can't find a good picture of the blue unfortunately, what do you guys think?

Does the grey have a normal clear coat or a matte one? Gloss clear is much easier to take care of.

It's supposed to be a metalic gray

The grey looks a bit dull.

I think I'd do the blue. I like the red the most, but it's probably not worth an additional $1k.

I followed a brand new blue Model 3 home and thought of you. It's a really good looking color.

Go with the gray.

How's it going up there in LA, man? I listen to KFI a bunch trying to keep up.  ;)

You said you were neutral on grey (pun intended) and didn't like the blue when it was dark.  This tells me you are very particular about which shade of blue looks good and you don't really like this shade. So given that, I would get the grey.

I like the grey.

Ok. Stop. Find a parking lot and look at it- 80% of the cars out there are some version of grey.
It doesn't matter how good the grey looks in a picture- on the road it will look like every other car out there. Teslas are already somewhat bland in the styling department, they don't need to blend in any more than they do.

I have generally preferred blue cars...I just think the colors looks good without being ostentatious. That being said I generally prefer lighter/brighter blues. I am actually not really a fan of the blue on my current car since it is a darker shade. The tesla you posted looks similar in shade to my current car.

I actually think grey can look good on cars. It is a subtle color but with certain shapes and in particular shades it can be flattering. I also think it looks better with black accents than most primary colors.

Is the Midnight Blue Metallic an extra charge?  It looks good.

I thought you had mentioned that in another thread.

I like the lighter blues myself like with my old Rx8.. this color for me might get old simply because it's a darker hue.  I didn't like it when i see it on the Model S which is why it's giving me a pause.

Both colors are $1000 more.

I'm looking to mod the car hence the front end, but I guess most people can't tell the difference between the stock front end and the aftermarket...  here's another gray with the wheels.. i think the original picture i posted might not be the right color.  There wouldn't be any chrome accents on mine though, it'll be all black instead for the 2021 cars.

Blue without question. From say 20 feet it's a very sharp looking car. However, the blue, like black, shows paint problems, which are manifold with Tesla vehicles (orange peel).

The gray is actually a dark silver, and with the black turbine wheels, looks pretty dour.

Now that I have a white car, I'd go with the white. Looks sharp with the black wheels and will hide to a great extent paint problems.

What about Red?

These aren't the standard front end by the way if you can't tell, it's a aftermarket bumper that I plan on getting..

I've never really been into dark colors, the last 2 cars are really an anomaly for me.  I like brighter colors but dark colors seems to be better for avoiding cops though.

I don't normally like red either..  chances are, i'll most likely end up with the grey.  I might end up wrapping it to the blue that I like though.

I can't understand why.  The original paint quality may not be the greatest but it's not horrible.  When I think of who gets a vehicle wrapped, I think of the teenager or 20 something year old son of a multimillionaire or billionaire who has an exotic car or two and money to burn or a small business owner who's using a wrap to advertise their business on their car.  I never see wraps on non-exotic ICE cars.

I think its because Teslas are in fact rather bland in the styling department, so people want them to blend in a little less.

It's the lack of color and detail of the car.. combined with the fact that there's so many especially in California.  That's why I'm planning on getting a new front bumper so it would look less bland..

They're running it past the capacity it was designed for.  Just not enough paint on most cars.  It's crazy thin and they totally miss spots sometimes.  There are class action lawsuits over how bad it is

Yeah when I looked at it (just casually) it seemed like most folks really only expect to get a few years before it either needs to be unwrapped or rewrapped.

I suppose one advantage of a wrap is that it might prevent paint chips from people opening their doors into the side of your car.

That's really not true though because the wrap is so thin, it doesn't really protect from much.. although since Tesla's paint is so thin as well.. it's probably an improvement.

They're probably not doing any better today considering how many more cars they're producing today.

From what I've read, a high quality vinyl + a professional install will get you 5-7 years, especially if you take care of your car (garaging it + properly washing the vehicle by hand rather than through a carwash), but a good install is $4k+...

Vinyl will protect against small paint chips (like a clear bra would, though vinyl wraps aren't as sturdy or thick so the protection against mechanical damage isn't as great) as well as fine scratches, UV damage, pollution fallout, bird droppings, etc.
