I can't think of a compact or mid-sized crossover SUV that isn't a bit girly. The Ford Edge is not too bad. Jeeps are manly but hopelessly unreliable.
Where's a male to go who wants a practical SUV? I'd say you's have to trade away the advantages of a crossover and go hairy balls 4-Runner.

Imo, a manly car should have a lot of curves and swoops and put one in mind of a gorgeous woman; Jaguar XK140 is a perfect manly car. A girly car, I imagine, must be square and boxy.
Many cross-overs, or cute utes, have a girly vibe to them partly based on styling and partly based on what's the demographic of the average driver of them. Prior generation Lexus RX's seemed very girly to me but the current generation predator mouth one does not. Some of it also depends on color choice. Black and smoke grey butches up almost anything.
Subaru Crosstrek, which I own, didn't strike me as very girly. Lesbian maybe. Nissan Juke as well, although very polarizing styling.

Of Torque), I can strongly recommend the Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE. It may be a little more expensive than some of the other choices, but comes with some rather nice features. As well, I find the appearance quite pleasing, rather a good blend of attractiveness with a slight touch of manliness and just a hint of elegance.

The QX is certainly follicularly-gifted in the plums department but it makes no sense - heavy and thirsty, with performance I'd only use when I'm not sitting at a stop light: sitting at stop lights is 99.7% of my time behind the wheel. A CX-5 has the same cargo volume, is nicely designed, and just as good for sitting in stationary traffic staring at a Camry's dented bumper, all this while burning less gas. If I could get it in that Jeep Rhino color it would go some way to offsetting its bald bollocks.

The ones in good running condition are still pulling 8 to 10 grand. (Check out some youtubes to see what you're actually likely to get for 5 grand). Many of these are high mileage units, and I'm told to avoid anything that was ever up-armored (the extra weight is hell on them), or that has an open machine gun ring (it's been raining and snowing on the electronics).
But yeah, people have gotten them and had a really ball busting toy for not a lot of money, but it's something that comes with a few caveats.
They're just so large. I'd love to have one, but they wouldn't fit on a lot of the trails I run.

This is true. They make more sense out west. Occasionally you see the M-gators for sale, which are military prepped John Deere Gators, and they go pretty cheap.

Well the Ram is actually the only recommendation I've made so far, and it was mostly tongue in cheek because of the sudden truck conversation.
I've got a friend whose Jeep is about to be lemon'd. It's been in the shop for nearly a month. I think it was a Compass or Patriot or something...can't even remember because it hasn't been in their driveway for so long (dealership gave them a loaner Cherokee). They had transmission issues about a year ago when the car was brand new, and this time a seal in the sunroof failed and the entire inside got fucked while it was parked at an airport while he and his wife were in Norway. Still not fixed and they're nearing the 30 day mark or whatever it is to officially say "fuck you, you owe me a vehicle."
I will genuinely never recommend an FCA product to anyone ever outside of a Wrangler and maybe a RAM, though I'm partial to GM for trucks. They learned the lesson the hard way.
Why does FCA never have their shit together. It boggles the mind.

Hmm, I'm wondering about the 2017 Ridgeline. I have not read any bad reviews of it. Not good for the few who actually need heavy towing/work truck type stuff, but for most it's quite compelling.

Not really the same price. The ZR2 starts 10K more than the Ridgeline. A mid-level, AWD Ridgeline with comparable creature comforts is like 7K less than a ZR2 Crew Cab short bed.
You're right the Ridgeline is cheaper than I thought, but there are dealers already discounting ZR2s.

One of my neighbors has one. He's from Long Island. When I see him I think, "he wants to look like a Southerner but doesn't quite get it". We live in a cul de sac; he tows nothing and hauls nothing. It's all for image, which is fine. But I don't think the Ridgeline has a good image, if that matters.
It's kind of like the 3 row crossover of pickup trucks. People buy 3 row crossovers because they need a minivan but don't want to commit. The Ridgeline is for people who want a pickup truck but for whatever reason are unwilling to take a plunge with a proper truck. IMO anyway.
Of the full size American half ton pickups, the Ram has the most car like ride. An unloaded F-150 will get bouncy on a concrete freeway.

There's not much more than 100 lbs pushing down through the rear tire on to the tailgate. If that's enough to bend it, then it's way too flimsy to support a normal person standing or walking on it.

I sit on mine frequently enough and it seems plenty sturdy. My dirtbike fits diagonally with the tailgate shut, so no issue for me there, but I also step on it when hopping up into the bed. But me sitting on the edge of it is likely more weight than the rear tire of most motorcycles barely touching it.
Shit happens, but don't over think it.
I've never put much thought into it, just have seen that happen in the past so I know it can't be completely ignored. I sit on my tailgate but put it up while driving.

Sounds like an isolated problem with certain vintages of Tacoma. Also, some of those bent not from the rear wheel resting on the tailgate, but from the weight put on it from the act of loading the bike (weight applied through the loading ramp). The guys loading 400+ lbs sportbikes, in particular. Dirtbikes only weigh ~250 lbs or less.
I have seen several new Ridgelines around here. They are so weeeeeird looking. From front, it's an SUV. From the rear, it's a decent pickup.
From any side angle, it just seems ODD.
I totally dig it though- better ride for what 90% of urban truck drivers need them for. They still have that cool under-bed storage in the back, and I wonder how maintenance costs will compare to similar competitors..... (ie way better)
Yeah, the early Ridgelines look pretty odd with their raised bed sides. Totally ruins the lines.

This is weird because vets have no problem handling animal poop. This proved to be quite the task when our young one was in her poop eating phase.

Back to the thread: Yeah, I think a CX-5 is probably the least girly. But of my group of college friends, this is what all the wives drive:
2 CX-5s, 2 CR-Vs, Rav4, Tuscon.
This is what the men drive:
2 Accords, Mazda6, Mazda3, Civic. Then me with the 4Runner and S2000.
My brother drives a Rav4 though. It is kind of girly looking :huh:

I've heard this from some doctor friends too - Europe to the rescue! I will NEVER submit to a colonoscopy. So dangerous - from the general anesthesia to the fact endoscope is reused (and if not cleaned property it will basically kill the patient). It's all so disgusting. I'm not a scat fan, but if I have to, I will.
I was working with a client in Redmond that has invented an endoscope with a diameter not much bigger than a toothpick, and it's cheap enough that it's disposable after one use. Their first target market is arteries to inspect after a stroke or heart attack. Anyway, very slick, and that might make the process more palatable.
I've had two colonoscopies (both OK). I'm not dead yet. :huh:
