The problem is, unless the pic contains something distinctive and/or interesting, people lose interest.

You need a starting point for making educated guesses. Most post-modern cities around the world,  especially in North America, South America and Australia look too similar to each other. Doubly true if the city is one of the smaller ones. Europe, Asia and Africa are slightly better off in that respect as far as identification is concerned.
