Then I'd guess further East, Turkey, perhaps as far East as India.

Absolutamente!

I was going to give the clue that a car had been after both the town where the pic is, and also an event which takes place literally around the square in front of the tower, but that might not have helped too many people that much! (I'm referring to the Fiat Siena and Palio, by the way).
