Title: First FBC, now me. Somebody help me! A6 might be in my immediate future.
Post by: saxonyron on December 15, 2007, 12:37:09 AM
This is freaking me out like you can't imagine.  I'm a manual tranny die-hard all the way.  Here's the story.

- A4 lease is up in a couple months.
- New B8 A4 not out for another year.
- A5 not out till spring 08
- My A4 (B7) really is a little on the small side for me, and I'd like something a little bigger to better fit my 6'7" body and 37 kids.
- There's a real fine deal on a CPO '07 A6 with 4,700 miles on it - was in my dealer's loaner fleet.  Has what I want, just test drove it today (in fact, got it for the whole day).  Dealer is asking $6k under blue book, plus will cover my lease close out and any turn in fees.
- I could get this car for pretty much exactly what I was prepared to spend on a new B7 '08 A4 manual.  Plus it has a 100k warranty thru Audi.

Downside - only one.  The slushbox tranny.  Can I get used to this?  I don't know.  But honestly, it felt good sitting in a car that I truly fit easily in.  I more or less wear my A4 like a finely tailored suit.  This A6 had me reaching to find the pedals, and amazed at the elbow room.  Even the seat is larger.  As for handling and the important things, the car runs great.  I'm losing about 1/2 second to 60 MPH, but this thing cruises like a missile and corners real tight.  It's 7.1 sec to 60.  I was impressed by the sport attitude of this car.  I could be completely happy with this car if only my left foot had a pedal.  But reality is an ugly thing, and I think I might have to pull the trigger on this and do without a manual until I get myself into a larger B8 A4 or A5 (which isn't really larger than my A4, but it would be a worthwhile trade off) in a couple years.  I figure if I really can't stand it, I could easily "suffer" thru a year or so and sell it to my Dad, then grab the A4 or A5. But I love my A4 like crazy and am frankly horrified at the prospects of leaving the lease 2 months early and grabbing an automatic tranny.  One of my simple joys of every day is doing some perfectly matched downshifts and feeling the power roll out as my clutch foot directs the show.  You guys understand....at least some of you do!  (Chris V, I know...I know.)

Well, I'm looking for some feedback.  Unless the dealer pulls a shitty tomorrow, I'm prepared to sign on the bottom line.  :mask: The car is gorgeous, roomy, luxurious, fast and sexy.  It has the options I would have done myself (Premium Package, Gray with platinum leather interior.)  Only thing I would like that's not there are the memory seats, but my current ride doesn't have them and it doesn't bother me too much.

Again, I'm not leaving the manual tranny cult for good.  Just a brief sabbatical until the right models come up.  I could see me owning this for 2 yrs, then as I said, scoring an A5 or new B8 A4.  And it is a hell of a beautiful car, with a lot to offer.

Here she is...

3.2?  Skip it.  Get a Passat 2.0T 6 speed until the B8 A4 comes out.

No. No way.
You need at least one manual car in the fleet. Get an '07 Honda Accord EX V6 6MT instead.
I'm serious.

But isn't the Passat basically the same size...or smaller than the B7 A4?  I do like the idea of more room.  And the 3.2 impressed me.  Much more performance than I expected.  Not far off from my A4.  Ahhhh!  This is a tough decision.

I'm deathly allergic to Hondas.  I've driven a few and really can't get my brain wrapped around their corporate identity and concept of what a driver's car should be.

CPO MT 528i?

I really am sold on the quattro.  And I know many here consider it a mortal sin to buy an AWD BMW. Is AWD even available on the 5er?

Yeah, it is. Call_911's dad has one, though it's a 535xi.
Subaru Legacy? Or go for the new STI! It's a hatch so you can stuff some kids back there.

Get an E320 CDI. The Audi A6 is just a rebadged Volkswagen Passat with an extended wheelbase!  :wtf:

Just kidding.

How about a Q7 3.0 TDI (is that even sold in the US?)? You can fit all those kids into the rear seats and trunk. Man, Audi should create a minivan just for you!

Definitely look around for some manual non-Audis before signing up for this one. There are other manufacturers that make good cars, you know.

$6K below blue book, with only 4,700 miles -- Is that blue book for a new car, or a used one?

If it's $6K below blue book for a used 2007 model, I say do it.  That's such a good deal you can barely afford not to do it.

As for the car, you're a long-time Audi driver, and obviously comfortable with the brand.  The bigger size is better for you and your family.

You may not like the slush box, but would you effectively pay a lot more for a similar car with a manual tranny?  That's really the question.  You can always go back to the stick shift with your next car.

I say do it.

You might as well get it.  It seems like another A4 (B7) isn't going to happen, and like you said, the B8 and A5 are a ways off as well.  I'd probably buy it, automatic cars can be great fun too.  And you can always grab a cigar and head out to your tractor if you need a more "intimate" driving experience.

Ron, does this car have a steptronic transmission like mine?

I have to admit, I never use the gears.  For me, the action of shifting is so intertwined with using the clutch that I find it impossible to get into shifting without a clutch.

That's $6k under used blue book.  It KBB's at around $44,500, and the dealer is looking around $38,500.  The way I look at it, even if I buy it and soomehow can't stand it (not very likely, but it could happen  ) I could probably break even on selling it on the open market.  And I've looked at some BMW 5ers with the AWD (Thanks Rags - good suggestion!) but they're mid $40's with higher miles, or '05's and '06's for the same $.  Plus I couldn't find any manuals.  They do exist, but a 528xi manual CPO is apparently pretty rare.) Again, I'm an admitted Audi fan, so there would have to be a real compelling reason for me to leave the brand.

It's the "Tiptronic" with 3 options - manumatic shifting, automatic, or automatic sport mode.  The auto sport mode is pretty cool - it hangs onto gears when you let off the gas, and delays shift points a good 500 rpms I'm guessing.  It gives the whole car a lusty irreverent feel that makes me grin.  Not as visceral as my A4 6 spd MT, but the feeling is there.  I admit, I'm not nuts about the Tiptronic upshifts - no clutch means the engine kind of slurs it's way into the next gear.  Not satisfying.  But Tiptronic downshifts are sweet - with an automatic throttle blip to match.

No 3.0TDI's here.  3.6 and 4.2 V8 Benzin are all we have AFAIK.  But I don't really need all that room - that's what the Expedition is for.  I just like the idea that I could go out with my wife and another couple and take my car without everyone cursing me in the back seat.  Plus, the extra kid room is always good.

That's a beautiful car.  If I was in your position I would buy it - seems to suits your needs and it looks great at the same time.  And it's a great price.  In fact the main reservation I have is the price - why is it so cheap?

Ron. NO!!

I think it's borderline idiotic that you aren't considering a BMW. They have AWD, and a manual in the 5er, and you can find a MT 530xi. Hell, a 328xi has a little more room inside than the A4 (it's smaller on the outside), and you can get it in a MT.

I'm not for AWD BMW's, I prefer AWD Audi's. However, in your case, BMW may be the way to go.

(I'll never buy an AWD BMW, even if I live in Nunavut.)

Ron can correct me if I'm wrong, but he doesn't like BMWs because he needs a certain amount of subtlety in whatever car he drives.  For whatever reason, people are more likely to assume they are getting ripped off if their contractor pulls up in a Bimmer.  Nevermind that the Audi cost the same price, it flies under that radar a lot better.  Consider it an economic Q-ship, if you will.

Ron, that's a great price for an almost new A6.  It only has 4,700 miles on it; what could have happened to it in that time?

It really makes me think that I ought to look at that option next time around.

It's funny, I read this thread this morning, then headed out to do some errands.  While I was out, I saw 3 A6s.  It's a great looking car, for sure.  I'm sure it's still a lot of fun to drive.

I say buy it!

Basically, because AWD is the way an Audi is supposed to be, IMO. When I think of an Audi, I think of a car that is a beast in the snow, with one of the best AWD systems every made. When I think of a BMW, I think of a backroad stormer (sadly, that has been diluted), which couldn't hang with an Audi in the snow. IMO, the only way a BMW should come is in RWD. I know xDrive is damn good, and I know that they perform well, nonetheless (There's an xDrive BMW in our garage). I just would never have my BMW that way.

I decided against the AWD when I got my current BMW.  But it was more for reasons of cost; I didn't think the amount of snow we get around here justified spending $4K extra for the AWD option.

Well, I tried to get my dad to just get a 535i. He claimed that AWD really helps in the snow, and I made the same argument you did. He also said that it would be safer for my Mom, who hardly drives it. I also said it would be lighter, and save gas, but he thought I was bullshitting.

About 4.5K miles later, he wishes he went RWD, because of the fuel. And the fact that we do not get enough snow to justify the expense. It's exactly the 5er I wouldn't get. Automatic, white, and AWD. Mine would be Space Gray, Manual, RWD, and have ZSP.

White?  You've got to be kidding me.  I hardly ever see a nice car in white.  IMO, white is a chick color on a car, and it could make even a Bentley look cheap.

How much worse is the fuel mileage?  That was a concern for me too.  I just didn't think the extra expense was worth it, and you're making me think I was right.

Yeah, it's white. Because my sister wanted white, and my dad let her pick the color. He wanted Space Gray or Monaco Blue. But noooo. He had to be "diplomatic" about his own car. Stoopit sister. Whatever, I think it's better than Silver. Now that is one color that makes it very non-descript.

My car is silver.  I'm not crazy about the color actually.  I think a darker car carries more authority.  I had 2 dark cars in a row and wanted to do something different, so I went with silver.  If I had it to do over again, I'd go with some shade of grey that's a little darker.

Alpine White FTL. No kidding. My dad was about to sign for a Space Gray 535xi that the dealer had in stock, when my sister told him that she wanted white. And, much to my chagrin, there was a white one on the way from Deutschland, that was gonna reach the dealer in about 5 days. It now resides in our garage.

Yeah, I don't particularly care for silver either.  You can't be too fussy when you are buying used in the below $10K category though.

It most certainly does. I can't think of a single BMW powerplant that doesn't. My dad's car sounds awesome at high RPM's. It has such a turbine-like sound, it's so smooth. Its engine is perfection.

Yeah, but with the expedition you need to stop at every gas station just to fill up the tank again. Get an R320 CDI.

Actually, Adam was the one with the comment about people think they're getting ripped off if a contractor pulls up in a BMW.

I think it's a valid point.  I've noticed that people really do react differently to you when you drive a BMW.  In some ways it's a compliment, and other ways it's foolish.  It's something people definitely notice, a lot more than I generally do.

IMO automatic trannys get BORING AS HELL when you're forced to drive them day in and day out.

After another bad day is through, all is right in the world when I get in the car and my left foot and right arm provide the missing link between Mr. Engine and Mrs. Wheels so they can co-exist in harmony.  It's a very satisfying type of control.  Or maybe I'm just wierd and autos aren't so bad...

Guys, keep in mind that this car is not a toy for Ron.  It's his daily driver, and he spends a lot of time going in and out of city traffic.

I'd find a manual tranny to be a major PITA in that type of situation, much as I like them in other situations.  So far, Ron has chosen to use a manual tranny for his daily driver, but I don't think a slushbox is so objectionable in this situation.

But isn't the Passat basically the same size...or smaller than the B7 A4?  I do like the idea of more room.  And the 3.2 impressed me.  Much more performance than I expected.  Not far off from my A4.  Ahhhh!  This is a tough decision.

The B6 Passat is rather large.

Front Headroom (in.)     38.40
Rear Headroom (in.)    37.80
Front Legroom (in.)    41.40
Rear Legroom (in.)    37.70
Front Shoulder Room (in.)    55.70
Rear Shoulder Room (in.)    54.60

A6:
Front Headroom (in.)     38.70
Rear Headroom (in.)    37.80
Front Legroom (in.)    41.30
Rear Legroom (in.)    36.90
Front Shoulder Room (in.)    57.10
Rear Shoulder Room (in.)    55.90

They're basically the same size, the Passat's even larger in some areas.  And FWD is fine in the winter.  I'm sure you can cope with it for a short time until the B8 A4 comes out.

I wouldn't consider this car boring to drive, personally.  I have driven this field thoroughly (my dad bought a M35, and I have worked at both Infiniti and BMW)and consider my self an enthusiast.  I preferred the A6's non-sport suspension (it is now standard IIRC) greatly to that of the non-sport M35 (now M35 S), and I placed the A6 only behind the 5 series in outright in enjoyment.  Combined with the best interior in the segment (easily) and one of the better overall designs, I say go for it!

White?  You've got to be kidding me.  I hardly ever see a nice car in white.  IMO, white is a chick color on a car, and it could make even a Bentley look cheap.

I hardly consider Alpine White a "chick color", nor do I think my E34 is any less masculine because of it.  Contrary to your opinion, I think just about all of the Metallic darker colors (like gray) that BMW offers utterly destroy the lines of most of their new designs.

I thought the A4 felt "cheap" by comparison (we also drove them back to back), and I felt the base A4 suspension had much greater roll than the A6s.  Did you get to drive either car?

I don't know if he needs front plates at all, actually.  He might.  I know in PA, I don't need front plates.

But, often times, you can take a car home without a license plate (number plate) if you get a temporary registration tag.  Then, the license plate comes later.

However, considering the amount of Audis in the parking lot and the typical Audi dealer fascia in the background, I'd say that's still at the dealership.

Lots of automakers have that there as a placeholder for the cars that have Nav. Every C6 A6 has MMI, and that could be a placeholder for cars with Nav. Doesn't necessarily mean that it has navigation.

My 2 sons approve of the new addition to the family.  I got them down to $38k, so I really can't complain.  I know this is a good deal, and with a transferrable 100k mile Audi warranty, I can't miss.  More details to follow, but now I gotta run out the door again to a Boston Poops Christmas concert with my girls.  I could use a quiet night at home right about now! Thank God we'll be snowed in tomorrow!

Congratulations!  It looks great.

Question - why do you still have 'certified' where the number plate should be, and why is there a '2007' sticker on the window?  Or was that taken at the car dealer?

Thanks!  It's still at the dealer as we speak.  I signed the papers and I'm scheduled to pick it up on Monday evening.  In New Hampshire (not Old Hampshire near where you live, Nick.) we have front and rear plates, so I can't have the clean look in front.

That's you Ron.  Get this car, and you'll become an old man.  After the A6, you'll get a DTS.

Wrong! I'm leaning more towards a Lincoln Towncar actually.

I'm no old man, dammit!  I barely have the maturity of my 8 year old.  I just needed a little more room and came upon a deal I couldn't pass up.  If my wipers didn't seize up in Thursday's storm, I probably would never have bought this car.  I ended up killing a couple hours at the dealer waiting for the repair, and temptation reared its ugly head.  The B8 still looks very tempting at this point.  I can see after a year or two my Dad will take it and I'll grab the B8.  My options are open right now.  Maybe I'll get bought out by Bill Gates and I'll pick up an R8 with a MT in addition to the A6.  It could happen, you know! :mask:

More important question:

I remember you did high-mileage leases because you could write those off as business expenses. It appears to me that this is a purchase. Are you still going to be able to write off the car payments to your business?

This is a purchase, so I can only write off interest on the loan plus depreciation.  Not as beneficial as the lease from a write off perspective, but it's not a huge difference.  The lease worked well with the A4, but frankly, I wasn't thrilled with letting go of the car after only 2 years.  You see, I can grow quite fond of a fine ride like that, and I would be happy to keep it another year or so.  Typically after 3 years of ownership my eyes start to wander.  I drive too much for a 3 yr lease, so that option looked less appealing to me from that perspective.

Ron.

He already looked, doesn't sound like a BMW would be an economically feasible option for him.

Thanks!  It really came up as a surprise, but so far I don't have any buyer's remorse, except for the lonely left foot issue.  I've been checking the dealer's website on and off for about a year, and recently have been checking just about every day (it's my homepage on my laptop at the moment) since my lease was coming up.  I haven't seen a car priced anywhere near this yet.  Especially with the ridiculously low mileage.  It's sort of like buying a new $51,000 car for a cool $13,000 less.  Some sale - 25% off!

He hasn't been on for a while. I'm REALLY hoping he didn't make the mistake of buying that thing.

How is it a mistake? It is a beautiful car that meets his needs. If I was looking for a car that would spend 90% of its life in city traffic the A6 would be at the top of my list, along with the E-class (out of his range I imagine). Just because it isn't a manual BMW doesn't mean that buying it would be a mistake. There is a lot more to cars than just the transmission and the badge.

True. Now that I see it, it isn't bad. It looks good, has a beautiful interior, and, if it handles anything like the A4, handles well. Ron, I take back my words, and apologize. Congrats on the car, and good luck with it.

I did look.  There are no 5ers with manual and AWD available anywhere around here. Call_911, I really did look!  Really!  I know you're horrified by this, but it really is a kickass car.  In straightline driving, it's very A4 like when accelerating, and although there's more heft and more inertia when taking turns or transitioning, it's still a tight ride.  Not a boring car at all!  At least in my unhumble opinion.  Even if a 2006 or 2007 528xi 6MT for around the same dough, I am still hung up on the image issue. In my business, you need to look successful, but not too successful. Rightly or wrongly, BMWs and Benzes have a huge stigma associated with them.  A buddy of mine who's a doctor catches flack for his lowly Benz collection of a 4 y.o. ML320 and an '05 C class.  Any redneck in a $35,000 F150 will gladly call you a rich stuck up prick if he sees you in a $20,000 Benz or Bimmer.  Sad but true.

No need to apologize!  I would probably be in your camp if someone else was selling out the hallowed manual tranny club.  Seriously!  But your worries about it being boring are really unfounded.  It's no S4, but it boogies real nice and handles the twisties and exit ramps with authority.  I have a few exit ramps that I calibrated my breakaway speed on the A4 and my old A6, so I'll be testing this one too to see how it compares.

Thanks.  I'm not even absorbing the new level of luxury yet.  My A4 was nice, but this new beast has loads of goodies.  No nav (which I didn't want anyway), but it's got a high enough level of decadence for me.  A far cry from my 1994 Cherokee I bought new with manual locks and windows and a tractor suspension.

That might work out pretty well too, actually. Do the IRS guidelines still specify a 5-year depreciation period on vehicles (with I believe a $2,000 residual value)? I may be way off, as that's just a common textbook example, but it can still turn out to be at least as beneficial as leasing, depending on how the numbers work out.

I don't remember the details, but they do limit the dollars/year.  No longer can you take any vehicle and do a linear 5 or 7 year depreciation.  It's a lot less "generous" by our masters at the IRS.  Basically, anything that might seem at some point to be a good deal in the tax code will soon be expunged and replaced with something hideous.  It's the American way.

I'm sure it will serve you well! I admit, it makes me sad how the A6 2.7T 6-speed was so practical and perfect for someone like you and they didn't make a similar themed A6 for this generation.

Wait a second, when did you get an X5? Details! (possibly a thread link where I missed out would suffice as well)

Lovely car there, Mr. Ron. No-one crafts an interior quite as well as Audi.

Ron, what size engine will you have in your new car?  I imagine it's bigger than the 2.8 litre engine in the 528xi.

You're right about the image thing.  Your profession also matters.  For whatever reason, it's more 'acceptable' for a doctor to be driving a benz or bimmer than it is for a contractor.  It's totally irrational, but that's the downside of the appeal that those cars have.

It's the 3.1 L V6 that produces 255 HP.  That's 5 HP more than my '00 2.7T A6 does.  My old A6 with the manual was incredible - 0-60 in 5.9 sec.  The new A6 goes in 7.1 sec, and when you drive it aggressively, it responds well, but the feeling is definitely more demure.  The extra HP has to carry around a few hundred extra pounds too.

I'd like Audis regardless, since I've been a fan long before I could afford them, so I'd be leaning that way anyway.  But it is a shame that I have to factor in customer attitudes like that.  And I know I'm not exaggerating either. I had a meeting with a fairly well-off client who was a pretty funny guy. I had just attended a State Senate hearing at Beacon Hill about some bills that affect my industry before I came to his house, so I still was dressed nicer than usual with a tie, etc.  He met me at the door and quipped "Oh No!  My contractor is wearing a tie!  My God you're going to be too expensive, aren't you?!!!"  I got the contract signed anyway but I had a conversation with him about image from a customer's perspective and he certainly confirmed that this issue is very real.

Thanks!  And you're right about the lack of a similar car to my old A6.  Blame it on a combination of too many lame-ass American drivers demanding so few manuals (especially in this segment) and government regs that force carmakers to spend a bajillion dollars to test and certify every drivetrain combination, and that pretty much shoots down the A6 manual tranny.  :banghead:  The whole attitude of that car was a badass wolf in sheeps clothing.  I really miss that.

He's gonna have a 3.2L V6 (3.1, really, it has 3123 cc).

The 528i/xi does NOT have 2.8L. It has the same engine as your car does, Dazzle. It's slightly detuned, I believe they changed the intake manifold. Yours makes 255 hp, the 528i/xi makes 230 hp.

No - the standard 6 speed Tiptronic.  I'm not sure they even put the CVT in the A6.  Pretty sure it's not available there.

They have the CVT in FWD A6's. I mean, I haven't seen any, and I don't know why you would buy one in this class, but they do exist.

Interesting.  I thought that the numbers in the BMW models signified engine size, and hence, a 528 had a 2.8 liter engine, while a 545 had a 4.5 liter engine.

BMW only has a 3.0L I6. The 535i is just a 3.0LTT I6.
The 545i was a 4.4L V8.

In the US, they only have 3.0L I-6's. Elsewhere, like the 323i in Canada, they have a 2.5L I-6, the N52B25.

In the US, the 6-cylinder BMW engines in use, currently are:
1. N54B30 (3.0L TT)
2. N52B30 (3.0L I-6, in the the _28i/xi. Also in the X3, X5 and Z4.)

:mask:

Hehehe, that's a classic move for my dad as well.  More than once he's taken my mom's car to the dealer for tires or something else minor, and comes home with a brand new car for her.

Hah, that's taking impulse buying to a new level.... :ohyeah:

Women impulse buy shoes and dresses; men impulse buy cars, electronics and tools.  That's the difference between the sexes in a nutshell...

I'm famous for impulse buying electronics.  I bought my two big screen LCD TVs while I was waiting for a prescription to be filled at a drug store next door to the electronics store.  The joke my friends said about me was, "What can I do for 5 minutes?"

I guess it wasn't quite an impulse purchase since I'd been shopping for a car online for a couple months, but when I saw this A6, it was too good to pass up.  And when the dealer offered to pay out the last 2 lease payments in addition to coming down on the price, well you know - he who hesitates....

Hmm...that's more than I thought it would be.

The turbos make the engine a gem, however. I wouldn't be able to pass up the temptation of incredible power at every point in the rev range.

Wow, great choice saxonyron! The A6's are the best looking sedans from Audi IMHO (excl. "S" cars of course).

I think you'll be fine with the automatic for a couple of years. Once you get ready for a new car the B8 A4 will be available with new engines and a manual transmission. From what I've read, the interior size of the A4 should just about equal your new A6.

In any event I can't wait to hear more about the car once you've driven it for a bit. Hope everything works out for you when you go to pick it up.  :ohyeah:

All went well today, and the new ride is sitting in the driveway.   The dealer was great and kept to their word on all counts.  The holiday season is definitely a slow time of year for car salespeople, because I'm still amazed at the overall deal.  I mean, the car was already a loss leader at the asking price of 10% off Blue Book, but then they let me beat them down another $2k, plus pay $1,200 to me for my last 2 lease payments and do a $400 repaint of the A4's rear bumper that my work neighbor scratched up with his truck.  I even bought the Audi service plan where all routine service is paid for up to 75,000 miles (Basically almost $4,000 of service paid in advance for $1,280.) Overall a killer deal that I really didn't expect (which is why I was expecting some sort of a zinger tonight, but no surprises!  So I got a $51,000 car with 4,700 miles on it for $38,000, and it's got an Audi warranty to 100,000 miles.  Hmmmmm....there might be something to this CPO deal!

I can get used to this car real fast.  Performance, ride and handling really are incredible.  And the room is extravagant.  My 2 sons were beside themselves as we brought it home and cut up a few twisties.  Nice touches abound on the interior, like the cool blue-ish mood lighting along the upper door panels and footwells that you can adjust in intensity with the slick MMI control.  The Sport setting for the tranny is fairly addicting - it drops down 1-2 gears when you kick it in, and holds the gears right up to redline.  I took a couple pics in the driveway tonight. More to follow when it's not a) dark b) 14 degrees, and c) 9:00 and I hadn't eaten dinner yet.

Boy, I really did - I'm not complaining!  I saw this car as their loss leader in their website and told my wife  something to the effect of "Check this deal out!  Ridiculous!  Too bad they'll never run one like this when my lease is up in Feb."  Then they go and knock basically another three grand off, including paying the last 2 months and all the lease turn-in costs.  My lesson learned is to buy your car during the worst time of the dealer's year.  It really will save you thousands.  I'll bet it's around 10 to 15% less on average if you do your deal right.
