Title: Women Claims Her Kia Pulls to the Left.

QuoteSmall cars + Heavy people = Mechanical issues?

We all know that society as a whole is getting heavier, bigger, fatter. I know several larger people who will freely admit that they are not comfortable in a small car because they're bigger, and that's fine.

Now, out of Edmonton, Alberta Canada comes the story of a woman who says the local Kia dealership allegedly told her the reason her Kia Rio wasn't holding an alignment was because of her weight. The woman said the dealership's solution, after two alignments failed to correct the problem, was to have her sit in the car while the vehicle was getting an alignment, which she found embarrassing and humiliating.

Kia denies the allegation that the dealership suggested she be in the car during the alignment, but did admit there were problems with the situation. The dealership, Kia West Edmonton acknowledged, "The person handling the situation made some serious mistakes, and didn't handle it in the proper fashion."

Kia did conclude that the alignment was not caused by the woman's weight, and there was indeed an issue with the car itself. Kia has said it will work with the woman to fix the issue.

The woman hopes her story will "make manufacturers more aware of our growing society."

Below is a link to the video from Global Edmonton.

No doubt, a larger vehicle isn't going to be effected by the weight of an individual as much as a Kia Rio or other subcompact. However, should manufacturers make vehicles, especially smaller cars, more mechanically stout to accommodate our ever-enlarging society?

Let's hear your opinion in the comments section ...

As an Albertan I don't know whether to be embarrassed for this fatteh, or proud of the guys who told her her car was going out of alignment because she is a fatteh.

That's nothing new.  My 1969 E-type service manual recommends having 160 pounds in the driver's seat during while the front end is being aligned.

I don't think 160 lb would even help in this case.

Exactly. The best way to align a car is with the driver inside.

Probably not. Of course, it'll be Kia's fault when the car throws the crank on the ground after dragging her fat ass around.

So...what does this lady expect car companies to do?  It's physics.  Let's just make it an option to get a counterweight in the right side of the car to offset your body!  You can even get it customized to your actual body weight!!!!

She can probably do this as a counter weight, they probably weigh the same too

Here's an aftermarket oppotunity.

Ballast tanks.  One on each side of the car.  Filled with water with a couple pumps to move the load back and forth.

Oh come on! Look at that picture: she's not even a deuce. If my 200 pound frame isn't pulling my Aveo out of alignment, then her paltry 170 lbs isn't putting a fucking dent in a Kia.

Is she only 170?  she's definitely bigger than I am.  Looks more like 200s.  And another thing they haven't considered, maybe the tires are heat cycled out due to the extra load on the driver's side.  That would cause it too.

I think the point is that she's overweight for her size but not all that heavy in the grand scheme of things.

What sort of Kia is that, a Spectra?

She can barely see over the rooftop. She must be 5'4"! She has a belly and a big ass, but nothing too extraordinary.

I'd put money on the fact that she weighs under 200.

Precisely. Let's ask hounddog whether or not he misaligns his car simply by sitting in it.

I've had a 300 pound dude in the Aveo, sitting directly behind me. The alignment is fine.

I'd say 250 MINIMUM, closer to 300.

Which Oprah are we talking about?

Her:

That girl ain't 200 pounds.

Or her:

There's no way I can prove it, since I seriously doubt anyone besides her doctor knows her weight, but I'll tell you this. I personally know a young lady that's 5'2" and has weight problems. At 220 pounds, she was positively waif like in comparison to KIA woman. I would charitably estimate KIA woman at 280 and guarantee I'm much closer than you to the truth.

Not to mention fat weighs less than muscle.

Look at it this way--what's a thin weight for a girl around 5 foot tall? 100-110 pounds? Add a hundred pounds to that, and this is what you get. If I weighed 300 pounds I would look like a ball too.

Okay, according to the first Google hit, the ideal body weight for a 5'1'' woman is between 100 and 132 pounds. This woman is fat, but she's not twice what she should be.

Perhaps 50 pounds would be a lot of extra fat for a short person to be carrying around, but it still doesn't put her near 200.

Have you people never actually seen a truly fat person?

I had a girlfriend that was 5'2" and weighed 110-115 most of the time. She had to buy her clothes in the childrens department. When she bought Levi's jeans they were a size ZERO. Kia girl would make 3 of her. For crying out loud people. Watch the video. She barely fits behind the steering wheel. The car pulls to the left. How many clues do you need?

Watch a lawsuit come out of this.  I'm thinking emotional distress with a heaping tablespoon of "irreparable mental damage" thrown in for flavor.

Seriously...the only one to blame for her embarrassment is herself.  With cars (small, especially) I would guess that the drivers weight takes a greater tole on the way the car performs, thus the reason why she had to sit in it.  It's not their fault she is a Twinkie queen.

The best quote from the article

"The woman hopes her story will "make manufacturers more aware of our growing society."

TranslationThe woman hopes her story of the worlds growing laziness and disregard for personal care will force more law makers and corporations looking for votes and sales to give into gluttonous eating habits and pathetic (read: none) physical care we are growing to regard as normal.

You're ignoring the most obvious factor. Fat people have bones and muscle too. In fact, imagine carrying an extra 100 lbs. around all day, every day. Do you think you won't gain muscle mass? Once again, that girl is at least 260 lbs if she's an ounce. Argue all you want. You're still wrong.

I don't know how to respond other than to say this:

I am appalled about all of this politically correct bullshit.

My family has owned several late-1980s to mid-1990s Asian compact cars.  They were not designed for big people.  My dad is maybe 5'6" and I am 5'7" and we're both a touch under 200 pounds, and we both fit fine in them.  On the other hand, I have a friend who is about 6'0" back home and 320ish or so.  He's, for lack of a better word, obese.  He can not comfortably sit in my car in any seat.

In a modern Japanese or Korean car, we're supposed to accommodate fatasses in subcompact cars.  How is that supposed to work?  Are we supposed to defy the laws of mass and just say, "Hey, here's a small car, but I'm sure it'll work for you!"  One size does not fit all, and it's ridiculous to think it should.

Trucks have big seats for big, brawny workers.  That's their target market.  Yet, now we're seeing urban cowboys and lesbians eat them up like chocolate.  That's fine because they're physically smaller than the seats that were designed for the car.

Over in Japan, the Evo and STI have narrower, more supportive seats, yet here they're wider for our fat asses.  They don't even offer the better seats as options here!

What I guess I am trying to say is that if she wanted a car to support her girth, whether this was truly her fault or not, she should do one of two things:  shop for a car that better suited her needs or lose some weight.

Instead it is shit like this why eventually all seats, even in sports cars (and currently in Corvettes to some degree) will be flat, wide, and unsupportive like these.  The bitch should just buy heavier duty springs and shut the fuck up.

The bitch should just buy heavier duty springs and shut the fuck up.

Dude grow up.   It's her right to be fat.  Consequently, it is her right to bitch about it, and the duty of everyone around her to conform.  However, no one has the right to call her out on her weight, because she is part of our "growing society."  In fact, the mechanic was wrong to put her in the car to calibrate it to her weight because she may realize she is a lard ass and needs to loose weight.  Instead, he should have guessed her weight (making sure to cut whatever he thinks she really is in half, because we don't want to state the obvious) then find weights equal to that amount and put them in the car to calibrate it.  And, if she refuses to sit in the car, and he cannot accurately guess her weight (because she will not tell you) and you refuse her service, she should sue because it's discrimination.  Jesus...has chairman Obama not taught you anything about modern liberalism?

...capitolist pig.

First of all, this is not the first time I've heard of this happening, and yes her weight was the cause of the issue.

That said, the dealer should have come up with a solution that didn't involve pointing out that she's basically a heifer.

No, they shouldn't have.  No one should have to work around something just because you may be offended by it, especially if it's their own doing.

They should have just sneaked about 100 pounds of steel under the passenger seat, covered it with carpet and called it a day.

Actually easier yet they could have just found the biggest guy in service and had him sit in the driver seat while they aligned the car. There was no need to suggest it to her and cause a scene.

My solution; find another tech (not necessarily a huge one) and stick him in there with a bag of floor-dry on hit lap to simulate the weight as much as possible.

Like I said, LOL but bad move on the dealer's part.

(She's been up there, she recently got gastric bypass and has knocked off 30lbs. But she also lost a good 20lbs before Christmas dieting AND they found and removed an 8lb cyst in January..)

Someone should have explained more tactfully to the poor woman before she embarrassed herself on the news  that it would be recommended for ANYONE to be in their car during alignment..

Our society is what it is.  I know what it's like to be grossly overweight.

That being said, I still feel we're being taught to accept obesity too much rather than embrace healthy lifestyles.  It can be discouraging when you think everyone is making fun of you, but it can also be a real kick in the ass when you finally come to terms how overweight you really are.

She can either get stronger from this or blame society for her plight.  Either way, America's weight problem as a whole needs to start being talked about rather than just brushed under the rug.  This opened up a necessary conversation.

PS Women will never mention their true weight.  Ever.

In all seriousness, instead of embarrassing the woman by making her sit in the car during the alignment, why not just put some ballast in the driver's seat approximately equal to her estimated weight?  A lard-arsed service tech would do just fine.  Judging by the dealerships I've worked at, it shouldn't be too difficult to find one of those!

We all know EVERY woman on the face of the Earth (no matter how skinny she may be) thinks she's overweight.  I've known women who could wear my wristwatch as a belt who still say they're fat.  Naturally, Kia-woman is going to be sensitive about her weight, too.  True, a small car with a relatively soft suspension (like the Rio) can be affected by such an imbalance in weight.  I just think the dealership could have handled the situation better.

Actually, the fatter they are, the less they say they're fat.  Skinny women usually say they're fat, even the mildly fat may say so.. but the morbidly obese ones says they're sexy and curvy...  Yes, circle is definitely a curve.  Even their fat rolls are some sort of curves.

Complaining about being fat when you're skinny is a good way to draw attention to your skinniness and get compliments or "oh no, you're skinny!". If you're fat and complaining about being fat, people are just gonna think "yeah, no shit". ;)

Also, I know lots of women who defy the stereotype, many more, in fact, than who fit the stereotype.

It changes. But not enough to make a huge or noticeable difference when driving. Unless it was some 250 pound person like her. But then it wouldn't matter because the little 1.6 motor wouldn't be able to move the car anymore so steering wouldn't be a problem.
