I had a pretty awesome day today in terms of car sightings. Shot over 1,000 pictures of various cars (in 4.5 pictures per second mode) and I've selected the best for your enjoyment here.

Why?  No, really, WHY?  I can't believe somebody in Germany, home of some of the world's best cars, actually paid good money for a freakin' Buick Park Avenue?!?  I imagine this must be the original owner behind the wheel.  After all, who else would buy this thing from him?  I'm sure part exchanging it is out of the question, too, since residual value in Europe for a rig like this is non-existent.  I hope he really likes it because it looks like he's going to be stuck with the damn thing for the rest of his life!

Cheers,

What's wrong with the Park Avenue? It's a good car.

I can understand someone in America buying a Park Avenue.  But someone in Germany?  Although GM did try selling the Park Avenue in Europe in the early 1990s (and this car is a Euro-spec version) you can probably count the number they sold over there on your fingers and toes.  If I were planning to sell cars in Europe, the LAST thing I would try bringing over is a Buick Park Avenue.

So here was a car doomed to be a colossal failure on the continent of six-buck-a-gallon gas, sold through a spotty dealer network (a small handful of selected Opel dealers) who don't have a lot of experience servicing a Buick.  I can just imagine the service writer hiding under his desk every time this cars pulls in, much the same way as the service people at my local Lincoln-Mercury dealer used to sneak out the back door whenever I pulled up in my Merkur XR4Ti.  Add to that the VERY limited parts availability and the aforementioned nonexistent resale value and you can begin to understand how being a Buick owner in Europe might be a very challenging ordeal.

Having first-hand experience with a number or orphaned imports, let me tell you that it takes a lot of dedication to run one as a daily driver.  I once had my Fiat in the shop for TWO MONTHS, waiting for parts to came all the way from Italy.  In the end, I had to locate the parts myself because the mechanic had given up.  And this was the only guy I could find who was even willing to touch a Fiat!  I wonder how many Park Avenue owners in Europe have similar stories to tell?
