It's a 1980 Volvo 242 GT (The badges are in the trunk). I bought it for $250 and I have to get it home somehow. It does run, but off of the bottle. It probably needs fuel pumps. It will be converted from K-jet to Megasquirt. I AM PUMPED! It's REALLY rust free, aside from the minimal surface rust.
Shouldn't you get the Volvo you already have running before you get a project car?
The one I have is running, thank you. And it runs quite well. Nothing wrong with it at the moment...which is why it's for sale.

I wasn't aware of this, regardless, that information just makes me  more.
Some people buy cars for driving.
I love how you replaced a moderately reliable Volvo with an older one.
I must say I wouldn't do the same, but whatever floats your boat, dude.

What, don't you trust Volvo's reliability?
...You don't? Why did you just buy another one, then? An older one, at that?
Oh well. This one is a classic brick, enjoy.
It's not replacing the 940. It was $250...I couldn't pass it up. I'm replacing the 940 with a V70 T5.
Remind us again why you are selling the 940 at all.
My parents decided to.
Cool find, but have you looked at the problem areas specific to this particular car, and how much it's going to cost to fix those items and get this thing back in roadworthy condition?
Trust me, I've gone through a few project car phases myself, where I've wanted to pick up a barnyard find like this, but they don't call them money pits for no reason
I know what I'm getting myself into.
Forget the negativity. Good on ya! Looks like you'll have a blast!
Nice!
What kind of transmission?
It's an M46. It's a 4-speed manual + overdrive.
I'm sorry.
At least it's a bargain.
You could sell it for scrap and make a profit.
Have fun with that! :ohyeah:

Amen! That looks like a fun project car, and nice finding one w/ little rust. Keep us updated on the progress of it.
I can't believe you actually bought it!
Keep us posted with the project work. You should start a Project: Volvo 242 GT thread in the Garage when you get some work done on it.
That is, however, the second filthiest car I've ever seen. (My brother's is worse, hehe)
"She's a brick... duh duh duuuh duh... house!"
Congrats with the tractor, er, car.
As far as beaters go, they don't get much better than the 240-series.
You lucky bastard! Those are hot!
There is actually a Volvo Bertone Coupe like that at a gas station outside of Munich! Same color but in much better shape. It's also for sale. They're hot. :mrcool:
Congrats!
I can't believe everyone is slagging him off. This is supposedly an enthusiasts' website. CJ good on ya for trying to restore a classic.

I would love to have something like that right now...
Yeah, very cool!
Some people buy cars to drive, others buy cars to BUILD and also drive. Good job!
I think I have found the only person on the forums who might be more of a specific brand whore than I am.
Good luck with it, CJ.

You have no idea how much I love the GT. There's one a few streets away that I've been eyeballing ever since I knew of its existence. The fact that I even FOUND one was a marvel in and of itself.

I'm curious to see if you still agree with that statement when all is said and done with the car. Not ragging on you, but it's very easy to underestimate the amount of work (and cost) a backyard find will need. Keep us posted on your progress, it's a neat car.
I was originally going to call you nuts, as that doesn't like like it'd be an ideal replacement for your 940 (I was thinking daily driver), but I see that it's going to be a project car. Have fun with it!
Going to put a 302 in there?

Volvos can be addictive. I hope your planning on keeping the original B21. Original 242GTs are rare beasts these days and originality is everything to fans of these cars. But why get rid of the 940? You've already sorted everything that could potentially go wrong with this car. Keep it and enjoy the next quarter-million miles of trouble-free driving! Although, I have to admit I like the sound of a V70, too.
See, I told you Volvos were addictive! :ohyeah:
Cheers,
Madman of the People
Oh, Madman, you've got no idea! My first word to spell was Volvo. I came home later that day and wrote it. We've got it in my box and I'll scan it eventually.
I'll keep the B21 for now and add a B230FT later on. Its M46 seems to be quite nice.
The last 4 issues of Motor have featured an injected Holden 5L V8 transplant into a Volvo 242GT.....

That's a shame.
Hey, CJ, have you though about putting a V8 in there?

I'd buy that for about $550 and drive it as-is, because that's what it's worth objectively.
When I saw the second pic, with the gasoline tank, I thought, "Is he going to set that thing on fire?"
j/k, good luck with that. I always thought they were kind of cool. There's a guy around the block from me that has (maybe had...now that I think about it, I don't think I've seen them in a while) two old 240s, that look like they are in remarkable condition.
Just curious, but where are you located? There's a guy a few streets away that has two 242s.
Raza, what did you post? It was deleted already.
CJ, in westchester county, NY. he's got 4 doors, so they're technically 244s, but I think they were just called DL's (lame name) towards the end.

From 1975-79, Volvo's model designations were pretty straightforward (242, 244, 245) but starting in 1980 the 2XX badges vanished and only the trim badges remained on the car (DL, GL, GLE, Turbo). In 1986, both sedan and wagon (the 242 two-door sedan had been dropped by then) were badged as "240" plus the trim level badge (except on the base model which had no trim level badge).
My old 1987 sedan was badged 240 DL and my current 1991 base sedan is badged simply as 240.
