Title: If you could only have one car...
Post by: Vinsanity on November 03, 2009, 03:15:44 PM
If you could only have one car for the rest of your life, what would it be?

You may pick any production road car currently in existence. The only thing is that it will be the only car you'll ever have for the rest of your life, serving daily commuter/family hauler/whatever else you use a car for/etc. duties.

Right now I'm thinking a Lexus LS460.

911 Turbo.

For the rest of my life?  Shit, that means this car has to last me for 60 years or so.  Okay, well then this would be my criteria:

1. Tough and long lasting
2. Fast
3. All weather and All terrain
4. Can carry a family and all our stuff for skiing, camping, waterskiing)
5. Comfortable
6. Fun to drive
7. Would be reasonably innexpensive to fix after the warranty runs out
8. Good availability of parts in 50 years.

Vehicle = 2010 SVT Raptor or 2011 SVT Raptor SuperCrew (to be released by fall 2010)

911 4S.

Beautiful, fast, has a stick, can be used even in bad weather and who can resist the sound of that flat-6.

Let my wife drive the kiddy-mobile.

Outback XT 6spd.  All the power I'd ever need, plenty of ground clearance for most situations, and I could even stick a small trailer behind it for loads larger than the already huge cargo space.  If I want a more serious offroader I can just rent a Jeep for the weekend or something.

Have fun replacing those Fox Shox.

Me, I'd go with an STI. 4WD for the ski trips, hatchback for practicality, and it's awesomely fun to drive.

Now if my wife could have a vehicle as well that changes things.  She can have a Volvo XC90 and I will have a 2011 Mustang GT with Track Pack and 400 hp.

I dunno what I'll need in 30 years, so I can't answer it.

If I have the same needs as now, then an old Porsche 911.

Fine. Same rules apply to your SO, and you could drive each other's cars if you needed to.

My future wife would get a Land Cruiser. I might splurge a little bit and go for a Mercedes CL.

911 Turbo and I'm not even kidding. I think that's the only car, that would completely satisfy me and give me the feeling that I would never like to buy another car again. And yeah, I plan to let my future wife drive a family car.  :partyon:

But since you've said the car should be capable of doing allmost anything... I guess an Audi A6 Station wagon with a big Diesel would be totally perfect.

If it is me + a wife (now THERE is a terrifying thought), then probably a RR for her, and something older and awesome for me.

For me, probably a 4Runner, around an '04 maybe.  Its a good combination of size and utility and with the family and horses I'm gonna need something with utility.  Otherwise I'd go for a sporty wagon.

If my girl could have a regular car, without a doubt it would be a 993 or 996 Turbo

Blazing performance, relatively high practicality + reliability, timeless looks...

These cars will probably look just as good in 70 years as they do today. That's my choice and I'm sticking with it

Well, if only 1 car, I'm not going to try and afford to keep a 996 running for 30k miles a year for 50 more years and stuff family/friends into it.  Or am I going to try and use a Miata as an only car after I get a house.

I agree. You can only have so much fun with a sports car. As much as I want a DB9, I also want to enjoy my life and not feel trapped because of my car. It sucks not being able to go wherever I want to go--I never realized how free my 4runner let me be until after it was gone.

Ooh, nice choice Tave.

I'd still get an STI over one, but I'd definitely get a Tacoma or 4Runner over a sports car.

I would have gone with 911 Turbo, but that has been overused thus far. The RS6 Avant doesn't have a manual, but do I want to be locked in with a manual for the rest of my life? What if I get tendinitis? The Cayenne Turbo S could be pretty awesome as I could off-road as well as go ridiculously fast. I'm going with that one.

How often do you go offroad?  Ever?  Because I haven't.  I'd rather have something that drives infinitely better on the road.  You know, the thing I drive on EVERYDAY.

I don't tackle dirt paths and boulders on my way to work everyday.

So you know that in the 50-60 years you'll have the car that you'll never go offroad?

I'll never have to.  That's why we have roads.  Even if I did want to a handful of times in my life, it's not worth it.  I'd have to live with the significantly worse driving dynamics of an SUV the entire time, all to just go off road a few times?

I'm much more likely to track the car than ever take it off road.  Give me a car over an SUV or truck any day.

That all-weather safety of AWD thing helps in these parts, don't you think? Sure snow tires are great, but do they even make those wide enough to fit a 911 Turbo?

Sure they do. $1280 for a set of 4 (it's a staggered setup on 19's to clear the ceramic brakes :praise:).  235/35/19 up front and 295/30/19 out back.  That would be a bad ass snow machine.

This is coming from a guy who does go off road: Most of the time, you can get by with a passenger car on non-paved roads. The only situation you are likely to be in where you need to get up a road too tough for a passenger car is for work, in which case, you have a work truck. High-clearance off-road capable vehicles are nice if you use them a lot, because they're better at it.

My parents wrote a hiking book with 100 hikes in the Oregon and Washington Cascades. Many hikes were remote, etc. They hiked every single one, and accessed every single trailhead with a 1996 Buick LeSabre. They got turned back once because of the road.

As much as I like having a truck, this is spot on.  You'd be surprised how far you can make it off road with a car.  And if you can't get all the way to the destination, then there's a little hike, which isn't a bad thing.  Sometimes you walk (or ride your bike) a bit farther, but I have never not gotten to where I wanted to go because I own a car.

And I gave thought to something like a WRX or Land Cruiser before I decided on the P-car (forgot about that damn Tacoma though ).

Yeah, but who wants to drive that everywhere? And they're too big for northwest forest roads, anyway.

People used to drive giant RWD sedans and Porsche 356s in snow, without snow tires, and survived. AWD is nice, but it's not a safety item.

Cayenne GTS with 6 spd.

Ehh, I thought about it, but I heard the manual wasn't very good and I think the Turbo is better off-road.

I'm really mad yall beat me to the 911 Turbo. It's completely PERFECT. You can get a roof rack to put all your crap in, go insanely fast, drive around in the snow, and if need be you could jam someone in the back seat.

Meh--I've taken the Aveo places it had no reason to be (and I have the dentz to prove it), but I think I would be much more hesitant to do that if I knew there was 0 possibility that I'd be getting a new car if something happened to it.

Not to mention, the benefits of a larger vehicle reach far beyond offroading. What if you want to take a long trip? What if you want to just throw your crap in your car and move across the country? What if you want to buy a new chair? A big TV? What to take your friends somewhere? The original prompt mentioned that this would have to be a family hauler. What about them?

Says the guy who bought an Explorer?

I have definitely had to find a ride with someone else because my car could not get to the camping area I wanted to go. I still got there, but it sucks not being able to do that stuff on your own and having to depend on other people.

The idea of seeking outside assistance every time I need to buy, move, or dispose of even a relatively small item is just not worth it. A few weekends ago I spent the better part of two hours breaking down all the cardboard boxes that I used to ship my crap to NC. I wanted to take them to the recycling drop-off but they simply wouldn't fit in my car. It would have been a 5-minute ordeal with a truck.

What if you need to haul stuff, or need to go offroad?

1. Rent a van or drive the wife's car

2. When does anyone ever *need* to go offroad? They made roads for a reason....

My only gripe with the 911 is that there's no back seat. If I couldn't get something practical for the wife I would go with an E39 Dinan S2.

The phrase "day-to-day" doesn't mean, to me, that you necessarily do each and every one those things every single day, just that it wouldn't be unusual to find yourself doing it on an ordinary day: that it isn't some exceptional, all-important event.

IDK man.

I have family, friends & U-Haul. Plus I don't really do that much hauling (or driving for that matter). So maybe my own day to day routine colors my choice.

But I wouldn't want to drive an SUV just because maybe 8-10 days out of the year I might have to haul something.

I must admit though, I never understood why people complained about stiff springs until I hurt my back a few weeks ago. It was just a light sprain. But I was in pain over every jolt. To have to deal with that kind of ride 90% of the time for performance I'll get to access 10% of the time makes no sense. But if my back holds up I will be OK with a relatively stiffly sprung but well damped car.

Who said anything about that?

A couple points:

1) My commute consists of a 2-3 mile straight shot from my house to the entrance of my school. There are exactly two interesting curves that I can have any fun with, and usually traffic is thick enough that other, speed-related fun is out of the question.

2) What is it that I enjoy, most often, on drives? Sure, I love to wring my car out from time to time, but that's not the only way I enjoy driving. I also like to listen to good music. I like fun company. I like to explore new places. I like to open my windows, even in the dead of winter or heat of summer. I like the ebb of traffic. I like the feeling of freedom and movement I get no matter what kind of car I drive.

3) Some of the most enjoyable drives of my life involved me put-putting around at about 30-40 mph on an unremarkable road in the middle of nowhere.

QuoteBut I wouldn't want to drive an SUV just because maybe 8-10 days out of the year I might have to haul something.

Meh--there's a lot of factors I mentioned besides payload. How is that 911 going to fit 4 friends so you can go to a ballgame? How is it going to take your kids to school and drop your wife off at work on the way? Now, this kind of stuff doesn't need to be fulfilled by a pick-up truck, and really I don't see anything wrong with a person who would choose a car for this hypothetical.

I just think it's kind of silly--every poll on here, no matter what the restrictions, you get people saying, "Oh, I'd buy a 911," or "I'd get a Ferrari." It's kind of a boring, automatic response, isn't it? Sure, I yearn for those rides too. I'd sell my left arm for a Porsche Turbo. I just thought those answers were a little uncreative in the context of the OP.

I don't think I can answer the question on the topic still.  I thought I can do it with one car but still hasn't happened.  I guess an STi may do for now but I don't think I would want to drive one for the rest of my life.

Why the hell would I only want to own one car for the rest of my life?

Well I agree that this is an individual choice. Personally I like good music, but I hate traffic, I hate being distracted by passengers... and often these days driving for me means I'm going to fix something on my car, which I hate to do if it's not a new fun part, or I'm running an errand which is usually not fun. I guess right now driving is just a sour point for me, and a vehicle of utility would remove the last bit of enjoyability I get from it all.

I conceded to a 911 being a bit extreme, but I def wouldn't go with a truck over something realistically practical like an M5. Plus my wife would have her own car to drop the kids off in. I hate shuttling people around.

I think it's strange that given the choice of owning any car ever made for the rest of one's life a person on a car enthusiast message board would choose practicality + utility over the quality of the driving experience. Not to say you're wrong, but to me it would make more sense for a car head to want to own something he/she would enjoy driving.

Plus from my personal experience most driving is not for pleasure but rather for some end purpose for something or someone I don't necessarily want to serve. A 911 Turbo to me represents driving for pleasure and having the freedom of not having to compromise on a car choice for practical means. Not to say your choice is wrong, but I think your POV is wrong. There are people DDing 911s everywhere... I don't think it's that unfathomable. A Ferrari or GT3? Yea I think that would be a stretch.

I gotta say, at this point I could see myself sticking with the WRX for a long time.  It meets all my needs quite well.

Assuming it actually does look a lot better in person.

I'd prefer a Quattroporte or Rapide, but I don't think I'd want to maintain one of those as a DD for 50+ years. (or any car for that matter, but I trust Porsches to be more durable than practically anything else interesting).

I like that we're arguing for the opposite of what we own.

Anyway, yeah, you're right. For someone who has a lot of use for an SUV/truck, that makes more sense. Also, roads in the Rockies are usually shittier than roads in the PNW. My point was that you don't need a giant 4WD to get to the occasional trailhead or camping spot. Beyond that, having a large vehicle is just a convenience thing. If you don't mind dealing with loading big things in small cars, or having a trailer, or borrowing a friend's truck, then a small car isn't unrealistic. Personally, I would rather own a small sports car and deal with it than a big truck (obviously, both is best).

1. Rent a van or drive the wife's car

2. When does anyone ever *need* to go offroad? They made roads for a reason....

My only gripe with the 911 is that there's no back seat. If I couldn't get something practical for the wife I would go with an E39 Dinan S2.

I need to go off-pavement quite a bit, in fact. There are a lot of rural people who have a lot of legitimate reasons to be off-pavement.

Maybe that's because the 911 is the perfect car.

Off-pavement other than a well maintained gravel road?

I live pretty rural, and that's the worse conditions I ever need to drive in.

Yes, as applies to both me and rural people. Remember that conditions are different in different parts of the country. In the Pacific Northwest, west of the Cascades, almost no one has much of a reason to go off-well-maintained-gravel, because there are very very few roads that aren't well-maintained or paved. However, in Idaho, a lot of people live or recreate on crappy dirt roads, because so many of the roads out here are crappy and dirt.

One day I might by a table, the other I might need to take my cardboard boxes to the recycling bin, the next I might want to take my dog to the park, then I want to take a weekend to go camping with my friends, and then a few days later I want to take a group of friends to a ballgame, and then a few days later I want to clear some brush from my back yard, and then the following weekend I want to buy a new lawnmower for my snazzy yard....

The phrase "day-to-day" doesn't mean, to me, that you necessarily do each and every one those things every single day, just that it wouldn't be unusual to find yourself doing it on an ordinary day: that it isn't some exceptional, all-important event.

Well, all those things would be terribly unusual for me on an ordinary day, as I've never done any of those things (except for going to a ballgame, but all my friends have cars).  I stand by my choice.

EDIT:  But I am by no means saying that it's the right choice for you.  Some choices I've seen have been a bit boring, but I won't say that you should get a 599 to drive daily without a backup.  Even with regard to normal cars, there are more fun alternatives that don't really sacrifice too much versatility.  If I could have two cars instead of just one, I'd probably throw in a Volvo V70R or previous generation Legacy 2.5GT or spec.B (wagon if they were sold with a stick, which I think they were for a short period) because it's always going to be more practical to have two cars than one.

Everything I've read about this car has been heaps of praise and it will certainly last better than a comparable Maser.  And since Ill be on the inside most of the time, the ugly won't be a problem.

Either of these would work pretty damn well too.

Audi S4. Practical enough that you could use it for mundane crap, such as commuting, carrying a few people or some stuff, all-wheel drive that will make winter driving less 'fun' that pure high power rear drive cars, and something you could potentially park downtown without having to be paranoid about somebody trying to steal it.

On the fun side, you have a 330hp car that handles like a champ with a 6-speed manual transmission. Sure, it may cost $50k, but you're driving it for the rest of your life, so might as well spend the money.

Eh, my 2000 A6 2.7T is basically the same twin turbo engine on the B5 S4.  I sold it to an employee back in 2006 who still works for me.  The car had 120k miles, now has over 150k miles.  Original turbos, no failures. In fact no problems of significance with the whole engine.  The front end does beat you up with ball joints, tie rod ends, etc. etc.  BUt that's $3-400 a couple times a year.  No big deal in the big scheme of things.  Of course if you get one that was abused by the previous owner, you can have issues.  I took real good care of the car, never stressed the turbos without proper warm up , cool down, kept the oil fresh, etc. If you can find a decent used one where you actually know the history of the car, you might be on solid footing.  Besides, the thrill of having an S4 would far outweigh the minor inconvenience of a $4,000 twin turbo swap!

I'm just telling you what Audi and Audi technicians have told my friends who owned B5 S4s, after their turbos failed @ 60-70K. Also, if you search for the problem online, you'll come up with a lot of hits.

When the turbos go the engine doesn't asplode or anything, it just loses power.
