I really am getting annoyed with this stupid van, so later today I'm going to ask my dad about me working on it.
I think it's much too good a car to go to waste.
Problems : Coolant leak near the back of the engine, needs windshield.
That's it. I think the cooling system is throwing a CEL, but I'm not positive. I need to go and check. I'll have to charge the battery, though.
My parents want to scrap it. It's a 99' Grand Voyager, 3.8L, 119K. It has every option available except leather. I think it'd be a good car for me to drive around since I'm trying to work and go to school, and I think this would be good for me until I'm able to get my own car.
More updates soon.........
LOL good luck. Let me know if you need anything from Alldata.
If you don't have one already, it would probably pay to buy one of these:

There's one around the house somewhere.

That's what I thought. :ohyeah:
Quote from: ifcar on November 27, 2009, 01:53:53 PM
Probably overkill.
Maybe not. It's probably confusing, but I could use a detailed examination of the cooling system, especially the places I can't see.

Replacing the glass on the minivan comes to ~$200.
That's not bad.

It's a 99', fully loaded.
In fair condition, it blue books for 4K. (Private Party)
That's why scrapping it makes me angry.

Nobody's going to pay $4,000 for a 1999 Chrysler van.

Fully loaded=CD player?
A Minivan would actually be a pretty dope first car. There's no way in hell I'd let my teenager have one, though.

3.8L (Largest engine available) Tachometer, infinity sound system (with CD and Casette), capitan's chairs, keyless entry, remote start, rear air (which may be the cooling culprit), 4AT (in comparison with the old 3AT other cars had), alloy wheels, and a power seat.
Pretty much every option except for leather.

1: Why wouldn't you let your kid have a minivan? I think learning on a bigger, slower, more cumbersome vehicle has trained me a little better.
2: It won't be my first car, but more so a car I could use. My mom doesn't want me driving at all, and If I fixed this van, I could use it until I'm able to get my own car.

You're right.
Realistically, (checking the local ads), it'd go for around $2500.

Let me get this straight: you're a kid who just got his license, you don't drive right now, and this would be the first car you get to drive regularly?
That's called a first car, my friend.

My first car was a minivan. So was my second. What's the problem you're trying to allude to?

It's not mine, and my Dad would still be driving it. I consider my 1st car when I'm the sole owner of it.

Ahem... a large, mobile vehicle. With lots of roomy back area. Somewhere you could potentially sleep in...or do something more fun with someone....

That's very interesting McLovin.
I knew two kids who had 350+hp Camaros for their first cars. Didn't have a single accident.
That doesn't mean I'll give my children one of their own. :ohyeah:

I'm sure that if you two little rascals put your heads together, you can think of something.
You're trying to say that a minivan is somehow unsafe?
What was your first car again?

No, I'm saying that I don't want my child to:
do drugs
have sex
drive around in a Minivan with 7 passengers/friends/distractions
Now, he can surely do those things with or without a minivan, but you may as well limit his options. Don't make it any easier for him to tempt fate.
Similarly, a kid can drive a fast car very safely, and he can drive a slow car very unsafely, but it's generally a good idea not to hand your teenager the keys to a Viper.

This may come as a shock to you, but yes, 8 teenagers in a minivan is a recipe for drinking and driving.
Like I said, kids can drink and drive in a single-cab pickup too. They can also break the speed limit in a Plymouth Horizon. Nevertheless you have to think about some of this stuff when you're a parent.
And don't get me wrong, I'm not blasting on your parents or anything. The dad who gave my friend the Camaro is a very awesome, responsible guy, and everything turned out OK. Still, it's not something I will do for my kid.
minivans are great for hotboxing with a bunch of people

I don't see a big difference there between a seven-passenger van and a five-passenger car, but I've never been the drinking type so perhaps there's a tipping point somewhere in there I don't know about.
My parents had me drive our vans simply because I had the shortest commute and they got the lowest gas mileage, and initially because I hadn't yet learned to drive their stickshift cars.

If you were hotboxing it, wouldn't it be more likely for you to crash into a ditch at 10 mph?
This was before that.
