Title: After the fall of Civilization

this might be the vehicle of choice. For over $100K and that much weight, it should come with a hemi or at least supercharge that minvan engine

Not sure how useful a toilet will be at that point, but the shower might prove useful.

Update 12/09: Owner Bill Swails tells us that EarthRoamer went into Chapter 7 bankruptcy but has emerged as "Xpedition Vehicle Service, LLC," a company that services and manufacturers EarthRoamers, whose trademarked name they've somehow kept. Both the Jeep- and F-350-based EarthRoamers are still being serviced and assembled for sale.

The Jeep J8 would have been a better platform for a car like this -- and that's only $50k for what would probably cost more than that to replicate.

Granted they could use a new interior designer but that is fixable.

That with a CIWS mounted would be pretty great for post-apocalyptic living.  Just stock it ahead of time with imperishable supplies and then only make landfall on known safe coasts with your rifle to hunt for food, or mount a fishing rig to be completely independent.

Oh, or this!

I would definitely go with the Peregrine Falcon. I don't want to have to fight the Smokers every time I need to get my fuel tank refilled.

Which is why I would choose a sail boat. Yes I know that the hydraulics on modern yachts are energy hogs,  but one can re-rig for manual deployment.

If the pesky energy problem would not be an an issue in a post apocalypse world then this would be worth a consideration.

Top speed is nearly 70mph, but the fuel consumption at that speed is almost 1000 gallons per hour.  :mask:

I bet that thing could house its own nuclear reactor. Energy problems, solved!

I'm reading a book called Snow Crash, which features a villain that rides on a motorcycle with a warhead sidecar that is set to detonate should he die. I would have a similar system with my nuclear yacht. Nobody would mess with me in the places where my boat is moored.

In the post-apocalyptic world (assuming it's just a regular apocalypse and not a Cougspocalypse), you want an armored nuclear-powered ship big enough to hold a helicopter, a few useful people (mechanics, doctors, gunners, etc.), nuclear fuel processing, fishing rigs, guns, some land vehicles of a few sizes. As long as you're the biggest thing out there, and don't fuck with other people, your society should survive.

Or, just go with a small boat and an ATV, and carry a couple of people and some guns.

as cool as living in a decked-out mega-yacht in a post-apocalyptic world seems, you would have to arm yourself to the teeth to protect yourself, being an inevitable target for pirates. you would most definitely need a crew to operate that kind of firepower, in which case there's always at least a slight risk of a mutiny.

surviving the fall of civilization as a renegade lone wolf type, I would opt for something like this:

Fuck all of that.

If it were me, I'd throw on a couple more CIWS - 20 or so.  Keep a small wing of aircraft, and have at least 30 tactical nukes...or what the hell, the absolute biggest nukes I can fit onto a missile an
F/A-18 can handle.

The Westinghouse nuclear reactor has 140,000 shaft horsepower, and doesn't need to be "refueled" for 15+ years.  And, to appease the few remaining hippies/greenies, I'll keep all aircraft below deck and turn all areas not dedicated to landing/launching aircraft into a wind/solar farm with organic vegetables growing in between.

Brilliant!

Once the Borg boards the Death Star, it's basically over. Stormtroopers are pretty dumb, so it won't take much to assimilate all of them. A couple of guys with The Force might be able to escape, but they won't be able to stop the assimilation.

Brilliant!

YES! A floating city with a necessary 5000 man crew! Feeding for 5k in a post apoclyptic world would be cake! Not to mention having some way to establish your authority over everyone else. (And let's face it subie, your no james bond)

You truly do deserve a prize for this brilliant idea!

Anyways, everyone here is doing it wrong. I would live in a place that was I dunno maybe designed for a post apocalyptic world. You know, maybe like, Cheyenne Mountain??

Yes, because you'd be able to get in there, or anywhere else.

The thing about impenetrable fortresses is that they're good at outlasting a siege, but not so good at living in forever. You still have to go out to get supplies, and there is undoubtedly a horde of violent people in front.

That's true, yet without a doubt the Pegasus was the superior ship.  If Lee "Dumbass" Adama hadn't gone and rammed it into shit I think it would have done a bit better long-term.

To tell the truth, the apocalypse would leave the roads largely intact.

Likely, we'd be riding in/driving cars that were working.

Probably a clapped out Corolla or something.

They wouldn't be intact for long.  In the north, at least, they are in a perpetual state of upkeep and repair.

Who says it has to have 5000 men?  Certainly, it could be run with far less.

Oh, and it's you're, not your, chief.  ;)

I think he was using the correct form of the word there...

Still, an aircraft carrier would need a crew in order to work properly.  It'd be all about finding the balance of people versus the ability of your agricultural deck and fishing combined to feed them all.

A few nukes launched from the mountain to land a mew miles away would take care of that.

Of course, it might complicate the whole leaving issue...

Your is a form of ownership, whereas you're is an abbreviated you are.

Anyways, the USS Harry Truman has a ship crew (minus the air wing and all of it's staff) of 3200.  Of course, I'm sure that if the situation called for it, the staff could be drastically reduced.

Then again, I don't know why Minnie's getting technical over the reality of methods of survival in a thread about a hypothetical apocalypse in which options mentioned include space ships from video games, TV shows, and movies.   ;)

Galactica will survive because the Apocalypse will come from computer networks, and Adama doesn't allow networking on his ship. He requires that all data must be transported between computers on punchcards with the corners clipped off.

The Borg expect to only be attacked by the most advanced technology. Quantum torpedos, subspace weapons etc. Their shields are not generally configured to deal with primitive kinetic weapons as seen in First Contact, so......

That job must suck. It also makes Adama's order during the Ionian Nebula battle, "Tell our flak units to only fire at the nukes heading towards the fleet. We can sustain hits they can't," have all the more impact. I am assuming that "We can sustain hits," does not refer to those glass canopies.

I have to strong survival instincts for a job like that. If I had a choice between fireing at a nuke heading toward Colonial One, or fireing at one about to explode in my face, I know what i would do.
