Five years ago I would never have imagined saying this, but... the newest generation of Kia Optima. It looks good, not just in a "looks good, for a Korean car" kind of way.

Hands down, the best looking midsizer.

I agree, along with the VW Passat CC. I priced out both, each with their own 2.0T and similar options, and the Optima came out almost $10,000 cheaper. I will definitely check out the new Optima when the local dealer gets them in. Actually, the Optima is called "Magentis" here in Canada.

I think it's an attractive design. There are a lot of cars that blow it out of the water, but for what it was it was very attractive.

Giugiaro styled it, and it was done very well.

I'm rather fond of the styling of the '03-'06 Tiburon myself.  In fact, I think I'd place it just ahead of the Genesis Coupe on the beauty scale.  Didn't care for the facelift in '07, though.

The GC looks like a case of trying-too-hard-itis. The Koreans seem to be susceptible to that. There is a point where adding more yields less - take the Sonata, for example. Creases and wavy lines EVERYWHERE.

Kia did a much better design job with that platform. The Optima looks upscale Scandanavian, and the Sonata... not really sure what they were going for.

I'm not a fan of the weird dip for the rear quarter windows and the "Z" shaped beltline is kind of strange, but all in all I think it's a nice design.  Particularly in person.  But there's some awkwardness there that isn't found in the design of the early MkII Tiburons.

Now that I think of it, some of the weirder lines of the GC are akin to some of the lines (namely the disconnected/multi-tiered beltline accent) on the Pininfarina-designed MkI Tiburon.

I think the GC looks great in side profile... I like the aft window treatment and crease lines. The front end looks really strange to me though. Kind of like a demented jack-o-lantern.

Maybe I was a bit loopy when I said the Autobianchi Y is one of the "best" (it still looks VERY good however, in a Chic, very minimalist way) but the Spirra looks bad.

It looks as if the person who made the 3D model used too few polygons.

Now the facelifted Spirra is a pretty car.

The Forte Coupe isn't sold here and I am not a fan of its design based on the press photos.

It's a tragedy that Mercedes diesels are powering some of those monstrosities from Ssangyong!

This "Mercedes" is actually some Korean POS that's "legally badged" as a Mercedes' in certain Asian markets. It's powered by the same engine found in the Rodius, Musso etc. (2.9-l 5-cylinder turbodiesel). It's called "Mercedes-Benz 100".

I rode in my dad's employees Genesis 4.6 last week - aside from the great engine, the A4 drives much better, feels more upscale, and looks better.  You picked the better car by a long shot.

Hence, I briefly considered it.  Probably before I'd brought the A4 into consideration.  In honesty, the A4 was a sudden "aha!" moment for me.  I then instantly knew it was the one. :ohyeah:

I'm a huge fan of the A4. Hell, I convinced my parents to buy one. I, too, would take it over the Genesis.

That said, what you're saying is bullshit. The A4 probably does drive better (but you rode in it....) and IMO, it does look better too. But feels more upscale? Hell fucking no. I wouldn't say the A4 is a better car, it's a car that's better for people like us. If I wanted something cushy, quick and luxurious and I was on a budget, the Genesis would probably be at the top of my list.

That said, for what I think you want in a car, you definitely made the right decision.

No, I drove an 10' a few weeks back for fun and I can safely say from experience, not only does it drive better, but it feels more upscale too.  It didn't have the comfortable ride the Genesis had, but it comfortable enough.

The Genesis probably would have been too much of a floater for me.  I enjoy the stiff, yet highly-cruiseable ride of the A4.

Granted, I've never driven the Genesis, but I suspect it'd be a bit softer.

Hyundai didn't make a world beater. But they made a car that generally costs far more than $40k in the marketplace, and likely a better car than some of the rivals like the Cadillac STS, Lexus GS, etc.

Methinks you're letting those 4 rings skew your perceptions. That's cool.
+1

I felt the A4 to be slightly more spartan than the Genesis I sat in. The A4 probably would've been the better driver, but as for the interior I'd like to sit in, I'd take the Genesis.

As for looks, I think they both look great.

Methinks you haven't driven them both, and if you have, opinions are still opinions.

I've sat in a Genesis, and that's what we're arguing. I didn't dispute the fact that the A4 drives better.

Also, I drive an A4 everyday (at least when I'm at home, which is quite often).

I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't find an A4 to be more upscale than a Genesis sedan.

I rode in my dad's employees Genesis 4.6 last week - aside from the great engine, the A4 drives much better, feels more upscale, and looks better.  You picked the better car by a long shot.

The "feels more upscale" is probably due to the badge. I remember touching a lot of the Genesis's interior trim pieces and they were mostly soft plastics (along with the available leather dash). The upscale feeling in the A4's interior might be because of the actual design of the interior. The materials in the Genesis I have no question are higher quality, but I mean Audi interiors get praise for design pretty much across the board.

So in other words, objectively the Genesis definitely has the higher quality interior. But subjectively, the A4 might edge it out. But of course that differs from person to person.

As for driving better, I'm sure the A4 is much more of a driver's car than a Genesis (although the A4 is hardly a driver's car to begin with).

The A4 really isn't any higher quality than the Passat, but the Genesis is.

I think my post was really vague. I meant to say the Genesis's interior quality is at a higher level than the A4's

That's what I got from your post.

Maybe my post was vague.

EDIT: yeah it was mine.  I meant to say I agreed with your statement.

I like my interiors to look good, I'm not that much of a dash stroker. The Genesis has great materials but the design doesn't speak to me as much as the Audi, which has a great design and the materials are still good.
