Title: Buick Verano!
Post by: 2o6 on January 05, 2011, 11:44:37 PM
Exterior is a bit drab, but the interior is very nice!

This car means that the Regal will need more power and more sporting prowess. Regal should be 2.0T standard, and the 2.8T V6 as the "GS" line.

The interior is remarkably nice for an econo-car derivative. I want to see it for myself at the next car show.

Both the exterior and interior are very attractive.

I agree that there needs to be more differentiation between the Regal and this.

Yeah, it's attractive for sure. But what's the point? It almost reminds me of Cimarron part 2 (obviously not quite so blatant though).

Eh, Buick's not a flagship brand, and selling rebadges certainly isn't beneath them. Not heretical in my book.

So it's an exact clone of the Regal except they just reversed the character line and turned the tail lights upside down.  How creative.

It's a platform mate of the Cruze, and shares more with the Astra than the Cruze. Calling this a rebadge is like saying the A3 is a rebadged Golf.

The Skylark, Somerset and Skyhawk are three compact Buicks that have been in Buick's lineup over the years.

I am not saying it looks bad, but it is terribly derivative and you know it.  It looks great, but I'd bet that the common man wouldn't be able to really tell the difference between the two on the road if not seen side-by-side with nameplates visible unless perhaps they saw the rear ends which are actually different.

When you study the two, sure, they're different.  At first glance and speeding by on the road?  Come on.  It'll look just like the regal, but smaller.

Yes.

Verano is nothing more than an Astra with a trunk and some upscale materials and color choices. Even the dashboard design is the same.

Wish we could get the 5-door and 5/6-speed, would make a lovely S40 or Mazda 3 alternative.

The interior looks fantastic and I'm glad GM didn't dump that 1.4 in there.  I'll reserve final judgement when I see the prices of it but seeing as the Cruze can already hit 27k, I hope this thing isn't too over-priced.

Perhaps they're trying to create a brand design language? Similar to Audi, VW, MB, BMW, Volvo...

I think the 1.6T would be awesome, that's the engine the Chinese market Excelle (same car as Verano) gets.

Agreed.

I like the interior, minus the tacky fake wood.  I was hoping for an Astra with a Buick grille, much like how the Regal is a straight rebadge if the Insignia.  Instead we get a rebodied Chevrolet Cruze that was obviosly designed for the Chinese market.  Yes, I know the Astra and the Cruise share a similar platform, but I sure the Buick version has been considerably softened to suit typical Chinese and American tastes.

The Verano just reminds me a bit too much of this....

The Buick version IS an Astra with a trunk and a Buick face. This car is sold in China as the Excelle GT. If demand is strong enough, I think they may bring over the Excelle XT, which is an Astra 5-door with a Buick badge and a nicer interior.

And isn't this car SUPPOSED to be soft? It's a Buick.....

Seems to me like Buick is trying to change it up a bit. The Regal is much firmer than almost anything they've ever made before. The new Lacrosse is firmer than the one it replaces. I think GM is realizing that they can't really keep making the same cars they used to.

"Only" 177 hp?  It's plenty comparable to Ford/Mazda's 170 hp 2.5L, or Toyota's 169 hp 2.5L (or their 162 hp 2.4L), or Honda's 177 hp 2.4L.
Title: Re: Buick Verano!
Post by: WookieOnRitalin on January 11, 2011, 07:06:32 AM
EX models for Accord produce 190 hp. The Kizashi's motor produces 185 hp.

Toyota: 169 hp (2.5)
Honda: 190 hp
Hyundai/Kia: 200 hp
VW: 170 hp (2.5)
Ford/Mazda: 170 hp (2.5)
Suzuki: 185 hp (180 w/CVT)
Mitsu/Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep: 173 hp
Nissan: 175 hp (2.5)
Subaru: 170 hp (2.5)

The engine is class competitive, but for whatever reason, the Koreans have some really inflated numbers with their 4 cylinders.

2.4 = 200 HP
2.0 Turbo = 274 HP

Insanity.

Refinement is the weak point of the Hyundai 2.4, not the latest iterations of the GM engine.

Depends on the iteration.  The one in the latest Buicks and the '10+ Terrain and Equinox is DI.  The one used in the Malibu, HHR, Skystice, etc is not DI (and still makes 169-175 hp depending on application).

I think it looks for distinctive enough from its Chevy brethren that it's in a separate category and she even gain a wagon version if the Cruze does not.
