Title: If I were to buy a new car today...
Post by: Raza on May 21, 2011, 12:27:56 AM
What would you suggest I buy?  This would be to replace the Jetta.

Purely hypothetical.  Let's say these are my requirements:

Four seats
Sunroof
New
Under $35,000 equipped
Manual transmission is an absolute must.  Non negotiable.
29mpg highway preferred

It's got to be sporty and fun, not too concerned about driven wheels.  Obviously I prefer RWD, then FWD, and AWD in last.

Go for it fellows.

Most of me says I can't buy one because I'm not a douchebag (I'm an asshole, different animal altogether).  But that is a damn fine suggestion.

EDIT:  It really is on the expensive side of this budget.

I'm in the market too, and it seems our criteria are the same except that I'd rather a CPO vehicle. The 128i is at the top of my list.

If they sold the MkV R32 with a real stick, there wouldn't even be a thread here.  Shame VW USA made some bad decisions.

I'm assuming you're averse to CPO because you're primarily interested in leasing?

Not entirely.  I'd prefer not to lease (which would take the budget down), but now I can fit in under a 15,000 mile a year lease.  It's an option to consider.

Like I said, this is purely hypothetical.  If it were for real, you guys would just get some photos of a GTO in a park.

In that case, I definitely would not discount a good CPO car. That warranty's quite helpful on a modern BMW.

I have a friend who will be working in VW Product Strategy pretty soon. I'll let him know you think that.

That said, I'd look at a Mustang GT or Gen Coupe.

To be quite honest, if they had an R32 with a stick in 2008, I'd be driving that and have fewer watches.

The Genesis Coupe is out.  It just doesn't grab me.  The Mustang GT is out because it's too fucking expensive.  Also, it doesn't have a sunroof.  But the Mustang V6 is an interesting alternative.

I'll tell him VW is t3h gh3y. From what he told me, though, a lot of it is going to be involving having 60 different bottles on his desk and seeing which ones will best fit the shape of what will become the next Golf cupholders for North America. He doesn't get to do things like manual transmissions in R32s, but it never hurts to ask.

The V6 'Stang has a sunroof, but the V8 doesn't? WTF?

No, neither do.  The Camaro and Challenger both have fully functional sunroofs though.

The V6 Mustang, on the other hand, makes 29mpg highway.

Isn't the upcoming Golf R supposed to be available with a real stickshift (supposedly as the only available transmission)?  Although that might be pushing the budget a bit.

True.  Basically paying a lot more for street cred, which as a Jetta driver and former Passat driver, I don't really about, obviously.

Camaro V6 could be a great option - for MY2012 it will see 323 hp V6, performance axle and slight tweaks and upgrades.

328i? IS250? C300? You'd have to get a stripper model, though, to fit within the $35k budget.

True.  The Mustang V6 with Performance Package is just as fast as last year's GT and it's much faster and better handler than the Camaro V6.

35K is such an odd number....not enough to get deep into luxury makes, but more than the plebeian cars.

If I wasn't driving its successor every day, then I would totally have forgotten that the Catera ever existed. The CTS starts at $35k and change; theres no comparison to what that same money would buy you at a Caddy dealer 10 years ago. I'd say it's more progress than inflation.

Doubt it, and AWD is the least preferable layout.  Otherwise I'd suggest the WRX, but neither are going to get the mileage numbers he's looking for.

I think if I were a single young professional man, out to impress the ladies, I would be looking at an off-lease and under 20,000 miles 335 convertible.

Off lease they are about $38k, but you could easily negotiate for $35 in this market.

Plus, you get the remainder of the five years and a reset of 50k miles on the warranty.

No oil changes or other mechanical repairs for three years?  Easy sell, really.

With a 70 hour work week and no skills, I can't depend on a car that could potentially break down a lot.

With a 70 hour work week and no skills, I can't depend on a car that could potentially break down a lot.

Like I said, this is purely a hypothetical situation fellows.  Don't get too excited, I'll likely keep the Jetta.
Seriously though, S2000 (or older Boxster S!) + 4 door sedan of your choice. E46s are a lot more reliable than you think.

I actually heard that Jettas are pretty unreliable. Maybe you should consider a Hyundai Accent, or Veloster.

Anyone have experience buying a car sight unseen?

Personally I wouldn't, depending on age, and you living in the north east.

I just wouldn't in the NE. In fact, I would go one step further and say avoid all cars from the NE, we are hard as hell on our cars. I've had 2 cars not from the NE, and both were solid + super reliable; way more than the same cars from here.

I would make a "thing" of it... look up cars down in Florida, buy something and drive it back up the East Coast. Really bond with the car. I have friends who have done this and love it.

I bought my Accent with ever seeing it. I test drove a similar one, then decided I wanted different options.

Depending on your budget/car/time that may not be an option unfortunately.  Example my dad's truck blew an oil line and engine is toast, he didn't get to save as much as he wanted for a new truck and he needs one in a month.  He wanted southern, but it may not be an option.

Ah, well the only reason I would buy one sight unseen is because it is out of a one day's drive distance (500 miles roundtrip).

I bought my SVT Focus sight unseen from a private seller in San Jose.  I had the owner take the car to a Ford dealer of my choosing and then had the dealership send me the results directly and I spoke to the service manager on the phone and had him describe every detail of the car to me.

I also bought our Explorer sight unseen from a dealership in Seattle.  The one and only question I forgot to ask was if it had been smoked in.  Whrn I picked it up I found it had been smoked in....a lot.  Two cans of Lysol later (sprayed in the air intake at the base of the windshield) and the smell never returned.

Truth be told, I'm not ready to let the Jetta go.  We're still in the honeymoon phase, even after 3 years.  Driving it just puts a smile on my face, every time.  But I would like something else.  I miss the two car setup and a roof that goes away.

True.  And that's a good thing for me.  If I had unlimited space and $35K, I'd have 30 beaters.

The only two things keeping me from having three cars right now is money and space.

This doesn't harm anything?  My friend recently bought a car that has been smoked in (not awful, but you can tell), and this might be the fix.

Well, I talked to my mother about keeping the car at her house (since it would cost an extra $150 a month to park it here) and she seemed not only amenable, but pretty much behind the idea.

Funny, the other day I was contemplating opening a piggy bank account to start saving for a Rolex DeepSea.  Now I'm looking at sports cars that cost roughly the same.  I think that's a better use for the money.

There's unseen and there's unseen. If there are meticulous photos of every inch of the car, and you or someone who knows more examine them for every detail, and there is an as-advertised guarantee (e.g. eBay), then it should work fine. I've heard a lot of just-fine stories about this kind of thing.

IMO, the reliability aspect of new car vs. used car is greatly overblown. I have had a lot of cars, none of them newer than seven years at time-of-purchase, some of them total beaters with 240 kmiles, and I have only been stranded two times in any car ever (if you discount the times a battery has died due to storage or abuse).  Once was the crappy second Trooper, and the other was Friday, when I was driving a brand new off-the-lot with 177 miles Dodge 2500 for work, and the brakes got squishy on the top of a mountain (good times). I would trust either of my vehicles to get me 500 miles away, no problem (100 kmiles and 140 kmiles).

I really like having a new car with my 4-hour commute. It's too many miles at once to deal with being stranded at all, and I never ever ever want to have car problems when I'm driving through the Chicago ghettos in the middle of the night. A low mileage used car would probably be just as well, but meh. I'm the only one who has had his hands up under the hood since I drove it off the lot. No other monkey butts have had a chance to half ass fuck it up.

Used cars are certainly more reliable than they've ever been, but it's naive to not expect any downtime.  Mazda is rolling with 140K miles, on original front brake calipers, tie rod ends, wheel bearings, alternator, etc.  Those will likely need to be replaced at some point, and having a second car makes any issues less urgent.

I would trust the Mazda to drive to California tomorrow, but it's still right at the point where many cars will require some maintenance/reconditioning (100K to 160K miles).

Granted. I just mean that if one is concerned with being able to get home, a used car isn't much more of a risk than a new car. You can plan for mechanic's visits almost all of the time.

I used to be a two car man for sure.  Itchin for a car to compliment the miata.  The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of one car.  I don't need something too practical really, and when you compare cars that are literally twice the price as opposed to two separate cars, you get yourself into a completely different territory of performance.

For example:  Miata + a daily driver practical car, or a BMW 1M?  Seems like an easy choice.  I'd have more fun with the BMW everyday than I would in the miata or any other car.

Most new cars also come with the guarantee of a loaner car if yours breaks down, plus roadside assistance.  Granted, you could always just sign up for AAA or similar to get the roadside assistance.

If you buy in the NE, you just have to find the owners who keep the car in the garage and baby it. We bought our BMW from a lawyer (or something along those lines) who kept it in the garage and didn't drive it much, so it was in great condition.

And Raza, never pay for a car before you look at it. You can "buy it" and when you go to pick it up, check it out and make sure it's in good shape and what you really want. If it's not, just back out.

Yep... I was seriously considering getting a car to keep just outside the city, but even outside the cost, having to travel ~30 mins plus each way just to get to my car would have sapped a lot of the fun out of it.

One idea for Razr could be to switch cars every couple of days. The sports car would have to be reliable, but if he knows there's a string of nice days coming up he can go see his family and switch it up. That's actually not a bad idea.

I agree. If you don't do destructive mods and stay on top of maintenance a decent 10 year old car will give you a solid 2-3 more years no problem. Just have to watch out for models with big red flag issues.

I was thinking even weeks or months at a time where I would have the sports car.  I'd have to make sure I can park both cars at my building, even though it's only one at a time.  I doubt there would be a problem, I'd just have to register a second car with them.

Why wouldn't you be able to park the sports car at the building?

And yea a sports car >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a watch

It would cost an extra $150 a month.

What about an Infiniti G-37?  I'm not sure of the price, but it would probably meet your other requirements.

Especially if the car comes with a built-in clock.

Truth be told, I'm not ready to let the Jetta go.  We're still in the honeymoon phase, even after 3 years.  Driving it just puts a smile on my face, every time.  But I would like something else.  I miss the two car setup and a roof that goes away.

Two of the local VW dealerships each have a CPO Wolfburg with less than 30k miles, this post makes me want to go test drive one of them.

The G37 is a technically good car, but for some reason, the thought of owning one makes me cringe.  If someone gave me one, I'd defend it to the hilt, but I wouldn't spend my own money on one.

Go for it.  Mine has twice that and I can't get over how much I enjoy it.  Replacing it is going to be quite a job.

Just out of curiosity, have you driven it? Pretty sure if I was shopping that segment I would probably end-up with one. The 335i and S4 are better cars, but I can't really believe they are $10-20k better.

It's a fantastic car...if we're talking about the sedan that is.  The coupe has too many faults; namely the sound it makes and the ridiculously low ceiling.  I had to rake the seatback so much that it wasn't even close to comfortable.  This is not bias speaking either, because I was planning on the coupe being my next car at the time I test drove it.  The problem with the sedan?  A manual tranny is only available on the most expensive version of it, and the auto's paddle shifters are far too slow to react.

One thing I will say is the V6 in the G is pretty coarse. The new one's interior is alright, better than the Bimmer's IMO, but nowhere near the Audi's. Plus w/the Audi, if it matters, you get awesome AWD and stickshift. So there's enough that if what you need/value is unavailable in the G but available in the S4 the price bump would be worth it. If the Audi were RWD and lighter it would be a no brainer

I haven't actually.  After a G35, a 370Z, and several 350Zs, I have hard time believing that it's any more engaging than those and they left me somewhat cold.

The first gen G35 sedan sure is holding its styling. Every time I see one I think, "wow, still looks great." The second get G3x sedan, not so much. The styling seems too faddish and isn't wearing too well IMO. But on paper they're great deals, and with a slightly used model easily had well below $30k. For 2011 the dealio is they've greatly isolated the VQ so NVH is far better than in previous years; reported to be actually quite good. The base wheels on the sedan look absolute horrible - I'd got with the 18" split spoke upgrade and then I think the G37 could float up to the top if I wanted to spend that much (TBD).

Anyone have experience advice on buying a car sight unseen?
Yes, do not do that.

I ordered my truck sight unseen, but that is a new vehicle purchase of something I am already familiar with.

Hate to see you get a pile.

I'm certainly apprehensive about the idea.  If it's close enough to my buddy down south, I'm sure he wouldn't mind checking it out for me, but if it's not near South Carolina, taking a look at it is a big problem.

Sadly, you have to pony up to the priciest trim to get a stickshift in the coupe as well.

Even more than the 1st gen, the 1st gen coupe. I still turn my head whenever I see one, I absolutely love them. They've aged ridiculously well.

100% agreed about the second gen, though.

I was never a fan of the 1st-gen sedan, but the second-gen looks quite nice. I do like the 1st-gen coupe.

+1.  1st gen sedans looked too tall and narrow.  They just didn't look like sport sedan.  It looked a little awkward, IMO.  The 2nd gen's lower, wider stance and faster greenhouse shape leaves no question of its sporting intentions.

Coupes of both generations look great.  I think I may actually prefer the 1st gen to the 2nd in looks (but much prefer the 2nd gen's interior).

I never liked the front fascia of the G35, but IMO the G37 changed that.

But the stance and simpler profile of the G35 coupe is better, IMO. I also thought the wheel choices of the G35 (especially the sedan) looked like crap.

I don't actually know the dimensions, but the G37 looks really big (both the coupe and the sedan).

If I had to stay under 35k for a new car I'd probably go with a 1 series or a Camaro. I don't think I could go back to FWD again.
