My grandma had a station wagon one of those. We borrowed it when we were visiting her in Montana where there weren't any speed limits at the time. It wouldn't go over 85.

I have many favorite sedans. I prefer sedans over sports cars. But this is my favorite: the W116 and W123.

The speedometer stopped at 85, that doesn't mean the car wouldn't go more than 85.

E90 3er honestly, although the ATS might sway me after I see it and/or drive it.

Yes, I kinda like the E90 better than the E46 (***duck***).

I think the E90 has a much better shape than the E46 sedan, which I always thought looked awkward (though I think the E46 coupe is basically automotive perfection), especially at the C-pillar and aft. The M3 is beautiful IMHO because it also combines the E92's front, which I think is better than the E90's.

In concept, the S4. However, reliability has been poor which will forever keep me a way. There have been lots of issues with the M/T - it's a $5,700 unit too.

In practicality, the Acura TL-SH AWD w/6MT. Unbeatable reliability, good performance, but so-so AWD system and styling. This is my top contender.

So so AWD??? are you kidding.... SH-AWD is second to none! I think it was a Automobile head to head with the TL mentioned and an S4, and whilte the TL was slower in all acceleration categories, it virtually tied the S4 on the track... thanks to SH-AWD... PLUS everyone for some reason forgets that the TL is currently larger inside and out then the E Class, 5 Series and A6, and still holds its own against smaller cars due to the "price" comparison. The TL ROCKS!

If you haven't driven SH-AWD vs the others, you should... it's the future of AWD

If they made Acuras appealing again, styling wise, I would be in the same boat. The car I learned to drive on was an 87' Legend Coupe and I loved the way that thing looked (it drove pretty good too). The TL had me through the 3rd Gen cars, but the ones after have just never caught my eye.

I think the current TL is decent. I like the rear end, even though it looks a little space-shippy. I always thought the TL was a boring looking car, to be honest, in previous generations. The CL was OK... we had one in my family for a couple years.

I'm looking for inclement weather prowess, not handling prowess. Sure the Acura system can split torque every which way but it mostly powers the front wheels and only when things get wonky does the system get reactive - this "reactive" nature can have lag and can result in so-so performance on snow and wet roads.

I like the Subaru system the best; consistent F/R torque split with clutches - there is no reaction time or large FWD or RWD bias as in many/most other systems, and only when things get dicey does the system get reactive. My body of evidence says the consistent-split Subaru style works better in snow and wet roads. Problem is, I'm not a fan of Subarus.

All in all, the TL is the front runner, primarily because of the M/T (and that my Accord has been such a rock star).

However, I'd have to agree with YO on my favorite. Merc CLS63. But I'll take mine in matte silver.
(not counting the Audi A7/S7 as a sedan)

Runner-up: matte black Caddy CTS-V

Honorable mention: Jaguar XJ Supercharged

I would take a CTS-V in a heartbeat, but the interior creeks and groans in the corners are enough to steer me away from the regular CTS to the Infiniti dealership.  The front end styling of the 335i bothers me enough not to buy it, and a 535i on the used market is only a couple grand more than the same year 335i.  I could rock a 535i, but I need to drive one first.

I am indeed not a huge fan of the Acura look as represented by its recent all-new designs (TL, MDX, RDX, ADX). If it weren't for my experience with the Accord, I'm not sure the TL would be a top-tier consideration.

However, Acura does have some technology issues; through 2011 the RL and TL were soldiering on with 5sp ATs and the V6 is still the SOHC/timing belt J-Series that dates back to the mid-1990s (even so, NVH is as good as anything in the class).

Ah, cars from the golden era of car design.  That stunning Pontiac is even better as a two door convertible.

I test drove a used 4 door 65 Chevy Impala around 1968.  One problem was the poor sealing between the front and rear windows.  Water and air leaks were fairly common.

If they made Acuras appealing again, styling wise, I would be in the same boat. The car I learned to drive on was an 87' Legend Coupe and I loved the way that thing looked (it drove pretty good too). The TL had me through the 3rd Gen cars, but the ones after have just never caught my eye.

I thought very seriously about buying a mint first gen coupe for about $2k a few years back, but the owner was a flake. That was a gorgeous car. Much better looking than the 2nd gen coupe imho. (1st gen coupe > 2nd gen sedan > 1st gen sedan > 2nd gen coupe).

My current favorite two sedans (should be no surprise):

(Also just like this one, though I would want to see one with the black out package in person)

The SM Opera ruins everything I like about the SM. (Namely the roofline and greenhouse). The transition is inelegant, and can't hold a candle to the DS.

No prizes for guessing that I disagree. I've always liked the SM (in any configuration) more than the DS, but that's akin to saying I've always liked Pol Roger more than Mo?t. There are no losers here.

A slight caveat, however. My DS would have to be the later swivelling-headlight model - the fixed-lamp models never quite did it for me.

I was of the same view until I saw their display down at the local auto show.  The MKS is a far more impressive car when viewed in person.  Also, the MKT Town Car, for those wanting a luxury CUV, is quite imposing.  The only oddball, in the lineup, is the Navigator.

Certainly, much more has to be done to resurrect it as a true 'luxury' brand, but they're off to a good start.  They still need that V12 'halo' car.

I had exactly the same wow experience with the first BMW I ever drove, it was a 325i E36 sedan demo that I had loaned to me by my dad back in 96, when he worked for a while at the first BMW dealer in Mexico.

Before driving it, I used to be a Mopar and VW fan and thought BMWs were outrageously expensive and not worth the money. That all changed that day, I remember giving back the keys to my dad and telling him "Now I think this car is actually cheap." After that I was set and started saving and eventually got a used E36 325is in 98.

The BMW "magic" is hit and miss for me. One of the first Bimmers I drove was an E30 convertible, and I thought it was a super neat car compared to anything else I'd driven at the time (I was 18). As I got to drive nicer cars later on, I drove an E46 sedan that my brother was looking to buy, and I thought it was just okay. Another one I drove was an E34 525i, which I thought was exceptional, until I drove a Maxima from the same year, and found that it felt exactly like a FWD version of the E34.

My favorite, of course, if my brother's E46 M3. He let me drive it from the dealer lot to the gas station when he picked up the car, and getting back into the Caddy seriously made me feel like a geriatric :frown:

Bimmer.  Before I had driven one, I would have easily said the G8 GT, but now, I can't honestly say that.

I mean, my SVT Focus is one of the best handling affordable cars built in the last 10 years, and my car still feels like it just came off the lot.  No rattles, no squeaks, no noise, and the shifter, clutch, steering, seats, doors, etc. all feel brand new still.  But when I got out of the Bimmer and got back into my car, I almost started to cry.  My car felt like a bucket of bolts afterwards.  I told my wife that I could easily see us with more than 1 BMW in the garage in a couple years.

Hahaha! That's how my wife felt after driving my 7 sereis for the first time. She hated BMWs for the yuppie image, but now knows why they are so revered by enthusiasts. Then she drove our son's E46 325i Sport. Loved it and wanted to buy it from him, even with 250k miles on it.

They may have weird electrical issues, and take a bit of extra maintenance over an appliance car, but they will reward the owner with a driving experience that is very nearly unequalled.
