Title: color palette
Post by: veeman on August 24, 2012, 10:33:29 AM
as most cars are black, grey, silver, and white i'm finding in general a lack of the really cool colors that age real well (not the quality of the paint mind you) that cars from the 70s had.  Particularly interesting shades of darker brown and burgundy that are very masculine.

today i find most manufacturers offer little appetizing outside of the standard 4 i mentioned.  red is too much of a law enforcement trap.  light green and light blue are too feminine particularly with the rounded curvy shape everything has now.  the light brown - "sand" or "champagne" looks so nondescript and forgettable.  there are some cool shades of darker blue out there but blue, i find, is tough to pull off.  it's gotta be done just right or it'll look drab.  the early generation lexus is had a sweet shade of blue i remember.

i'm missing the darker browns and burgundies!  porsche offers a cool dark brown and so do a few others but more need to do it

People are too hung up on resale value these days, so they buy colours that are "safe".

I like black and gray.  All my cars have been black and gray.  I like blue too.  But not all blues.

This must be how I ended up driving bronze-ish cars for 10 years and counting. It's not the prettiest color on the lot, and dealers eventually mark down the price because of it.

As much as I don't want a 3-peat of retiree gold-dust colored cars, I did catch an autotrader ad for a bronze 335i convertible listed for a good $2k less than comparable cars.

My car is about as bright of a blue as you can get.  I was a little indifferent at first, but its grown on me.

Protege5 was silver.
Miata was dark green with a tan top.

At this point, I think I'll pretty much only get gray, black, blue, or green.  I don't seem to like much else.

I'm such a sucker for orange, despite the fact that I'd never own an orange car.

(That said, I've often thought about how my car would look in orange.)

I buy would I like and only think resale with the brand/model, but so sad there are some that aren't willing to buy what they really enjoy. I like lighter colors because they look cleaner longer, but always hope for something different. I am extrely happy with the unique Cosmic White Metallic of my Volvo XC60 R-Design. It meets all criteria for me.

Sweet selection of cars in orange and orangish! Volvo has had some awesome cars in various cool orange, gold, bronze and related hues, some shown in you link (above). I like the new Volvo S60 T6 in what I call copper, a bight, shiny and quite elegant and sporty metallic. Not certain if that's the official name, though.

Nissan helped make orange a popular choice again when the new for MY04 Maxima SE was released in one of the nicest shades in years, perhaps decades. It was a special "launch" color and was often paired with the special four seat package with full black leather interior. I think there was a tasteful matching interior color accented in black also available that model year.

Seems a few new cars are starting to offer darker browns.  Jetta and Taurus do.

It seems even green has largely fallen off the pallet.  I remember in the 90s, emerald and forest greens were pretty popular and widely available on mainstream cars.  Now it seems like the only greens are very bright lime greens on niche cars.

I honestly don't hate it. Although if you plan on taking them offroad (as I'm finding myself doing more frequently lately), white is best since it won't show tree branch scratches as much after running through trails in the woods.

Metallic silver, or grey would be best for that.

For people like you the German companies offer the individualization programs. Audi currently has over 100 paints on offer for the A3 and upwards. Even the Golf is available in 35 colors. The problem is that in America 95% of cars are bought off the lot, so such programs are useless over there.

I don't like green.  There are a few cars that do it right, but it's mostly dark green on sports cars.  I'm glad they're disappearing.  I wish the Juke and Veloster would disappear too.  And other ugly things, so I don't have to look at them anymore.

i really like orange but it has to be orange (the super bright kind) otherwise i don't like it.  also only really looks good on a vw bug.  the problem with putting it on a challenger or raptor or something like that is i generally drive slightly over the speed limit and i find bright colors like red, bright orange, and yellow are like pheromones to law enforcement.

the orangey-tannish colors i'm seeing that volvo and nissan and a few others have got i don't like.  just a personal thing.  seems too trendy as opposed to the classic browns of the 70s.

the only yellow/gold i've ever liked was on the older model s60s.

If you get that then then I would imagine you are right, but generally small scratches and dirt get hidden very well by silver.

No, white. I can say with total certainty, having scratched the shit out of white, dark grey, light grey/silver, and some other colors.

White is bad at hiding dirt, but it's the only way to go for scratches.

There are some great pearlescent whites available that I consider to be near perfect at concealing everything undesirable. I see that Honda will offer what looks like a promising pearl white for MY13. Some are just white with metallics added. I prefer the richness of an authentic pearl coat. Cadillac and Volvo have great shades and I am assuming BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Luxes, Infiniti and other luxury makes each have a nice quality pear coat white or two.

My advice: Go with an authentic color for your year, make and model. Another shade or color offered the same MY is okay, if it compliments the interior, IMO, but I think a successful paint job is one that leads people to think it is original through and through. Keep us posted, bro!

First or second generation Taurus was available in an emerald green metallic that was decent looking.  Jags pretty much always look good in a dark BRG.  Not these super bright, neon greens like the Veloster.  Real, grown-up shades of green.

Yeah, I drove my LR2 through the car wash like two times in a row last week after off-roading the shit out of it in the NJ Pine Barrens. I heard one scrub pine branch nastily rub across the driver's side, but no evidence of a scratch. My mom had a Durango for 14 years (97-11) and there didn't appear to be one scratch on it.

I was actually liking the navy blue LR2 but glad I got the white since I'm ending up doing a lot of exploring on the sand/mud trails in the woods lately.

I desperately need tires better suited for off-road though. Thinking General Grabber AT2s.  :mask:

Automatic car washes are the worst thing you can do to your paint.  You're better off leaving it dirty!

Hand wash or nothing.

Myself, I like the current S60's copper color. I do not think I would buy one in this color (except used). Volvo currently has some great colors to choose from, I think.

The best colour I've ever seen is a Pearlascent White by Lexus. Amaizing shade and depth in colour, the closest to a pearl I've ever seen .... basically the best thing ever to come out of Lexus :P

In another note, brown has becoming fashionable among the Germans. First it was VW with the Mocca Brown, then Porsche and then Audi, Mercedes and BMW followed with their own shades. VW intruduced their own too. I see allot of them here in Dubai.
