So sad.

I don't think that car is really forgotten wimmer. Anyways, anybody remember the 1 hour Chrysler commercial known as the Viper tv series?

I saw a few Chrysler concepts in the first 10 minutes. That silver car that the mayor or whatever pulls in with in the first few minutes looked like the Thunderbolt concept.

The rental cars which the Griswold's drove in European Vacation have always puzzlled me.
Let's start with the car they rent in England, an "M" (suffix) registration Austin Maxi 1750.
Keep in mind this film was made in 1985. The Austin Maxi was produced from 1969 to 1981 and the M-suffix registration on the plate means Clark Griswold's rental car was first registered between August 1973 and July 1974. So, here we have a 1974 model year car still being used in a rental fleet in 1985? What the hell kind of broke-ass car rental company is renting out ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD cars?!?!?
Then there's this one.......
This appears to be a 1972-73 Citroën DS21 with some strange looking body modifications. Those "pontoons" on the front and rear fenders serve no purpose and neither do the running boards, which no standard DS ever had. They sort of make the car look like a pre-war Tatra. And what are those mirrors doing way up front, mounted just behind the headlamps? I can only assume these modifications were done by the film's producers to make the car wider and therefore easier to get stuck in that narrow archway in Germany. Still, why would a car rental firm be hiring out a 12-to-13 year old car, anyway? Especially one that had been out of production for a full decade?
Even weirder, it turns out the Citroën DS21 used in European Vacation is actually an Italian-spec model, as evidenced by the taller and narrower rear plate housing on the rear of the car, seen here.....
At least when the Griswolds get to Italy, they finally get a modern, current-production car as a rental in the form of this Fiat Regata sedan.
The Regata was produced from 1983 to 1990 and was based on the Ritmo/Strada hatchback. Unlike the two previous cars, this is something I would have expected to see in a car rental fleet circa 1985.
youre over thinking it, dude...

Am I? Have you ever seen Avis/Hertz/Enterprise renting out 12-year-old cars?
I guess they used older cars because they knew that most American viewers wouldn't know the difference anyway.
Here is one from one of my favorite movies. Not really a forgotten car but one that's little known, the car from Clockwork Orange
(http://cinemafanatic.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/a_clockwork_orange_car.jpg)
It was called a Durango 95 in the film but it's really an Adams Probe-16. It was also featured on Top Gear a few years back for a restoration project but lost out to a Mini rally car.

Hello! It's the Griswolds! Of course they'd end up with the shittiest cars possible. Not to mention they were screwed from start to finish by the Pig In a Poke people. Remember the shitty hotel room in England?
There was a Hollywood "soap opera" movie on TCM yesterday. Just before I switched channels, the movie managed to catch my attention. The opening scenes were of a yellow 1953 Allard J2. I can't tell you any details of the movie, but another car I had to look up turned out to be a Woodill Willys sports car.

The Citroen was gussied up by George Barris, who also did the Wagon Queen family Truckster from the original movie, its supposed to be a ridiculous looking car in a ridiculous movie.
This is one of my all-time favorite movie cars, even though the movie sucked.
The Phantom Corsair (1938), built by Rust Heinz (of the Ketchup people!), and fully meant to be put into limited production, but his death in 1939 killed those plans as well. He paid to have the car featured as "The Flying Wombat" in a movie called "Young in Heart."
The car is still popular at concourse events around here, but I don't know if the owner is local or not.
I'd prefer not to have a car made by a guy named Rust. Just like having a baseball pitcher named "Homer" seems like a bad idea.

Maybe GM revives the Oldsmobile brand before then? You know, in response to some future nostalgia craze? Hey, it could happen!
I remember getting a Hot Wheels Olds Aurora once that was packaged promoting the movie. I don't recall seeing that car in the movie but the future cars sorta look like the Aurora.

Most American cars had downturned and/or concealed exhausts in the 70s and 80s. Even performance cars like the Mustang, Camaro, and Trans Am.
My exhaust is both concealed and downturned.
I must drive a diesel. :mask: (it does have enough torque to be one.. missing the gas mileage benefits however)
I haven't been able to find any evidence to back up my memory, but I believe that the Olds diesels had a rectangular silver "diesel" badge on the trunklids.

Turned down or concealed exhausts versus prominently exposed exhaust outlets is largely an aesthetic feature (though I suspect sometimes they were chosen because they were cheaper). It has no meaningful impact to performance. Diesels likely do it so that they aren't blowing soot directly at the cars behind them. Other times it's a styling thing (some think it looks cleaner). I don't think I've ever seen a BMW 7-series with visible exhaust pipe outlets.

It's definitely a styling thing. And regarding older diesels, I believe it was definitely done so that soot wouldn't be blown towards the trailing cars.
Down-pointing-exhausts just look... "silly" to me.
