Title: Bought me a V8
Post by: AutobahnSHO on August 11, 2013, 01:09:55 PM
So I was looking at motorhomes and happened on this, a 1988 Chevy conversion van.
$1400 and it's mine.  Bought it for traveling to see the kids in Maryland- no hotel rooms and I can shower at Fort Meade or Annapolis gyms for free..

A/C doesn't work but drives fine so far- needs all the TLC an OLD vehicle, shampoo carpets, minor cosmetic help.
Has an old school CB and TV (I was surprised it picks up one station- I thought the analogs were all off the air!), the captain seats all swivel around, table can be in the back or middle (could make another, it's a simple pipe+ wooden assembly), lots of cupholders and ashtrays...

It's HUGE inside!!!!
I could care less about the exterior but think it would be fun to eventually pimp out the inside..

Any guesses on what my gas mileage will be? I bought it then went for an Army exercise  in Indiana for 10days, I filled it up for the first time last week and will drive it a bunch to get a feel for that...

Thats the REAL Swagger Wagon!!! My cousin has one as his tow vehicle and cries constantly about it being a gas hog. You'll be lucky to get 10mpg!

Sweet.

It only needs two things.

About 30 square yards of red velour.

Shag carpeting.

Congrats! It looks very clean on the outside, especially for the age. When I was a kid we loved it when my grandparents would visit in their 1994 Chevrolet van -- so roomy and plush. My grandfather even built custom beds for it, and they traveled cross-country in it several times.

LOLS LOLS LOLS

Yeah, I think I could use it to tow (eventually I want a popup but hopefully by the time I have money for something like that I'll also have money for a FLEX or something)

I want to get it detailed- just INSIDE. What is the appropriate rate to vacuum/shampoo everything?

AND the back "bed" isn't really long or wide enough for me to sleep on. I'm thinking a hammock would be perfect. Then I could take my kids, they could all fit on the bed and floor easy...!

(but the middle row captain's chairs lean so far back it's almost flat anyway. Could sleep in those...)

There is a drivein movie less than an hour from here. I wanted to take VAN but they put the audio on the radio and the rightside of VAN's stereo doesn't work, plus it's a crappy old GM deck to begin with...

You could probably dump the TV for extra storage space; but under no circumstances are you ever allowed to get rid of the CB.

Yeah, hate to be a wet blanket, but I'm not sure this was a good idea. Conceptually it's neat but man, I see a repair nightmare on the horizon (IMO, it'll be the AT, which takes a beating in a big brick like this). I do hope it works out though. Oh, and 13 mpg ;).

Um, no. Not even close.

I got engaged with ex in less than a month of dating, slept with her about a month later, got married 6 months later.

I have now been dating new flame for 2 months, I said "I can't get married before April"... That is the absolute earliest we would be married. If things continue to work out as well as they have (which is 1000009x better than they were with Ex....)

So a $23 piece of plywood later, I turned the middle captain's chairs around, tilted them all the way back, threw a couple blankets on top of the captain's chairs to elevate the "middle" of the bed to the same height as the back of the folded bench and "head" of the captain's chairs, and I have a queen-size bed!!!

Part of it is soft and part is plywood hard, so I'll throw an air mattress (already own a bunch of those) on top of it...

You can shampoo the seats/bed/carpeting yourself if you've got some stain remover or upholstery shampoo in a spray bottle and a vacuum capable of handling wetness (aka, a ShopVac).  Sure, it isn't the same as a steam extractor, but you can always just spray everything down, give it a little scrub with a carpet brush, and suck it up with the vacuum.  Same concept, different approach.

Why does it have to make sense?  You wanted it, you bought it and you're happy with it.  Who cares what a bunch of random dudes with no lives on the internetz think about it?

BTW, I saw an Autotrader ad for a 2001 Dodge Ram passenger van with the 3.9 V6 (111,000 miles) going for only $2,500.  I almost picked up the phone before coming to my senses!

The 3.9L has a hard enough time hauling a regular cab 5 speed Dakota. I can't imagine how taxing the weight of a van would be.

I still say you'd find happiness if you could figure out how to rig a hammock in that thing.

Definitely!!   That would be easier than hauling plywood and air mattresses- I DO want to use it as a van, too.!

If you're not trying to get in her pants then why are you being so nice?

I'd throw her a blanket and a walkie talkie so I can tell her what to bring to me for breakfest.

OH BTW

- ------------ ------------ ----------------

Van drives just fine, but after driving 20min it starts running rough (like missing) and service light comes on. Then a couple minutes later it cleared up and drove fine.
-Where should I start with that?!?!...         (previous owner says plugs and wires were all changed out.)
(yes it's an OLD VAN that I bought for $1400.... I'm under no illusion that it didn't need work.)

Could be the fuel pump, oxygen sensor, injectors being crappy. You can make the service light blink with a jumper to get codes out of it. (I only learned this 60 seconds ago after googling)

It's probably TBI, considering the era. I want to say the last carbureted vehicles on the US market was in the early '90s sometime, but am not 100% sure on that.

I have a big comfy sofa and two bedrooms. I just don't feel comfortable being under the same roof and wanting her... thought about her staying with friends but that's tons of hassle..

I'll have more time to work on van next week,  thanks all for starting pointers...

Later carbed cars had electronic part throttle solenoids, electronic vacuum advance, and shift timing. Also several sensors were tied to the CEL, like trans fluid temperature.

I wanna say GM was mostly done with them by 87, but I think there were holdouts until 91 or so.

It seems like Will thinks that everything will be perfect with this new woman who lives very far away if only they can avoid accidentally sleeping together, as if there is nothing else that could possibly go wrong.

I hope it works out, though.

Actually we'll be getting married out West, I live in South Carolina. I can't pick where I live, she can. Sounds like she is going to sell her townhouse (3bedroom but she bought when the market was low low, and it's a college town with lots of couples getting married so perfect market), so we'll likely be in hotel. ;)  We're talking of going honeymooning to Yellowstone too...

THEN finances will be tight for a while, might stay living in the 2bedroom apt which will be CRAMPED with 3 kids joining us for the summer. (or I could get an air conditioner and rig up the van for oldest boy to have "his own bachelor's pad"???)

A 2-BR apartment for 2 parents and 3 kids?  Dude.  Put off the expense of the wedding/honeymoon for a while and put that shit towards a house or at least something with more room.  Jesus.

1- I'm paying $1370/month alimony until June 2015.
2- kids are only with me Thanksgiving 2013; springbreak, summer, and Christmas 2014; springbreak 2015 then I will be buying/finding a bigger place. However this could change, if my girl finds a job here after we marry, we could move somewhere bigger sooner.
3- Jesus has been very helpful in the decision making.  No need to curse him though...
4- IF there is any honeymoon involved, it will be very low-expense.  Like everything else I'm doing right now, I'm living on a budget. See #1 above

5- The ring I bought is not the perfect ring but I paid cash. I'm doing things backwards- I bought a plain white gold band so that someday I can get her a band of diamonds like she wants- to put next to it. She is cool with it, so I'm cool with it. (she doesn't want a solitaire or some gaudy big cluster..)
6- asked her what she wants to do as far as the wedding= Temple is free, then she said she wants to go have dinner with her family and mine. That's it. No need for reception, no big frill, no big production. She said she has considered eloping, (as have I) but at least SOME kind of sharing with the family would be nice.
Maybe I'll surprise her with a (NICE) homemade cake or a cheap decorated one. But nothing fancy.

She's totally practical as far as money goes- she has a decent job and can buys quality nice stuff whenever she wants but is cutting that back because of expenses flying out here and future stuffs...     (paid cash herself on the house downpayment, knows how to save for other stuff, etc...)
