Just thought I'd start a thread and see what people do with their phones while driving. I'm surprised OEMs aren't integrating in some sort of phone holder spot. Subaru is kind of doing that with some cars (I think the Outback has like a phone slot in the console?).
For the BRZ, there's a center console with a cupholder insert. There's a slot in the side, I usually plug my phone in and then stand it up in there. In the Genesis, I've been running a charging cable from the center console to the cup holder, and just leaving it there.
I'm seeing some pretty cool mount systems on Amazon, but I'm a big hesitant. Any of you guys have unique solutions? Just keep it in your pocket?
I keep mine in my pocket unless I'm charging it in the car, then it goes in either the cup holder or the center armrest console.
I keep it in the DIN cubby under the radio.
Next to the ashtray, in a rubber lined pocket that was designed to hold a pack of cigarettes. Lighter is in th same pull out drawer.
With the Bluetooth radio installed, I can plug in the phone and close the drawer; phone is t visible at all.
But most of the time, it stays in my pocket.
I bought one of these:
Expensive, but got rid of the useless cupholders and it has a 12V power supply so I can charge my phone from it.
I tuck it underneath my crotch, keeps the boys warm.
Just keep it in my pocket or put it in the cupholder. When I driving I'm driving, I don't need to dick around with my phone.
Best phone holder ever

Cupholder between the seats, unless it's charging in the armrest.
El Camino - passenger seat if I'm alone, between the seat and trans tunnel if someone is in the passenger seat, or up on the dash if it's charging. Or in my pocket.
Mazda - cupholder
VW - passenger seat or pocket
G8: there's a nice little slot where the Aussie versions hand brake went. I lay it in there. In my work van it goes in the cup holder. When I'm on my bike it goes in the rear of the bike where I have a charger thats hard wired to the battery.
I have a nice little windshield mount so that I can still use my cupholders for....cups, and I can see the call display. I have a bluetooth add-on for the stereo, so I never have to touch the phone.
I need to figure out something for the E46. I had an iPhone USB connection head unit in the Focus and I kinda miss it. I had a nice little cubby under the head unit that fit my phone perfectly. I guess I can give up a bit of phone connectivity for 100 more hp and RWD.
Anybody use one of those vent mounts for an iPhone? I wonder how stable they are and if they damage my vent.

This is exactly what I do.
It's up on the dash if I'm using it as a GPS+charging (windshield mount), in the passenger seat if it's charging, and I'm cruising, in between/under my legs if I'm doing spirited driving.
I got iOttie mounts on the M5 and MINI. They work great.
On the 1M I use the cup holder and on the E46 I should get a mount as well. I just put it sideways on the lower center console above the thingamagig that covers the ashtray.

My brother had an iphone vent mount before he upgraded to an iphone 6. Worked pretty well in his Focus and was stable. Get one that is made specifically for whatever phone you have, they're sturdier than adjustable ones.

Yep, I had a holder but just putting it in the cupholder proved easier.
Not really sure what it's for originally, but I put it in the little space just behind the window switches (left of them in the picture)

My car has a GPS and satellite radio built in, so I don't use the phone for that.
Like Mark (93JC), I don't like to dick around with the phone when I'm driving. I don't even like to answer a call hands free. My concentration is on going as fast as possible. :evildude:

In a lot of cars there's a hole in the bottom of that, at least for the front seats. I have no idea why.

In this state, it's illegal to handle your phone at all while driving, be it for texting, calling, or using it as a GPS or music player. Unmarked Tahoes everywhere patrolling explicitly for ticketing people using cell phones while driving. I don't have a windshield or dash mount for it, so it stays tucked away.
I've never actually used the GPS feature on my phone. I generally look at and memorize the route I want to take before I leave, or pull over and check google maps if I get lost.
I don't use my phone as a music player ever. I'm not one of those people who needs to have music in their ears all the time, and so don't feel at all compelled to have music (and earbuds) on hand at all times. Mustang can play music off a thumb drive. I've got a few gigs of music on a memory stick in that car. The Mazda didn't have an Aux input, so I just relied on good old FM radio, a CD, or nothing. Jetta also doesn't have an Aux input, but it will play MP3s off of CD and has a 6 disc changer, so I've got some CDs loaded up with MP3s. Enough to not have to hear the same song twice in any given trip I'll take with it.
Yeah NYS will fuck you up if they even think you were using your phone
What a miserable place to live.
Ohio is super lax. If I'm at a standstill, I'll send texts or change music from my phone.
I think I like that air vent mount idea. Looks really clean.

Poked around the glove box and found nothing there. The head unit also doesn't have a button for for Aux; just AM/FM/CD. According to some posts I found in the VW boards, '07 was the first year for Aux inputs on the MkV.

I use the TomTom I keep in the car for in car navigation.
In the M-B I use the radio or plug an MP3 player into the aftermarket Jack I installed. I've used the in trunk changer twice. It's just too inconvenient tucked away back there.
The 6 does not have an aux input jack, but does have an in dash 6 disc changer. In town I usually listen to NPR on FM and on a trip, if we don't take the M-B, I take several CD's. I might mount an Aux input jack somewhere in the 6. The one I mounted in the M-B I got from Crutchfield and it works like a charm.

When I think about it; the lack of good OEM phone mounts is most likely a legal decision; as a good one that puts a phone where most people would want it would become another type of in-car video screen, and since there's no way to make sure people don't use it to watch youtube cat videos while merging onto the freeway...

I'm right now in a 2015 CR-V test car with a designated cellphone spot between the front seats. It works great for my phone, but Honda's development lead time was probably too much for it to realize that the jumbo "phablet" phones were about to explode in popularity -- my fiancee's OnePlus doesn't fit at all. Always the risk when carmakers try to accommodate the electronics world; gadgets change so fast.
In other cars, as other people have said, usually the cupholder or between my legs.
If I'm driving alone which is the majority of the time, on the passenger seat. I usually have my cell phone hooked up to a charger and an FM transmitter which I use to listen to audiobooks.
If I'm driving with a passenger in the front seat, I'll keep the phone in either the center armrest or center cupholder.
If I put my phone between my legs or on the passenger seat, it would fly off the seat and into the floorwell in like two minutes.

It doesn't block my view at all. I've positioned it in the center of the windscreen and even with my phone in it I am capable of seeing what goes on far right and ahead of the car. My seating position also helps.
