Title: thinking about changing my grill
Post by: veeman on August 22, 2017, 02:36:30 PM
Current.  I'm not a fan.  Options are: black sport mesh and plastidip... Thoughts?

2nd one looks the best imo, but why waste the $?

PlastiDip is like $7/can...that's what I'd do first.  If you still don't like it and feel like dropping dollars, go for that black sport mesh.

I would leave as is.

Welp, I don't like the current grill too much and I felt like changing it.

I think that's a good call.

Dip it. If you don't like it, it's easy to reverse. And super cheap.

I like the mesh.

Can't you just remove that horizontal bar?

I don't think so.  At least I haven't heard of anyone doing that on Subaru forums, but I haven't searched extensively.  People talk about how to replace the grille, whether to go aftermarket which saves money or not, whether to use plasti dip, and other cosmetic changes to go along with it like auxiliary lights.

So I did the plastidip.  Bought two spray cans.  First few sprays realized not nearly enough tape.  Luckily the paint splatter comes off pretty easily with elbow grease.  Ended up doing 5 coats with half hour in between coats.  Pain in the ass to get the tape off, without getting bits and pieces of what I wanted plastidipped off.  Where the tape was right next to the chrome, if I took the tape off, it would take off a bit of the plastidip on the chrome itself off.  Anyways...  I like the new look of it.  Up close, can easily tell it's a hatchet job but from several feet away, it looks pretty good.  I'll put a few more dabs of it on tomorrow to get the few small bits of chrome still showing.

Thanks!  There's a lot of black plasticky stuff elsewhere on the car around the wheel wells so I thought the chrome around the grill and fog lights looked off.  Like lipstick on a pig.

Looks good.

Next time, peel the tape off right after putting your final coat on. The plastidip won't flake off with the tape if it's still wet.

Good call.  That makes sense.  Thanks!
