Title: Mazda CX-30
Post by: 2o6 on March 05, 2019, 09:48:54 AM
Smaller than the CX-5

Bigger than the CX-3

Taller than the China-only CX-4.

Not sure why this isn't just called "CX-3". The CX-3 is tiny.

Look great. Hopefully the weight is somewhere between the CX-3 & CX-5 and the base motor is the 2.5L. If the vehicle is shorter than the 3 hatch I might bite.

3, 30, 5, 9 is an interesting way to count.

Jokes aside, are we sure that this isn't really intended to be a replacement for the current CX-3, even if they end up overlapping for a couple years? The name would make a lot more sense that way, assuming they'd also move to CX-50 and CX-90.

Maybe it's actually CX-3.0?

Why didn't they name it the CX-4 or CX-4.5 or something.

The CX-4 already exists.

China.

As to why? I'm not sure but according to the article it's more wagon-like.

Where?

Why?

1. Because Chinese people love Coupe CUV's

2. it's basically a Mazda 3 Crosstour.

3. It also probably should come to the US.

What is the point of this exactly?  Is it replacing something else in Mazda's North American lineup?  I'd put the CX-5 in the same size class as the Rav, CRV, and Escape and the CX-3 in the same class as the HR-V, EcoSport, and Trax.  Does it really make sense to have something in between those size classes?

I feel like it would make more sense to replace the CX-3 with this thing instead of selling them both.  Considering how tiny the CX-3 is, and this CX-30 getting a bigger engine, unless the CX-3 is way way cheaper there doesn't seem to be much of a reason to sell them both.

Price is the other factor.  There's only about a $4K difference between the starting prices of the CX-3 and CX-5.  Not a gaping wide window to drop a tweener into.  I feel like unless they plan to drop the CX-3 in favor of this, this will suffer the same fate as the Ford Contour.

Jeep moves the Renegade, Compass, and Cherokee just fine, and the pricing and sizing between those models is tight, and even tighter in the real world with incentives.

The CX-3 is near the end of it's life cycle, and although physically the same size as the Trax et al, it's got very bad interior packaging and no interior space. I also wouldn't be surprised if the CX-5 gets slightly bigger next generation.

A lot of people who buy Jeeps are buying the name.  "Jeep" is synonymous with SUV.  "Mazda" not so much.

I was wondering if this might be the overall strategy.  CX-30 replaces CX-3.  A CX-5 replacement, dubbed CX-50, comes out in a year or two that is perhaps a smidge larger than the current model to align better with the embiggened CRV and RAV.

Guys, guys, maybe they're going to make this CX-30 the CX-3 replacement, because the CX-3 is so small on the inside and is about due.

I wish Mazda would build a large car again. I realize it's not realistic, profitable, or anything, but I would love another Mazda9 at some point.
