Title: How fast do you go?
Post by: TheIntrepid on November 12, 2006, 09:56:39 AM
On average, how much over the limit do you drive?

I usually go 10-20 over depending on where I am... on highways where the limit's 100, I'm usually around 120-140.

And what's the fastest you've ever driven?
-231 in S550... 225 in Intrepid, 215 in Touareg, 189 in Grand Caravan

^^ Before you all assume I'm a lunatic, I only hit these speeds once to test out the cars after we got them...on Highway 407 [always empty] around 5:30-6:00am.

So what are your habits CarSpin?

Usually 5-15 mph over in good conditions, generally within 5 of the limit in the rain.

It depends upon conditions.

I stay at or near the speed limit in residential areas, usually 25-30 mph.

On main roads in commercial areas, I usually go 35-50 mph, depending upon the traffic and weather conditions.

On the highway, my typical speed, assuming conditions allow, is 80 mph.  I don't push much past 85 mph under any circumstances, though in extreme cases, I might hit 90 mph.  But under normal circumstances, I hover around 80 mph, and I take it down to 70 mph or so in heavier traffic.

Of course, if the weather is bad, all bets are off.  I try to never go faster than is safe for conditions, regardless of the speed limit.

In sum, I go the speed that seems safe, whether it's higher or lower than the speed limit (though of course, 90% of the time, it's higher than the speed limit).

10 under the limit, if my bike is in a good mood. no matter how i hold the throttle, it will always settle at 50-55 km/h.

on the same road, my dad goes 130-140km/h in the car speed limit being 60km/h

Yeah, 140mph in an Intrepid.  I believe it.  What's even more believable is 117 in a Grand Caravan.

It's electronically limited to 227;) (The Intrepid)...just so you know. The van was maxed out at that speed. Try searching for what the speed limiters are.

Right now no more than 5 over. But, once I get my car paid off I will probably revert to my Neon days of 10-15 over.

BTW Raza, C&D rated the 2001 Grand Caravan with the 3.8 with a top speed governed at 115, and it had a horsepower boost from 200 to 205 in 2004...so my 2006 that isn't any heavier (same design) with the 3.8L 205-hp engine is able to hit 117. The speed in the van was measured with the GPS on the Magellan RoadMate 800. It can't be off by more than 1.

Also, I did a quick Google and in KILOMETRES, the Intrepid 3.5 HO should be limited to 227.

At least 20 over. In Montana, I was nabbed for 95 in a 60 (In a Hyundai Sonata V6!!!). Luckily, I got caught after I hit 115

But, yeah, I have maxed out the TL (151-155 mph.) in an open road smack in the middle of the Arizona desert. It shook, and fidgeted like hell. I kept that speed for about 3 minutes, before i reverted back to my cruising speed of 110. I generally am a VERY fast driver, but I'm not a dumbass about it. I use the bluetooth in the TL, and don't talk too much on the cell when driving.

One thing I'll miss about the TL is the Bluetooth. I didn't want to pay for it in the Audi, so I'll need to buy a headset.

I don't know about the civilian intrepid but the police version witht eh 3.5H.O. would go about 136 so he's not that far off.  I know cuz I got stuck in one for about 3 months when it suddenly stopped running and the engine seaized.  I had no idea how that Dawn dish soap got into the crankcase.

I didn't know they put it in the Intrepid I thought it just went in the 300m or that fancy Chrysler car.? but it won't do 140 I can tell you that cuz I tried several times.

edit; but there is the chance your speedo was off.? If you are going 136 adn yo speedo is off by 3-4 you might see 140.? My radar told me a different story and that can't be off by more than the maximum of 3 and if it was at 3 we sent them in for testing at michigan state university to Dr. Lee who did all our testing for all radars in the state of michigan.

And unless your intrepid datona had mods it came from the factory with 239 horse not 267.   Not calling you a liar by any means just setting that info straight.

Intrepid came from factory with 250, same as 300M. The Daytona had a dealer-installed exhaust and an engine chip that gave it 267.

Actually my Intrepid speedo only goes up to 220. The Magellan RoadMate 800's "Locate" button gets your current vehicle speed along with Lat/Lon info which said I was doing 224km/h. I rounded to 225.

Plus seeing that it's illegal for dealers to alter car emissions I have a hard time believing the daytona thing because I also can't find that anywhere.? Again- not calling you a liar I just can't find any info on it and I've never heard of a Intrepid Daytona.?

No more than 5 over.  Sometimes 10 over if I'm actually in a hurry...which is very very rare.

30 MPH in 25 zones, 60 in 55 zones, 50 in 45 zones, etc.

HAHAHA Hwy 407, I use it rarely but still keep the transmitter. Whenever I drive on that road, I tend to go at 140-150KM/HR: and there's still some cars blasting past me still  But I've reduced that speed at least to 130 lately.

But daily driving, I tend to drive at 130KM/HR on the freeway (if it isn't busy of course) and 5-20KM over the speed limit on normal roads (if not busy of course).

Hmmm, I usually stay within 10 over on residential roads, sometimes under.  On the highway I'm usually 10-20 over depending on the road.  For some reason MA can't decide between 55 and 65 on the highways.
Title: Re: How fast do you go?

On 65 mph highways I run 70-75 mph.  Otherwise I typically run 5 over the limit.

10 over on major and arterial roads. 15-20 over on freeways, sometimes. 10-40 over on highways.

Depends on the weather of course. Crap weather and I might be doing 5-10 under.

I'm always doing 10-20 under on residential roads. Anyone who goes down, for instance my street, at anything more than 40 km/h (even though the limit is legally 50) is an idiot who will someday end up killing a kid.

Residential areas, I'm usually around 20-25 mph.  Things just happen too fast to react to if you are going faster.  On county roads I usually go 5 to 9 mph over.

If I'm on the highway in perfect weather and low traffic, I will go 10-15 mph over.  Crappy weather or congestion, I just keep up with the flow of traffic.

It depends where I am. If i know i'm in an area where cops patrol i'll only do 4-5 over but on back roads ill do as much as 30-40 over.

The fastest ive ever gone was 150 but it was windy and i was outrunning my headlights so i slowed down.

Completely depends on mood/conditions/situation.  On the way out to school, I didn't exceed 62.  Of course, I was towing a boat on a sketchy trailer with a small car.  On my last trip back, I went nearly 4 hours without letting my speed drop below 80.  I maxed the vehicle out (at 98 mph limited) a couple of times trying to hang with my 'rabbit' at the time.

It all depends on the thing I'm driving... Troopers don't like to cruise higher than 80 mph or so, so that's what I usually do in them. The Volvo didn't like to accelerate, but I managed 70-75 in it daily for a month. The old Jeep didn't get to see the highway, but the Miata would cruise from 70-90 + when on the highway. I usually try to keep it within 15 or so of the limit...

On my bike, though, I used to be able to do the 25 on flat ground no problem. Now I don't have a speedometer or really fast gears (heh, or any gears), but I can mostly keep up on flat ground, and pass traffic downtown (which is on a hill).

The speed limit, because I'd be crucified in Victoria for going 3km/h over the limit, and hung out for public humiliation for 6km/h or so over in South Oz.

The fastest speed at which I've personally driven is about 130km/h, and only when overtaking. I've been a passenger in a 1984 Mazda 626 that almost shook itself to pieces one night at 150km\h on Lonsdale Highway, and also broke the old ton (100mph) in a '65 Mustang down the Southern Expressway. Now that was glorious - such a beautiful noise.

Depends on the situation and the road. Typically 5-15 over.

I've gone fast enough to know what a lazy (or nonexistant) speed limiter is. Only did it once, though, on an empty stretch of I-65 at night. Run-Flats don't cooperate very well.

But still, in the 70 zones in Indiana, speed of traffic is 80 or above, I'll cruise between 85 and 95, occasional stints into the triple digits.

I recall that before I was riding with racers, I did a 33 mph sprint on my road bike, but I'm pretty sure I could match that now on a bike that could go that fast. Sadly, I never got past 44 mph on a downhill, but I can blame the low gears on my 1970s road bike and its somewhat rickety condition at the time.

My psersonal theory is that the speed limits should be adjusted by 20% for skilled drivers.? I follow the adjusted limit accordingly.

The fastest I've gone on the street in my Fairlane is somewhere north of 150mph (240kmh) and she's been clocked at 182.47mph (295kmh) on the track.   My Buell XB12S has reached its 140mph (225kmh) top speed on both the street and track.  My old Buell X1 also reached its top end on the street, IIRC that was about 135mph.  I also used to have a BMW 528xi but the fastest I've gone in that is only 110mph (176kmh)

BTW for anyone who has trouble converting units in their head just remember 1mph = 1.6kmh and 1kmh = 0.6mph, approximately.

But still, in the 70 zones in Indiana, speed of traffic is 80 or above, I'll cruise between 85 and 95, occasional stints into the triple digits.
Honestly?
It has more to do with the superior than thou attitude than it does with driving.  By the way Ill people are FIP's with a P -  for Pricks.
People from Indiana get the FIB's mark.  Sorry but most people from Chicago are arrogant asses who can't drive for shit.  During the summer almost all the wrecks we take on I-94 where I work have something to do with someone from Ill.  Not a personal slam just the way it is.  I think it has something to do with that attitude and only driving slowly most of the time in the entire chicagoland area.

On a 60km/h road, I won't do more than 80km/h. So usually at 70km/h and higher if traffic allows. I personally don't really enjoy weaving through traffic and my parents hate it so I try not to. Highways, I've been 50km/h over the limit when driving to PEI during the summer. Highways were practically empty

Residential/urban areas, speed limit or less.? Country roads with little or no chance of pedestrians or LEO's, I'll cruise along at a good clip, which could be 20 or so over.? Those are the best driving moments - a chance to excercize the gears and have a little fun.? :ohyeah:

Hiways in the past 10 years have become completely different.? When all cars generally sucked, 80 mph was considered a felonious and wild speed.? I remember driving my sister's brand new "sporty" 1986 T-Bird.? With it's pathetic engine and covered wagon suspension, I pegged the speedo at 85 a few times, but the car literally felt ready to either disintergrate or fly off the road.? Now, when lowly Corolla's and Saturns can easily cruise at 80, I find myself cruising in fairly heavy traffic at 80 -? 85, just keeping up with the left lane crowd.? I have a few favorite runs where I can readily pop up to 100 for a few glorious seconds.

And I think New Yorkers (at least in NYC) beat out Massholes for sociopath behavior on the road.? I find most NYC drivers exhibit a killer instinct and a nihilistic attitude regarding other humans.? Boston drivers are just stupid.?

I've done 130 in my SRT-4, 120 in my Civic, and nearly 120 on my GS750, but I generally try to keep it within 20mph of the limit to avoid that reckless driving charge should I get pulled over. And at night, I'm really just afraid of the deer, of which I've had numerous close calls.

Anywhere from 0 - 25 mph over on a normal day, depending on weather, I guess. If I'm tired, I'll probably hover closer to the limit. Also depends on what's on the radio.

Ron- you've got a real nice ride   I'm not back in Rhody yet (tomorrow!!!!!!!), I did this out on the Thruway.  A friend of mine got the car in May, I'd driven it around town but never put too many miles on it.  Got to drive all the way to Buffalo and back, about a hundred miles each way.  Cars like that remind me why I need to be successful...  I'm not used to driving such a fine piece of machinery; 135 sounds fast but in all honesty the car wasn't even remotely breathing hard.  It took virtually no time to reach that speed, and the brakes are so good it hauled back down very quickly.

One cool little feature, I don't know if this is common on luxury cars now?  When signalling to change lanes, just tapping the stalk makes the blinker flash three times, without needing to hold it down.  Cute...

I think there are about 4 roads where you can safely do 135 in the entire state of RI.

I keep it nice and slow on local roads; I'm not trying to run over any kiddies.  On intermediate roads I'll go 5-10 over.  On clear highways I'll cruise at 75.  Any more, and the Buick's steering looses any weight it once had and starts to shake a little.  An unexpected, slight curve at that speed will send me into a brief panic, and there goes a year off my life.  I did have it over 100 once or twice, but the speedo cuts off there so I don't know the exact speed.  Probably around 110.

Whatever is reasonable and prudent, given the conditions. So, in town I observe the limit, but on the open highway, during daytime and good weather, I drive somewhat faster than the posted limit.

Sorry, didn't see that before.

CJ has a rebuilt 428 Cobra Jet with custom-fabricated aluminum pistons and heads, ram-air fed Edelbrock carbs, custom-fabricated exhaust manifold, rebuilt 4mt with a 6" Titan Speed clutch, and an LSD.  Koni shocks on both ends, Eibach Coil-over springs in front and stiffened leafs in the back.  I can't remember exactly how the brake system got put together.  My uncle did all the work there.  I think it was basically ripped from a '96 Mustang with upgraded calipers and rotors.  It works great though.

I've raced her in a lot of drag timed laps and timed autocross.  And yes, if I change the gearing and take out the back seat and go flat out she pushes 180mph.  That's obvioulsy a little bit of work.  Not that I mind - I love playing with it - but it's sort of a hassle because I don't have my own garage and workspace.  Normally I can't get much past 160.

Quote(And no, it takes much, much more than a few tweaks, and none could do it stock.)
Yeah a few tweaks.  It's just a matter of gearing, really.  And I'd have to check but I'm pretty sure a few of the top-end muscle cars from back in the day could get into that territiry.  I know a 1969 Yenko Super Camaro could do 185mph, but that's obviously not stock.

The fastest muscle cars of the day without question were the winged Mopars (Super Bird, Daytona). Even with the most advantageous tall gearing and the most-powerful-of-its-day 426 Hemi option, those cars were good for up to about 160 mph. (To this 160 mph club I would add the 427 Cobra, but calling it a muscle car is stretch.) The next bracket down were the big block Corvettes. They could approach 150 mph, but again, only with the tallest of gearing. And when I mean tall gearing, I mean gearing that makes solid-lifter, high RPM cars of this flavor fairly gutless on the bottom-end, and to get pasted by most moderately-powered muscle cars of the day in the 1/4 mile.

The last picture I saw of your Fairlane showed a nice resto but with stock body work, 14" Cragar SSTs and a single carb on what appeared to be a run-of-the-mill FE (352/390) with stock exhaust manifolds. Just as a frame of reference for cars with a mid/late '60s Cd, stock cars of the 1960s, with 600hp to the street and mildly improved Cd versus their production counterparts, managed into the 180s. Only with the most powerful engine and profoundly more Cd-friendly body work did the winged Mopars move well into the 190s and finally hit 200mph. Forgetting the profound body, chassis, suspension and brake upgrades necessary to make such a vehicle as a '68 Fairlane even remotely safe at those speeds, you'd need to be putting about 600hp to the street to hit 182mph. Without the simply addition of the substantial downforce-producing body work (front air dam, small rear spoiler), even with 600hp and 2.73 gears, there's virtually zero chance a stock-bodied Fairlane would hold the road long enough to hit 182 mph.

I'm not sure when this was taken.  I know it was before we (my uncle and I) put the CJ in it.  That was in 1998.  I thought that was the 302 in there but we had put a lot of spare parts into the engine to get into running order.  I suppose it might have actually been a 352, to be honest I don't remember.  I wasn't doing too much engine work at that point but I'm pretty sure it was originally a 352.  I suppose its possible that my uncle just dropped something else in there and I either forgot or he didn't tell me.

Anyway I don't know how much experience you have with modifiying and racing classic muscle cars but I politely suggest you put down the graphing calculator and get behind the wheel of something scary like my monster.

Minimum of 5 over provided it's not terrible weather, and then depending on traffic, there's not a real limit to how much over I'll go (I generally go with the flow of the quickest traffic).

Minimum of 5 over provided it's not terrible weather, and then depending on traffic, there's not a real limit to how much over I'll go (I generally go with the flow of the quickest traffic).

You've got a dangerous mentality, my friend.  I know, because I have the same one.

Residential I do 25-28mph even though it pissed people off for going so slow.  Sorry but little kids are more important than their convenience.

City streets no faster that 5mph.  Too congested to open up.

Interstate I'll go with the flow of traffic in the particular lane I'm in and if I don't want to drive that fast, I'll move right to let faster traffic go by.

Open roads...especially ones I know are rarely travelled...as fast as I can just on the brink of loosing traction or until my tires melt...140+ on interstantes/hwys between cities with no traffic or mountain roads...30+ over...but that's only once a month or so.

Break in period is such a bittersweet time!  All the excitement of getting a new performance car tempered by the reality of driving like a old fart.  :banghead:

I was cruising on Rt 3 in Catman's town this afternoon at a sort of high speed when what to my wondering eyes did appear but a County Sheriff Expedition with markings and full light bar merging in front of me.  It seems to take forever to haul your car down from ooohhhhh, say 100 mph when you're closing in fast on an LEO!  I'm pretty sure Sheriffs don't ticket, but I'm also pretty sure I don't want to find out! Damn A4 throttle keeps getting sucked to the floor - I'm gonna have to get that checked out.

if you say so.

I asume you're talking about this picture:

I'm not sure when this was taken.? I know it was before we (my uncle and I) put the CJ in it.? That was in 1998.? I thought that was the 302 in there but we had put a lot of spare parts into the engine to get into running order.? I suppose it might have actually been a 352, to be honest I don't remember.? I wasn't doing too much engine work at that point but I'm pretty sure it was originally a 352.? I suppose its possible that my uncle just dropped something else in there and I either forgot or he didn't tell me.

Anyway I don't know how much experience you have with modifiying and racing classic muscle cars but I politely suggest you put down the graphing calculator and get behind the wheel of something scary like my monster.

I've had two somewhat fast muscle cars. The first was a '79 Camaro with a fairly hot 350/TH400 combo.  The second was a '72 Dodge Demon (picture a '72 Duster with some front-to-rear black stripes, a black hood, and various cartoon demon decals) with a mild 360 (tarted up like a 340)/TF727 combo. Were they as scary as a big-block powered intermediate Ford? Probably not. But of course owning such vehicles gives passage to a community in which others own such vehicles so riding and driving in like animals isn't uncommon; I remember built 5L Fox body Mustangs, a Dodge Dart 340, a Nova or two; and as luck would have it I went to school with a guy who had a '70 Mach1 with a 428CJ (original, too). Those days are about 10 years past, though...

Whist I do my best to put down my HP 48SX, I'd be interested in seeing the at-present configuration with the 428CJ, aluminum heads, ram-air fed Edelbrock carbs, and custom fabricated exhaust manifold. I'm also interested as to how a 302 and 352 can be confused as they are 100% different animals; from engine block, to bellhousing, to crank, to pistions, to heads, to intake and exhaust manifolds, to engine mounts, and just about everything else that would need to replaced/rebuilt to get such a thing in running order. And not to mention, size. The FE block is substantially larger.

And I have to admit, a 6" clutch sounds small for a V8-powered vehicle; especially one with 480hp.

I don't have much experience with Illinois drivers, but Minnesotans are pretty horrible ( though, in all fairness, it's likely that a lot of bad drivers with Minnesota plates that I encounter are native Omaha transplants visiting the old folks).

When I used to drive my kid up to Iowa State, the damn Minnesotans would pass me on the shoulder of I-35, despite my doing the limit in the slow lane and their having an open left lane to safely pass me in. They would then cut me off short and slow way down, presumably to "teach me a lesson" somehow.

If you're really in so much of a hurry that you'd do a dangerous illegal pass, do you have time to "teach" the passee a "lesson"? What I learned was that any asshole with the license fee can get a Minnesota license.

Minnesotans are terrible in the Black Hills on vacation. They want to take Arrmored Personnel Carrier-sized SUVs up gravel roads marked "oversized vehicles prohibited"--and want to do so with pedal as close to the metal as possible.

On touristy paved roads like Needles Highway they ride your bumper and flip you off for enjoying the scenery as the roads' designers intended you do.

Minnesotans should just stay home and watch Tourism Department videos of the Black Hills.
They expect I-35 straight from Rapid to Rushmore and are damned pissed when they don't get it.

Ron, I think you need to get a medical checkup instead.  You have a sure case of disorderus rightus footus.  I don't think there's a surgical cure for it, other than amputation of the right foot, which is undesirable in all but the most extreme cases.  But the good news is that it can be controlled with medication....

Sheriffs around here only serve warrants and do bomb squad duty. I met alot of them at an '04 Bush rally I worked at where Jenna and Barbara were the guests.  The bomb-sniffing dog spent most of the time licking me, however.

They seemed pretty cool.  I suppose if you're tearing it up, they will radio to the regular PD, though.

My record on the DC beltway is 85mph (zoned 55, usually bad traffic) and that was in the '99.
Generally I don't do more than 5mph over on residential/rural roads and 10mph on highways.

A few pages back talking about minivans, my '92 isn't limited but the speedo stops at 100mph.  It still has quite a bit more than that.   :ohyeah:
A friend with a 97ish Dodge minivan maxed it in Germany but when the limiter kicks in it doesn't allow fuel flow again until you're down to 100mph or so.  Scary when traffic is right behind you and you think you had a breakdown...   :nono:

My wife had a speed limit of 90mph in the SHO, if she wasn't in the car I'd drive 120-125mph in the no speed limit zones.  I hit the end of the speedo (140mph) a few times, just to do it.  Wastes gas though.

Otherwise I usually don't go that fast maybe 8 over whatever the limit is about 25-40% of the time the rest of the time I go about the limit.

You can have them in cars in Michigan now without permits- brilliant decision by the Michigan State Police. :banghead:  Nothing like giving bad guys complete LEGAL knowledge of how long they have before you get there.  But mine wasn't a scanner it was the real thing from work- supervisors have take homes now and we're supposed to be equipped 24/7 due to GO's.

Right but if we stopped you in possession of one before and we knew crime was afoot and didn't have enough evidence on the actual crime- we could hold you based on teh scanner and "use of an electronic listening devise designed to operate with established police frequencies during the commission of a crime."? Now we just have one less crime fighting tool to protect our citizenry.? And its hurting anti-crime efforts across the state.? Bank robbers ARE using them and so are the smash and grab guys hitting gas stations and stores all over the state.? And it's legal for them to do it.? Before using one during a crime was a felony and they didn't because it was jsut one more felony to add on.

Boat engines too.  You don't keep it at redline (in a boat, known as "WOT," for "wide open throttle"), but you occasionally have to go up to about 6K RPMs to seat the rings properly.

Sorta off topic, but I redlined the beast below for the first time in its life this christmas break. Previously, I'd only brought it to 5500, but I took it to 6250 on a stretch of empty, country road through first, second, and almost all the way in third. It was fun, but not something I'm going to do very often.

On topic, I usually drive 5-10 over in Wyoming, 10-20 over in PHX, and occasionaly just let it fly. To do that, the set of given circumstances must be very good.

Title: Re: How fast do you go?
Post by: Tave on December 29, 2006, 09:07:53 AM
The speedo goes to 120, but it's a little fast. I'm around 80 maxed in third, so 120 doesn't seem too unreasonable, especially since 5th is an overdrive. It would take me a hell of a long time to get there (although it's supposed to be a slippery car). Right now I still have the tires that came with the car, and I have no confidence in them. They're called "Optimo H420." I've hit 100 a few times in 4th and 5th just to hit it, but I've always backed off quickly afterwards. Once I put real tires on I might consider a high-speed run. Hopefully the car won't have already shaken herself loose by then.
