Did you read the review Car Zeus?
"The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has the best fit and finish of all the cars we tested here."
I'll take the Audi. The Benz is cool, but I've never grown to like its styling.
I'm surprised at Lexus being last, I think we'll need to see a few more reviews before we can take that seriously. The LS looks pretty good.
None of these cars are that good looking though, to me at least. The S-Class just doesn't do it for me. If I had that amount of money, I wouldn't get any of these except maybe the Jag. Anyone else feel the same?
Hey Guys!
Our city newspaper The Toronto Star just released their top choice for this segment...Audi S8

Same here, it's the ugliest of the group.
Maybe they'll restyle the S550 interior; besides the price, it's the biggest thing wrong with the car. The center cover for the display screen still looks tacked-on.
The S-Class isn't as ugly as some of you might think. Design is subjective, but I personally love it. And I thought it was butt-ugly when I first saw the pictures of the new S-Class. :praise:

Damn, ugly profile, ugly fenders, ugly bumpers, ugly wheels. Nothing not ugly. Look inside...ugly. :P
That's about where I'd rank them if I was, for example, making an addition and I get to keep my car. Otherwise I'd want the Jag.
The W220 is a lot better looking IMO, but I like the W221 a lot. The interior design could be a lot better IMO, but I've warmed up to it and it obviously is very very HQ. I can't believe they called its handling "amazing" too.
The best thing is the Lexus being last - and its the newest of these.

The S owns you all.
I am glad to see the Audi is still going strong!
It would have been interesting to see the Quattroporte thrown in there.
It also looks awful from the rear 3/4 view, IMO. Look at the size of those wheel arch flares!

The benz looks ugly but I like the Audi and love the Jag.
The Benz is far from ugly its just not up the standards that previous S-classes have set.
I don't know, I'd say the taillights are pretty ugly.
I saw two new S classes going down the road one behind the other and the thing that struck me at that moment was that it has presence. It's an ugly piece, but still unignorable

Oh, and in terms of looks, I would pick the top 3 as follows:
1. A8
2. 750Li (I liked the 745's exterior more)
3. S550
(Sorry for trolling, but I had to.)
I don't get it. The Jag placed in 4th because it lagged in 2nd gear starts (that's why there's a first gear), and it's not wide enough?
They didn't say anything about the handling.
Car and Driver still sucks, even though I'm happy the LS finished last.

The Jag got screwed. I mean, I have my gripes with the Super V8 (terrible ambient lighting, cheap plastic on the door sills, and a few other things) But my god other than that it is SUCH a good car. It performs just as good in the corners as the S-550 (which is really as good as they say) but it dosen't feel as big, and drives with a feel of fluidity and grace that none of the cars can match.
If I ever hit the lottery, I'm going to buy a Super V8, or perhaps I'll wait a few years, and pick up a Portfolio that so wrongly lost so much of its value.
I've driven every car on that list save for the LS (which I hope to drive within the week) The S rightly finished first, the Jag should have finished second, with the A8 coming in third, the BMW trailing in 4th, and given what I've heard about the dynamics on the LS...dead...freaking...last.
BTW, this is sick. :praise:

Well If I can find a Super V8 at cost then I'd go with that.
The XJ is one of the few cars that I find looks better in LWB form.
But a portfolio would be my choice.
Interesting read, but a bit misleading. They title it a chauffer car comparison, but rank the car they say is one of the best to be driven in as last place. In typical C&D fashion, they've titled and implied one thing, and proceeded to test the cars as they normally would in a drivers comparison. Oh well, still a good read, and as far as driving the cars, a pretty fair ranking.

I'd be almost 100% sure that they just liked the sound of "Chauffer Showdown", and no more.
Having ignored the rubbish C&D 'Gotta Have It' factor, the Audi wins 197 to 193.
I guess I'm failing to see why a car (S-class) for which "amazing handling" -- amazing, mind you, is cited as one of its strengths, comes in a tie for third in the handling column and in second to last for the entire chassis category.

The LS should finish last based on braking alone, over 200 ft from 60 both times they tested it. Most modern suvs and trucks do better than that!

In America it's appraised for not dusting the wheels. Look how people in the other threads complain about German cars having brakes that make your wheels dirty. I prefer brakes that brake and couldn't care less about the wheels.
The GS failed miserably on the Grossglockner mountain brake test in AMS. I don't feel save in a Lexus on the Autobahn. Period.
The only reason the test average was 180 was because of the Lexus's atrocious performance, only one other car took more than 180 feet to stop (the Benz, 182 ft). Without the Lexus the average would've been 173 feet. That is just sad.

Hmm...I thought the breaks were good in the S...but then again I didn't drive it hard.
They aren't best in class anyway.
I would really have a tough time choosing between a Jaguar Super V8, a Benz S550, and BMW 750Li. So Instead of agonizing I would withdraw another $20 grand and get a Maserati Quattroporte.

The RL's a very crappy seller. I don't blame the prospective buyers though... who'd buy an RL over a 530xi, M35x, GS300AWD, and the likes?
I'd recommend it over the GS without a second thought. Lexus's latest cars have all turned out surprisingly poorly (though the LS460 may have just gotten a bad first review).

Okay. The GS I'll give you. What about the M35x or the 530xi? Of course most people will bash the 530 because of its styling and iDrive, but it's really a fantastic car.
Even the Passat 3.6 4MOTION is a decent competitor in that class.. isn't it?

It's odd for them. They've got nice engines, and nice interiors (though I'm not wild about some of their new design cues), but suffer from numbing handling and over-instrusive traction systems.
I don't like the RL just as much as anyone here.
I had this question though: RL faired poorly when pitted against M35 RWD. How did it fair against the M35X? 530Xi?
I can't recall.

Not in that class. It's been argued in the 3-Series/C-Class/G35 class, but not the 5-Series/E-Class/M35.

The GS300, GS430, and IS250 engines are nothing special. There's no steering feel, but the rides aren't as comfortable as the unfun competition (or even some of the better-handling cars) and interior packaging is dreadful. The GS is getting its new engines, but there's still no wow-factor in either the GS or IS to offset their deficiencies.
Hopefully they did a better job on the LS460 than those, and than the C/D review suggested.
I had been waiting to see how the LS460L compares to the S550, 750li and A8 L. Just as I had expected after the intial reviews the LS460L was the least performance oriented car despite having more horse power and extra gears.
Iam glad to see that BMW 750li is still the performance king and MB S550 is a hella of car by Benz. Lot of haters said nah the new LS460L will beat the 750li and MB S550 in performance. LOL.....may be next time...after all dreams do come true :P.
Out of this group I would take 7 series... LOL....no shocker here since I have one parked in my garage. The next up would be S class for me.
Go east go west BMW 7 series is the best  .......sorry guys had to troll a bit for my ride

The European press slams the IS250 for being "underpowered" and "fuel inefficient". The brakes are terrible too I hear. I thought the GS430's V8 was silky smooth and quiet? Or are you talking about a performance POV?
Right, but pretty much every V8 in that class is silky smooth and quiet. It offers nothing special, and many of the others are more powerful as well.
