Title: Worst Accidents
Post by: TheIntrepid on January 02, 2007, 08:45:45 AM
So SPINners... what's the worst accident you've gotten into in all your years of driving?

I've only been driving for about 2 years so I've only had one accident. I was stopped at a red light, right beside where a right-turn lane was opening. A white Dodge Avenger is behind me, flickers his lights to request me to move up a bit so he could squeeze into the right-turn lane. I move up a bit, he tries to be a smartass and floors it into the right-turn lane, nudging my back bumper hard enough to push me into the Mazda MPV van in front of me.

I immediately put on my hazards and put the car out of gear... as did the Mazda. The Mexican guy in the Mazda gets out, walks past me to the f*ck punk kid in the Avenger and starts bitching at him. After getting all his information, he walks up to me, says "are you okay son?" When I said "yes thank you".. he gets in and drives off.

Damage:
Front license plate bracket cracked [The thing's worth like $9 so I haven't bothered to fix it]
Rear bumper cracked [replaced]

Ho boy...
ok...
The worst. I was 19 years old and I had a 1967 Mustang soft top.
I was headed westbound on a 4 lane road approching the green light. I noticed a motorcycle cop approching the same intersection but headed towards me in the eastbound lane. Suddenly I see him nail the brakes and start to get a bit sideways. I was in the intersection when I got HAMMERED on the drivers side just behind the door. It was an early 80s For Bronco. (full size). The impact spun me in a NW direction with him still pushing me. I hit the curm on the NW corner sideways and it brought me over on my roof. He ran over the back of my now upside worn car and slammed into a utility box.
The funny thing was, after my car stopped, I can remember very calmly reaching over and turning off my radio. I unbuckled my lap belt and fell onto my roof. I was still pretty calm until I smelled smoke. It was only oil smoking off the engine but I didn't know that.
PANIC!!!
I tried to punch my way out the windshield when the motorcycle cop (the one that almost got hit by the same truck) grabbed my feet and pulled me out of the passanger side window.
He asked if I was ok and I told him yes.
He then walked over to the Bronco as the driver was trying to get it restarted. He grapped the guy by either the head or the face and dragged him out of the window. Cuffed him and sat him down next to another car.
My worst injury was some scratches from being dragged from my car and muscle soreness the next day.
The Mustang was destroyed.

pfft those stories are pathetic. here's one of mine, i've got plenty more(i've been criving for two years):
i dropped my sister to school one morning(i dont know why, it is a five minute walk) as i was comming back, there was a guy on the side of the road who looked like he wanted to cross so i slowed down, the guy signals me to go continue so i give it some gas to try to get past him. he walked onto the road just as i was nearing him and i managed to brake enough that he doesnt get really hurt, i got a bruised ankle and a bruised knee along with a lot of road rash he didnt have any visible injuries. a crowd soon gathered(in india it is always assumed that the fault is of the person with the bigger vehicle) that would have been a nasty situation to be in if it hadnt been for the few witnesses who came to my defence. my bike had a broken side mirror and a bent guart that i still did not fix.

I was on a major freeway in stop-n-go traffic. As is typical here, the HOV lane (far leftlane) was empty, while the other four lanes where stop-n-go. As luck would have it, I had a passenger with me. I had just gotten onto the freeway, and it took me about 10 minutes to get over to the lane next to the HOV lane.

By the time I was ready to merge, it was dusk, rainy, and on a curve. I was pretty high up (Dodge Ramcharger) and tried for a little while to confirm that the lane was clear. Sure enough, I think the coast is clear, and I just get my front end into the HOV lane, and wham! A Taurus at 60mph hits me on the left front corner; left fender, wheel and bumper take the brunt. He bounces of me and ricochets off the median barrier and then off a couple more cars in front of me. I am pushed into the car in front of me which causes a chain reaction reaching two cars in front.

There's no left hand shoulder on this freeway, so now we have five or so cars stopped in the two left hand lanes trying to figure out what to do. Oh, and to greatly complicate the situation, the driver of the Taurus didn't speak English. A few people passing the scene yelled various insults as to additional traffic problems. State Patrol shows up after a while, and they stop all five lanes of traffic to let involved parties limp to the far right of the freeway where there is a shoulder. What a mess that was.

Luckily, everyone was okay. It was also luck I was driving a slow vehicle at the time. If I was able to get into the HOV lane further, and had the Taurus hit me square in the rear, it would have been a serious accident. Or had it been a bus rather it would have also been a problem. They are now starting to segregate the HOV lanes as this scenario is a common one. Having traffic moving at freeway speeds right next to stop-n-go traffic is a recipe for disaster. Big problems also arise from people getting out of the HOV lane to hit an exit (as most are on right hand side) as some will hit the brakes hard to try to catch a gap in the stop-n-go traffic.

The worst accident I've been in really wasn't that bad....

Well, this one day I drove my '79 LeMans (wit a tree-fiddy!) to the DMV. I waited for the minimum required time of 20 minutes before making it to the counter, only to find out I had to go downtown to the tax office to pay some property tax which I was supposed to be exempt from. I came out of there all kinds of pissed off because it was going on 4:30pm and there was no way I was going to be able to make it downtown (so they could tell me I'm exempt from the tax) and be back to the DMV by 5.

I really don't get angry very often, so when I do, I kinda lose it. As I was pulling out of the DMV parking lot onto the road, I had the uncontrollable urge to just plant my right foot. So the rear end of the car swung out 180 degrees, pointing me right into the ditch adjacent to the main road (looking back on it, one of my rear tires was in a small puddle, which caused the unexpected snap oversteer). Since I already had some momentum built up, I figured I might as well keep on the throttle and see if I can jump it, and if not, I might get to feel what an actual collision might be like at about 15mph. It was a $500 car anyway.

So the front end of the car hit the opposite side of the ditch, and the rear bumper got stuck on the other side. I got out, sat on the trunk and had a cigarette, waving at people who slowed down to check out my predicament, watching cop cars pass by like I'm not even there. So I walked into the DMV and used their payphone to call a tow truck to drag me out. No real damage to the car either.

That's not even as interesting as the time I drove that car over a washer and dryer... except that was on purpose because I was a little drunk.

Other than that, I've had close calls, but so far I've managed to avoid real accidents.

When I was in 5th grade I was on a roadtrip with my mom and we rolled our Sunbird 2 and a half times on the interstate. Thank god for seatbelts.

The only accident I've been responsible for happened a couple months after I got my license. I volunteered to help with a Hershey tack meet, and as I was pulling into my parking spot, I misjudged how much room I had and bumped into a green minivan. I put a fist-sized dent in it's right rear flank.

Interstingly enough, after the accident, I became friends with the girl whose car I ran into. If it wasn't for the mishap, I never would of had a reason to talk to her.

I've never been in a really serious accident.  The closest I came was in the summer of 1970.

I'm driving a 66 Dodge Charger eastbound on I44 at about 70 MPH.  I move to the left lane to pass a car doing about 65 MPH as we are side by side the car I'm passing just slides into my lane and we touch side to side.  I stay in my lane while he overcorrects, leaves the road on the right, flies up an embankment and overturns.  I pull over to the shoulder while several drivers who saw the accident stop to see if they can render aid.  Soon a Missouri Highway Patrolman stops.   Amazingly no one is injured.  The right side of my car is flattened as if I took a steam iron to it.  The other car is totaled.  The driver was ticketed and he and his two passengers were taken into custody.  Just that morning the driver had gone to Oklahoma to pick up his two friends who had just finished serving their time at the OK State Pen.  All were drunk when he hit me.

She was going to school at either George Washington or Georgetown in DC. I partied with her and her boyfriend and another couple last New Year's Eve. It was a fun time.

I was in a head-on collision when I was 12 which was pretty bad.  The worst one I had where I was the driver was when I was 1 week away from my 17th birthday and I rolled my parents' Ford Explorer at 100 km/h (62 mph).  That was really bad.

Yes. I've been very busy, and the one that was about to go up was delayed by the sooner-than-expected introduction of the Versa sedan. Next will either be economy sedans or inexpensive family sedans, and hopefully within a week or two.

In a previous life I was a lumberjack. I saw a utility pole one day, thought to myself, "boy, that son of a bitch sure looks juicy", chopped it down with my Mazda. $9,800 later that bastard was still standing and I had a new radiator. To this day I keep a change of underwear in the trunk.  Sure was an expensive radiator.

absolutely correct, there are some days when it seems everyone is out to get you.
i had a really close call today. i was comming out of a small two lane road to another wider road and there is a 90 degree turn onto the main road. there was a car comming from the opposite side with enough distance for me to get in so i braked for the turn when my front wheel locked sending me sliding towards the car luckily, i let of the brake and used the back brake. at that speed, nothing major would have happened but it would have been a PITA(literally).

Ahahaha

I always look around when I'm driving to see if any hot chicks are out. Right now I'm picturing seeing one, taking a deep breath, gripping the wheel tightly, and then BAM! Then jumping out of the car, "I'm so sorry. Are you all right. Is there anyway I can make it up to you? We better exchange phone numbers."

Can't you just imagine that conversation:

-Hello, is Kate there?

-This is her.

-Hi Kate, this is Tim, I was wondering I'f you'd like to get together sometime this weekend?

-Tim? Tim who? I don't know any Tim.

-Oh, you know, we met a couple weeks ago...

-Um...

-On seventeenth and Broadway

-What?...oh yeah, do you need some information for you insurance?

-Um, no. I just thought we might hook up, you know, grap a cup of coffee...Hello?...Kate? Are you there?

I was 17, heading north on I-294 in my A4. I was changing lanes but I checked my blindspot too late and cut back. I was an inexperienced driver and swerved too fast out of control and started spinning - bad tires didn't help either. It's a miracle I didn't hit anyone else. I slammed into the median. The airbags didn't go off and I wasn't hurt, but the car was a different story. The engine had shifted, and eventually, nearly everything forward of the front axle was replaced. The car was nearly totalled. I got it back and it served me well until the 3er arrived. I haven't even been pulled over yet in the 3er, and the biggest 'accident' is a dent someone left on my passenger door.  :banghead:

Mazda6er is a Lumberjack, I'm a, um, metalsmith??

In Germany my SHO had been undriven due to a bad clutch for many moons. (It had broken, we went to vacation in the US, then I went to Army school for a month, then saved money for a clutch kit.)
A friend loaned me a 1987 3-series for a few weeks, and the day I went to pick up the last nuts&bolts I needed for the job it was raining.

I was driving too fast in the rain in an unfamiliar car (almost all mine have been fwd,) and slid around a corner, over-corrected, and had a head-on altercation with a lightpole.  I remember panicking when I couldn't see (glasses had fallen to the floor between my legs,) and the hazard lights weren't working, it was a fairly busy road.  So I grabbed my glasses, jumped out, rushed to the trunk to get the warning triangle, it was locked.  Rushed back to get the keys, unlocked, ran down the road with the triangle.  As I walk back to the car the front is trashed, there are fluids everywhere...

The friend ended up getting a couple hundred more than they paid for the car (510,000 kms on a 14yr old car was "low mileage" to the insurance people,) and bought a newer used 5-series. (They later let me borrow it a few days because they needed to borrow my minivan...)  I am still paying high rates..  :banghead:

Worst I have ever caused:  I actually backed into a parked car in a parking lot at an ice cream parlor at less than 5 mph.  I went there to visit one of the hottest girls I've ever met over summer last year.  She's 3 years younger than me  :frown:, but it was a worthwhile thing to try and visit.  Absolute hottie.  When I was backing out, I looked into my side mirrors but forgot about the rearview mirror and my back bumper met a 1995 Accord that was already pretty dinged up.  Any chance I had with this girl was blown, because I had to wait for the owner to come out and see if I created any new damage.  I made a scene, unfortunately, and I still regret it.  :banghead:

As for ones I was in that I didn't create, over winter break, I was driving my mom's Venture to Wal-Mart and I came to a very cautious stop because it was raining and I hadn't driven that thing for a while.  Anyway, this bitch on her cell phone rear ended me.  She scratched the paint, but she also was very unapologetic, and I was having a bad night.  I was going to go off on her, seeing her car looked like it was in a demolition derby with all of her prior mishaps, but some guy came over and almost forced me to calm down.  I don't believe in hitting anyone, much less women, but I wanted to beat the shit out of her.

So none of my "accidents" really ever amounted to anything.  As for ones I've been in where I wasn't behind the wheel, that's a different story.

My only two accidents were the same thing, with the same person in the car.

I was on a left hand turn in the rain and the back swung around. The first accident totaled my Maxima a month after I got it, the second one took the front bumper off my Accord. The moral of my story is, don't waste any time to get good tires!!! My Maxima's front right tire was on the way out... when it went, I happened to be out in the rain!!! And the rear tires on my Accord were almost bald. :(

After 25 years of driving, I've had only 2 accidents.  One minor one when a clapped out Toyota pulled out of a parallel parking space and made an illegal U-turn across 3 lanes of traffic right in front of me without even pretending to look over his shoulder.  I had a 10" granite curb on the island to my left, and no chance to miss the dumbass.  Locked up the brakes and shredded his car from the front driver's door to the front bumper.  My beloved 86 Audi GT Coupe got only minor damage to the passenger side - fender, bumper, headlight.  Without a witness who backed me up, my useless insurance company would have called it a 50-50 accident because I didn't have a police report.  The other guy claimed he was waiting to make a left turn and I hit him from behind. The fact that there was no legal left turn, plus a 10"  island that I would have needed to be driving on, plus I hit him in the front of the side of his car didn't impress my insurance company.  :banghead:

Other accident was when I was....uhhhhhh......attacked by a bee.  I took my 97 Expedition at around 40 mph right thru a 9" diameter telephone pole as I bravely decided to swat the bee off the windshield on the passenger side.   I lunged to the right and basically took the steering wheel with me.  It was beyond a doubt the stupidest thing I've ever done.  Thank God it was on a quiet country road and I didn't kill anybody. After the crash, I noticed I couldn't see out of the windshield since the hood was "A-framed" in half, and when I looked in the sideview mirror, I could see the top 2/3 of the telephone pole literally bouncing from the wires swinging across the road, like a giant marionette. $10,000 to fix the Ford, $2,000 or so for the utility company.  As for the impact, it felt like I hit a giant speed bump.  I had my seatbelt on and felt a definite surge, my briefcase went flying (along with everything else in the car - keep loose stuff secure!  There's a good chance it will smack you in the back of the head in an accident!), but that was about it.  All in all a very lucky unlucky event.

I backed the Ranger into a tree in our driveway while I was in a hurry. We have a lot of trees (woods really) on our property, so it was bound to happen. I'm just glad it wasn't the Z or Focus.

The thick steel bumper was bent in and the whole side of the box had a barely noticeable kink in it about 1/3 of the way towards the front. Honestly, the truck was so ugly and damaged as it was, that it didn't really affect the appearance.

No big deal. Insurance was not involved. Never bothered me. I don't even really consider it an "accident".

Had an interesting bee experience on a motorcycle. Picked up my brand new Ducati Supersport on a beautiful sunny day. Of course I headed straight for the hills and some twisty roads. I was having a fantastic time until a bee hit me in the neck and somehow went down from there under my leather jacket. The bloody thing wasn't real happy with this turn of events and proceeded to let me know about it. Ouch! Try completing a pretty serious turn at speed while being stung by a bee under your shirt. I had no idea what was going on of course but it was pretty much the quickest I've ever stopped a bike and taken my jacket off.

Damn!  That would have been bad considering my state of mind at the time.  I'd have likely put the bike down and tried to squash the bee by rolling on the pavement at 60 mph!   Nice job keeping a level head!

I didn't know what was in there at the time. I was madly thumping at my chest with one hand while braking. Trust me, the reason I didn't drop the bike had more to do with luck than anything else.

I had a spider on my radio once.  I freaked out.  If I'd had a gun, I'd have emptied the clip killing that thing.  Didn't crash, but I did speed up 10mph and then drop speed by 30 until I killed the little bastard and flung him out of my window.  Lucky I keep tissues in the car.

I was hit by a mongo in the parking lot of Discount tire, leaving a dent in my passenger door, but the cowardly tard ran away.  The next day I was pissed off on a run for Dominos and scraped the side of my car on a covered parking space pole, which didn't help my mood any.  And I backed a customer's Quest minivan into a light post.  Didn't see it because the backdrop was a forest, and it blended right in with the trees until the last second when I said "Oh Shit!" and felt it hit.  No big deal, had to repaint the bumper that's all.

I've been hit 9 times in 17 years of driving. And all of them have been other people hitting me. The big one was this old man was coming out of out local church and pulled right out in front of me. I had no place to go because there was a massive ditch on the right and him on the left. He went from the front bumper all the way to the back one on my 1987 B2000 pickup truck. He was in some old big American Cadillac brick looking thing. The guy kept going down the road and didn't know he hit me! When he found out what happened he pissed his pants so I kind of felt bad for him after that. Screwed up my truck big time.

Kinda.  A friend of mine told me if I went fast enough I could get some air off a cattleguard.  He meant 70 km/h, but he didn't tell me that.  I was in the air for 43 ft. (as measured by the RCMP) and as soon as I landed I was already at the corner with no time to even steer.  I went off the end of the corner, hit the embankment, went airborne again for another 27 ft where I landed on the roof of the truck half in and half out of the ditch.  I rolled over two more times before coming to a rest on the tires 6 ft from the edge of the road.  The edge of the road was the top of a 30 ft drop.

Nice!? And you walked away??? That does say something for the Explorer!? I imagine you had your seatbelt on, because a 16 yr old driver a few miles from here did the same basic move in an Explorer but got ejected.? He didn't have a 17th b-day.  :(  I live on a dirt road, and we've had 3 rollovers and 2 T-bones of trees right in front of our house in the past 8 years.  Every one of them piloted by 16 or 17 yr olds.  Seems that it takes a while to learn that dirt road driving dynamics dictate longer stopping distances!

Haven't wrecked any cars. Spun off a snow covered road at 2am while doing 110km/h on some hick road (limit 50km/h)in the middle of nowhere. I recall coming up to the corner, felt the rear end start to step out, realized I was screwed, briefly saw the trees through my windshield (car was perpindicular to road at that point) and slid into a field. This field was the only stretch where there was no ditch or trees along this road too. So, after coming to a stop after 400' of skidding about 100' from the road, I put it into reverse and backed onto the road.

This was when I was 17. I wasn't exactly at my intellectual peak during these years.

I climbed out and cut my hand on some glass.  I then ran 2.5 kms to the nearest house and called my parents.  They both cried and hugged me.  The police didn't press charges either because both my parents and the cops believed that I learned my lesson without being yelled at or charged with anything.  They were right, I never did anything like that again.

The truck was replaced through insurance, and I lived.? That's what mattered.? I was so scared to drive after that, so my parents forced me to drive the next day...right past the accident site.? I admit it right here, I cried the whole time I drove through that area.? I'm glad my parents forced me to do that, because it would have been worse if I didn't drive for a couple months.

The worst accident?  My brother and I were going through an intersection that turned right after it, and this asshole in a 2000-ish BMW 740iL hit us on the right rear quarter panel.  It scuffed the paint from his car to ours.  It was dark and it was his fault.  He didn't admit it was his fault so they called it a "no fault" and we both drove off...

One of my friends had a bad one yesterday.

He was driving on a small road (no center line) with probably a 30mph speed limit when something fell off the seat. Evidently he took his eye off the road to retrieve it and next thing he knew the truck was on its side in a creek. Evidently he drifted off the road and just happened to do so right when the road went over a creek. His truck (a real nice Z71) is likely totaled and no telling what will happen to his insurance, but he's fine.

My mom believes in miracles, and to an extent, I do, too.  About an hour before we got on the road to get back to Pittsburgh after spring break, an SUV was going north (The direction we're going in the pic) when a white truck gave them a NASCAR-style tap because they were going too slow by his standards.  At 70 mph, this sent the SUV across the median where it met head on with a Mustang going 70 mph in the opposite direction.

This pic is the only thing I could get of the wreckage.  The info I'm telling is only because it apparently made it to the newspaper, so my mom told me.  The only other thing I saw was the Mustang's fender lying in the middle of the highway.  Both the driver of the SUV and the Mustang were killed, and the driver of the white truck has not been found yet.

I had been slow the whole day.  First, we were supposed to be on the road by noon, then 2, then 4 (when this happened), and finally we got out of North Canton at 5.  So sometimes you have to feel a little luck is with you.

I think my facts were a little off.  In any case, here's the article I found.

GREEN Michael Sill, 63, of Green, was the motorist killed Sunday in a possible hit-and-run wreck on Interstate 77, Summit County authorities said.

Another motorist injured in the wreck, Mark Spreadbury of the 1900 block of Balmore Street NW, Lake Township, was in serious condition Monday at Akron City Hospital, said Summit County sheriff's staff.

Summit County authorities say they still are looking for a third motorist, a man who was driving a white pickup truck, whose actions some witnesses say are responsible for the traffic crash.

According to the sheriff's staff, Sill had been driving a Ford Mustang south on Interstate 77 when the car collided with a sport utility vehicle Spreadbury was driving.

Witnesses told Summit County sheriff's deputies that a white pickup truck bumped the rear of Spreadbury's sport utility vehicle in the northbound lanes of Interstate 77, forcing Spreadbury's vehicle across the highway divider into the southbound lanes.

The pickup truck driver failed to stop. It is not certain if he would face any charges stemming from the wreck.

"The problem is, we don't have all the answers yet," Lt. Shane Barker of the Summit County sheriff's staff said. "We are getting conflicting witness statements."

A friend of mine totalled his car Wednesday. He was waiting to turn into his girlfriend's house on the highway in his 99' Grand Prix coupe when a Ram 3500 Dually rear-ended him doing around 55 mph. His tail-lights were sitting in the back seat afterwards, while the front end of the Dodge was up under the dash.

And, speaking of friends, my friend's Z71 was totaled, but his parents got what they paid for it two years ago from the insurance company and he got a much newer truck ('04 Ram with 32k) so it all worked out pretty good.

Hope everyone's alright.  It's always good to keep a eye on the rearview mirror when sitting waiting to turn.  But I know I'm being a monday morning QB.

Doesn't matter. Unless you're driving a Ferrari or something, you won't be able to accelerate that fast to get out of the way.

You could pull off the road.

Even if you get up to 5 mph, the impact occurs at 5 mph less.

Sure you could.  You see a car rapidly approaching and stab the gas.  Worst case scenario they tap you while moving, which is a lot better.
