Title: ***Wimmer Photographs The New C-Class!!!***
Post by: cawimmer430 on March 17, 2007, 10:38:07 AM
Guys, I stopped by the local Mercedes-Benz dealership this afternoon and look what was up at the dealership.  :mrcool:
THIS!

Ok, so it looks pretty basic because it is a Classic trim level C-Class, but I came away with a good impression of the car.

First off, compared to the W203, the W204 looks a little more compact and sleeker. Interesting how they managed to squeeze more interior space out of this thing. The car looks pretty good, and this was a base model Classic version. Overall, the design looks fantastic in person. I just wish this were an Elegance or Avantgarde version for the Classic version still looks pretty empty and lacking in something. Overall though, sleek and dynamic looking.

The interior was the surprising part. The pictures cannot convey the quality look to it. I was pleasantly surprised from the visual aspect of the interior. The design is pretty cool and the dark plastics used look much more HQ than the plastics used in the W203. Also, there's more chrome or chrome imitating plastic on the inside which gives a more upscale impression. Looking good in this department.  :mrcool:

More pictures!

It sucks.? It wouldn't even make my top 5 if I were shopping this class.? The front looks smashed in and so does the rear.? The tail lights are atrocious.? How the same company that makes the elegent E class made this i don't understand.  The BMW 3 whales the piss out of it.

I've never been a C-Class fan (as I'm sure you know ), but that car really does look great.  I've never driven a C-class of any generation, but if the purported driving improvements are there, I'm sure it will be contender.

Again, I've really warmed up to the styling of the car.  The rear looks fantastic IMO, it's reminiscent of a first gen A5, albeit a bit more contoured.

:ohyeah:

For the record, I do agree with Catman about the E-Class.  If I'm buying a Merc, the E-Class would be it.

The rear lights of the BMW 3er look like they came from a Hyundai.

You won't piss me off with such comments. Design is subjective. Besides, this was an entry-level CLASSIC trim level C-Class, the type used by taxi and police fleets. Elegance and Avantgarde look better.

My point is that the E class looks so much more elegent.  This car looks like a Hyundai with a Mercedes grille. :P

The first reviews are pretty positive overall though the car isn't on the same level as a BMW 3-Series in sport and handling, but it is much improved over the W203.

I KNOW! Seriously, it looked awesome from pictures but this just looks like absolute ass. The damn E46 sedan looks much better and it's 2-3 years older.

I don't think it would look too bad if they flipped the taillights upside down, but the rear looks decidedly droopy as it is now.

I don't know, I kind of like the rear. It looks like inverted E-Class / SLK / CL lights and they add some sporty lines to the car. I think this car would look really hot in Elegance and Avantgarde trim. Classic is just too boring, lacks something...

Here in Europe, this trim level is popular with people who want a Mercedes and don't want to pay too much for this and that. It's not the style and trim that matters, it's the badge. A Mercedes is a Mercedes.  ;)

Wimmer, your blind following of Mercedes has gone too far.  This car is so unexceptional it's not funny.  Even the steering wheel looks bad.  It has a droopy butt and a stubby nose.  The old model looks better IMO.  In this case Jake Miller has it right, even a G35 is much nicer.  Sorry man, but the car stinks. :tounge:

I'm suprised the EU still lets Mercedes have that hood ornament.

Looks like it could hurt some drunk-ass pedestrian when he wanders in front of your car. On the plus side, it appears the new front end was designed by Serta so he can take a nap on your front end.

Not a fan. It manages to look droopy and stupidly upright all at the same time. Plus, one could build a house in the vast panel gap between the bonnet and front fender.

......and that F'ING AWFUL STEERING WHEEL.

I hate to say it, but I have to agree that it looks like a Hyundai.  I like Mercs and this looked good in pics but here it is awful. Classic trim or not, the overall design is the same in all trim levels and it looks bad. I hope AMG can do something with it.

This is your opinion, I on the other hand think this car looks very good. The older C-Class was always a decent car in the design department, but it looked a tad boring compared to the Audi A4 etc. The new C-Class takes care of this while remaining conservative, but with some flashy and dynamic design cues (which includes the rear). I'll be driving one soon too.

That's because you're looking at an economy / cheap trim level. These are the higher spec trim levels.

Also, I love Mercedes-Benz, that's no secret but I am no blind fanboy. I think I have to defend the C-Class here. I subscribe to Mercedes Magazin, the inhouse publication of this brand. They had a special feature on the new C-Class that provided detailed insights into the design etc.

To me, this car looks hot, very hot. The old W203 C-Class looks boring and outdated. And while the new C-Class isn't exactly ground breaking in terms of design, it looks dynamic, fresh and elegant and that's what matters. Besides, the vast majority of customers want something a bit conservative and this is one reason why the C-Class was styled in this form. We should applaud Mercedes for allowing customers to individualize their C-Class so dramatically with the Elegance or Avantgarde trim options. I agree that the Classic trim shown here lacks something, but that's because it is a base trim made for taxi, police, rental and business fleets. Most private buyers opt for the higher spec trim levels.

There was also an interview with Peter Pfeiffer, the design boss at Mercedes and he mentioned that a large part of the design inspiration for the new C-Class came from the 1982-1993 190-Series (W201). Essentially, the W204 is a semi-retro-styled 190-Series with modern, more dynamic design cues. And as someone who spends a great deal reading and being around Mercedes, I do see some elements of the 190-Series in this car.

And to me, and many others, the C-Class looks pretty good. Alone in Germany, there are already over 55,000 orders for this car. Let's not even mention all of Europe. And this car doesn't look anything like a Kia or Hyundai.  :nono:

That white paint does look very good on the new C class. Dark colors imo do not put it in a favorable light.  All in all it looks good without being anything to get excited about.

As do most Mercedes, with the exception of the CLS, SLK and S-Class.

I still consider the current Sl the best roadster on the market and it turns my head whenever I see one. I would say that, that is currently the best looking benz with the E class taking second place. The SLK and and CLS imo had a WOW factor when they came out but the styling did not age to well. The S class looks very elegant but I can not get over the huge cave covering the instrumentation that should have been broken up into two seperate segments.

See?  This view just ruins the whole car for me.  Had they made the car a few inches longer and raised the deck lid up it would look pretty nice.  But, unfortunately, someone decided to drop a piano on the trunk. Holy crap I just noticed how the hood closes on the front fender.  That seam looks awful. :nono:

Look at this G35

It's a smart looking car, not the best out there but at least Infiniti was able to create a short rear deck without it looking droopy.  Plus it looks wide and planted as a sport sedan should.  The new C looks tall, narrow and droopy at the same time.  It's a disaster. :tounge:

If they raised the lid they would have gotten a BMW 6er, 7er effect. The more I look at the white one the more I like it, but the silver one and the bronze one do not look right in fact they look awful. Which is unusual since a Mercedes traditionally looks good in silver.

The gray one above looks pretty good but they needed to put the camera on the ground to eliminate the droop.

The classic version odviously looks a little barebones. But I think it's a pretty good design besides the rather droopy rear end. I agree that the steering wheel looks awful. I really like it in white though! I don't think darker colours work well with it.

The Lexus IS looks better though

That's because you're looking at an economy / cheap trim level. These are the higher spec trim levels.

Yes those indeed look to be an improvement.

I hope they never sell that cheapo trim level here.

I honestly don't see what makes this a problem. A short rear lid is something almost every car in this class has. Also, when I checked out the car yesterday, the boot didn't look anything like in the photos. You probably need to see it in real life.  :ohyeah:

The hood seam on the front fender was a mistake too.  It ruins the side profile.  They've succeeded in creating a problem from every angle.  I predict it will not increase sales in NA.  The superior G35 will certainly outsell it.  Plus the infiniti is not crippled with a heinous steering wheel.  So much nicer inside the G.

Sorry to say this but your comment above sound like those of an Infiniti fanboy. A lot of people don't buy cars based on looks but because of the badge or safety features etc. Also, I know quite a few W203 C-Class owners on GermanCarZone who like the look and have already ordered a W204 - and these people are not 20 year old enthusiasts but guys in their late 20s or 30s. And most of them like the interior. Also, if you don't like the steering wheel, order the other one:

If they used the Dodge Calibers platform, it wouldn't be called W204 would it? The W,C,A or R codes at Mercedes signify the PLATFORM and the type of car (C = coupe, R = roadster etc.). Dodge has nothing to do with the new C-Class.

The IS has an aggressive front, which is fine, but the sides of the car are bland and conservative. The rear end is boxy and ackward. They needed to decide if if they were going to make the entire car aggressive or conservative but instead they tried to combine the two and it doesn't work.

The IS300 was a great design, they kept one theme throughout the whole car and it worked:

Regarding the hood seam all of the newer cars which are also sold in Europe have that due to the new regulations regarding pedestrian safety. Some designers are better at hiding it though.

Some examples:

It's not as engaging as a 3-Series or A4 (the old one was), but it's not a boring drive. My main gripes with the IS are the lack of a 6MT on the 350 model and no way to turn off traction control. I was considering it as a replacement at one time.

The IS looks like car.  If it were in a movie, it would be billed as "Car #4".  It just looks like something.  It has no character, no boldness, and it's completely anonymous.  The sides have no shape, the front feigns aggression, and if you put together the whole package it could be any car in the Toyota line.

I'd have to give that honor to the CTS,9-3,or A4.

I"d have to give that honor to the E90.
E92, not so much.

The IS is attractive, yes, but it's not the best in class. The A4 and E90 certainly look better. Both those cars have unmatched classiness.

The IS and 3 series?

How do you people drive, when you're all so blind?

The 3-series is far more involving to drive than an IS. I know it gets old hearing it but the 3er probably is the best drivers car in the segment.

I don't think that gets old.

The IS could be the most fun and involving and the fastest and the cheapest, that doesn't make it not ugly.

The 3 series is the same.  I didn't say it wasn't a good car.  I just said it was ugly, and you should all have your eyes tested.

How can I get that paintjob on the hood of my Esteem? Do they make that in a vinyl decal?

I wish. BMW doesn't offer two-tones in the US except for the Terra leather (which is very nice IMO).

My car is all-black on the inside. I like black interiors, but I like them even more when they're two-tones with lighter colored seats. One of my favorites is the 'Silver leather' interior audi had on its old S6.
