... been selling an absolutely ridiculous amount of Fusions? (The Fusion is a personal favorite of mine)
I noticed it on my way home today from work... They seem to be all over the place. How well have they been selling?
I never see any around here, but I do see an insane amount of Subaru Legacy wagons
Hardly see any of them here. I do, however, see LOADS of brand new David McDavid Honda Accords.
Haven't seen any here.
I haven't really payed attention.

Are you a Houstonian or do they have franchises elsewhere as well? (We looked at a Frontier at David McDavid Nissan in Houston)
I'm a Planoian. We've got David McDavid dealerships left and right. Hell, we're leasing our Accord from David McDavid Honda of Frisco.

I've noticed it. There are a lot of new Camries too.
I've noticed some, but not a ton. My boss has a pearlescent white Fusion.
Pitt's security guards have rental white Fusions. Next to the Aura, they both are very nice cars.
alot of fleet sales for the fusion perhaps? I personally don't see too many of them
I see a fair number, but not Camry/Accord level.

They've been selling at a rate of about 15k units a month, with around 15% going to fleets. There is only one plant making Fusions and they are on a third shift to keep up with the demand. Smaller sales than Accord and Camry, to be sure, but maxing out the plant makes it a success.
I notice a lot of them and they aren't fleet cars for the most part. I actually see a lot of Lincoln Zephyrs too.
I see a few here and there, about as often as I see new Camrys. I've never seen a fleet one, though.
I've never seen one. I did see 235738475432 Commodore SS-Vs today, though.
They're relatively popular here, more so than the Aura or G6 maybe, but they're aren't "tons" of them.

I see more G6's than either the Aura or Fusion, but I do see quite a few Fusions.
Its a nice car IMHO. I think the G6 is the nicest looking of the bunch, but the Fusion is a close second, and the Aura a not-to-distant third.

Like I said, never seen a fleet one. I don't doubt that they exist, I've just never seen one. Impalas and Camrys on the other hand...
yeah. I think in Alberta, rental and corporate fleet cars have the different format license plate; one letter followed by 5 numbers. I think our Allure's is G-34734. If you keep your eye out for that, the Hertz and Avis cars, which don't have stickers like the Budget and National ones, will become more obvious to you.
Guy, I've lived in Alberta my entire life: I know how to spot a fleet car licence plate...

I was there a week and I figured it out. It's no big achievement. ;)

I think we know about the different plate format. Did you know they also have black stickers in the corner of the plate for fleet cars? I could count the fleet Fusions I have seen on one hand. I see 3 or 4 times more Fusions then Auras, and I think the G6 looks fairly plain and there is nothing about them that gets me excited. I personally think the Zephyr (MKZ or whatever the fuck it is now) looks better in person then the Fusion does.
I also like the Zephyr better. I saw a Milan on the road with Michigan plates yesterday. Looked awkward IMO.
I've noticed quite a few in my region. I think one reason is that the 'bold' grille makes them easy to spot. What's surprising however, is l've seen quite a few Edges as well as it's Lincoln cousin the MKX.

A guy I go to lunch with a lot (who owns an Altima, and isn't what I'd consider a "car guy") has commented to me a couple of times that he really likes the new Edge (usually while walking past one in the parking lot). I tend to agree with him, its pretty sharp ( ) looking.

I got a ride in one and I like it. I don't know why the magazines don't, but I do.
It's style over substance. It's nice enough, but overweight and not roomy for its exterior size. IIRC, the Escape has more cargo space. And it's expensive for what it is.

Um, style IS a form of substance. Looks ARE important and should be. Otherwise the Aztec should have been the best buy on the planet for a minivan, as you could get the AWD one for $10k less than a normal GM minivan... When you spend the money on a new car, it had damn well better look good to you.

I think the Murano looks better than the Edge, and don't factor looks into my decision. An illustration of the two serious ways that styling is subjective.

So, manufacturers (of any product) spend millions of dollars and years of time styling their new products and you say it's unimportant in making a decision? Hell, it's a huge part of the substance of a product.
Well, there's a butt for every seat, I guess.

In fact, people will buy an 'inferior' product if it looks OK. This gets into demand theory and utility theory, but lets not go there since this isn't an economics class. Suffice it to say that when one makes a choice we can only assume they make the choice that is best for them.

True. Like you said, this isnt' an economics class, but in this day and age, very little that's new is inferior to what people have before they buy it. Coming from a say, '80s Chevy Citation, even a Cavalier woudl have been an improvement, which is why they sold so many. When the "inferior" new product is still superior to the product they are replacing, then subjective factors will come into play much more prominently.
For example in the other thread about economy cars, I picked the Lancer, due to it's looks. All of them are well superior to my current cars in MPG, so that factor left my criteria. Al of them are relatively equal on comfort for me, so it comes down to looks and feel. The Lancer feels sporty and looks good, and those looks are a large part of the substance of the car.
OTOH, over in the thread on the mid engine VW, I discuss the beauty of function, where the mid engine Civic, Mini, and Honda 600 get their looks directly from their function. Since their function is to be performance cars, their looks reflect their performance. Since performance is a desirable criteria, their looks become desirable due to the function they represent.
Yet in either case, the looks are a big part of the substance of the vehicle, either by themselves or by what the looks represent.
The Aztek, for example, had no reason to look like it did, thus sold poorly due to being truly ugly. (The people I've met that did buy them generally knew they were ugly and bought them for their function and value of the build quality for the price, with a little of the novelty factor thrown in.)

That is simple, it handles more like a fwd car, most people drive cars that are dragged around through front wheel drive, they are used to the way it feels. It reminds them of thier taurus/camera/accordain, it feels more familiar.
The Morono is rwd baised, most people do not have much experience with rwd..
Certainly this is one of the reasons the MDX/Pilotless/toyota lowlander/RX sell, they are not so far from the plebian sedans from which they are based.
Familiarity doesn't breed contempt when it comes to vehicles.

I don't anyone wouldn't factor looks into the decision when buying a car. You wouldn't buy something that you thought was ugly. Even if you don't go out to buy a good looking car, I think subconsciously it's still a factor.

I saw one yesterday and literally said to myself "Damn, that is UGLY". It reminds me of the Solara.
Oh, there's a definite Solara resemblance. Especially the shape of the taillights.

I don't know if you see what I see in these pics, but the Solara in my eyes tends to look like... like a fat chick wearing too-tight jeans. A body too big for it's chassis. You know?
Whereas the G6 tends to borrow a few cues that it shouldn't, but still comes across as alright.
I think if I could find a 3/4 rear view pic from a higher angle you'd see what I mean.
The Toyota has sunken rear wheels.
That's part of the problem, for sure.
I definately agree it is a fat chick wearing tight jeans.
Okay, look at that pic. Look at the rear. Notice the overhang? Hugh Jass, no doubt about it. Notice in this following pic how it's a sort of automotive 'muffin top' look at the back, a fat flabby gut hanging across the chassis.
See? Look at the rear wheels.
Now if you pushed the rear wheels further back in the chassis, trimmed the fat off the side, gave it more subtle, less bulbous curves, you'd get something like this:

I've seen lots of Fusions in the Omaha area.
We deliver several copies of our free circulation car book to each advertising dealer on our route. While there seem to be different Fusions at the Ford dealer every 2 weeks, the L-M dealer seems to have the same old ugly Milans and MKZs lingering around.
