Title: Are pick-up beds standard sizes?
Post by: Rupert on May 20, 2007, 04:02:43 PM
I'd like to get a canopy for the Ranger so I can sleep in the back, and I wanna get it used. When someone advertises a canopy that fits an S10 or a Taco, might it also fit mine?

It might fit, but I'm doubtful...'cause every truck has its own length and width, and that alone determines bed size.  Then you have to take into consideration which "cab" the truck has (Crew, standard, extended, etc.)...

It might work.

There are a few bed lengths that are considered more or less "standard" (e.g. the 6.5' and 8' bed lengths seem to be the norm with full-size trucks), but I'm sure widths will vary.

Aren't regular beds made to fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood, and not much more?

We put 4x8 sheets of OSB in the back of my dad's old 7' long box Ranger. Most trucks are much wider than that.

Lengths tend to be standardized, width however isn't.

No, domestics tend to be a bit larger. You might have luck fitting the S-10 topper to the Ranger, although I'd measure before you bought. We've exchanged boxes between our Fords/GMs/Dodges at work.

Why not look for a used Ranger canopy? I'm sure they're just as common as any other.

The brands all do vary.  If you know a good welder and don't mind getting a little creative, you can probably get something to fit  I know F150s are very different from Mopars or Chevys, but I'm pretty sure as long as the beds are the same length, you can get the cap to fit with a few mods.

Another think you need to look out for with the cab configuration is the angle of the rear wall of the cab/front wall of the cap.  On the regular vs. extended cab tacoma the beds are identical in size but the angle of the back of the cab is different.  But this is less of an issue than lenght/width.

Yeah, that's mostly a looks issue. (Aerodynamics notwithstanding). I'm not concerned about that since it'll really only be on there when I'm gonna be sleeping in the back.

That's the best advice anyone can give you!

Not necessarily.  If you have the wrong angle the edges will hit and prevent the rails from lining up.  Say, for example, a reg cab has an angle like this: | and an extended cab has this: \  The cap is made ti fit the truck.  If you put an extended cab cap on a reg cab, the top will jam before the bottom lines up.  Other way around and you'd be fine, it just wouldn't look perfect.

Again, are there a ton of cheap Taco and Chevy caps for sale in your area but no Ranger caps?

Do you have a buddy willing to basically give away a Taco cap or something? If you're just browsing the used ads, just look a litle harder for a Ranger cap. Honestly, it's the best thing you could do, and I simply can't believe you can't find one rather easily unless you've got that aforementioned crazy-ass deal.

I've seen lots of 'Yota caps, and a couple of others, but no Rangers. Look, if there are ten ads for caps, three or four of them might be cheap enough for me, and two or three might be Ranger caps, so the chances of a cap being both cheap and for a Ranger are pretty low. I've been looking thoroughly on craigslist daily, and there's nothing, so bugger off.

I used an S-10 cap on my '94 Ranger, std cab, std length bed, and it fit just fine. The corners didn't line up 100% perfect, but it was only a visual thing. The rear liftback even sealed right to the tailgate nicely, and it lined up well with the rear of the cab. Just don't ask me to remember the brand of the cap, or what year S-10 it was from, because I have no idea.

Actually, like NACar, one of the part time guys at the shop has a Ranger (1995), and he has a cap on it that came from a '91 S-10.  It's a pretty close fit.

I don't think a Tacoma cap will work, the Taco has a much narrower bed than the other two IIRC.

Oh, forgive me for thinking it's probably just as likely for one to get their hands on a Ranger cab as an S-10 or Tacoma cab. It was only the #1 selling light truck for, what, 20 years?

I wasn't trying to be an asshole, I was trying to figure out why someone would want an ill-fitting cap when my logic told me it was just as likely to get one's hands on the proper cap. Sorry for posting!
