Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom
« on: June 19, 2013, 02:58:05 pm »
Finally. It's not perfect, but I have wanted something like this for so long I don't really care. I'm definitely gonna buy this down the line and probably sell the NEX C3 + D40 and put that money towards an FX camera.

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s4_zoom-5447.php

Lot of folks are bitching about the sensor size, yadda yadda. "What about low light & action photography????" No cell phone or point and shoot is good for that as is anyway, and we are a long way from a little 1/2.3" sensor being able to match something like an APS-C sensor in speed. Maybe with redundant pixels and a really sophisticated vibration compensation algorithm. In any case, zoom will come in handy for sure for portraits, concerts and other shit people use phone cameras for. Seems like every camera that comes out gets judged against something like a D600 by the photography blogosphere... it's silly.

It would be kind of cool to have a "big sensor" fixed lens camera phone though. Maybe a modular phone with different camera modules. That would enable the likes of Nikon, Canon etc to get into the smartphone game. I never got why they never slapped a smartphone onto the back of a slim P&S.

It's cool, but i see that lens getting damaged sticking out that far and not being comfortable in a jeans pocket.

It is a bit much, but not much bigger than my G1 or some of the bricks I used to carry.

It's probably 4 times thicker or more.

The S4 is already a monster phone. If its important enough that you want to take "good" pictures of it, then you'd still be better served by a dedicated pocket camera.

It's a weird market, but apparently Sporty is it.

I can't say that I'd buy one, but hey, more choices!  A serviceable camera is all I need for my phone.  If I want better quality, I can take my Sony NEX 5N.  Put the 16 mm pancake lens on, and it's pocketable.

The way I see it, more versatility isn't a bad thing. I think I will hold off though. I don't want to be an early adopter in the beginning of a camera war.

Here's a more useful variant of the S4:

If this was around when I got my phone, I'd have strongly considered it.

I had a friend with a water proof phone.  He'd literally pick out the hottest girl at a part, walk up to her, drop his phone in her beer, then introduce himself.  It was the lamest ice breaker ever.

What about the Sony QX lens camera that to an android, iOS Smartphone and uses that as a screen?

Oh, hell yeah! Sony's got the right idea there. The Samsung blahblah Zoom seems impractical in its size, but with the Sony, the added bulk is completely optional.

Too bad there's a lag. I don't see why they couldn't do some tricks with buffering and resampling.

Apparently the lag is dependent on the Smartphone used. My biggest complaint would be lack of full manual control.

Not feeling the Sony thing. So many issues. Setup is a nightmare- unless you are walking around with this thing setup already, no way you are getting this thing rolling in time to capture a funny shot. Meanwhile my old S 4G goes from black screen to ready to shoot in ~5 seconds. This thing is not fitting in even a coat jacket unless you are wearing an Antartic expedition anorak.

But the biggest hole in the plot is, if I have to carry a device that won't fit in my pocket and costs a couple hundred bucks, why not just pony up for a full blown MILC? My NEX-C3 outperforms both the cameras these things are based on, and in the case of the QX100 costs about $100-150 less.

No, the logical + inevitable conclusion for the marriage of cameras and cell phones is the large sensor cameraphone. An APS-C sensor with a foldaway prime lens will be the game changer... it is just a matter of which manufacturer will be the first to get their heads out of their ass. All indicators point to Samsung but we will see.

Of course it's going to be clunky to throw on this lens when you need to take a quick candid. But if you could take the same slim phone you bring to work on an everyday basis, throw a lens on it for a day, and have a good solution for your vacation pics, that's really good stuff.

For a quick candid just use the camera on your phone.

I don't want to carry something as big as an S4 every day. This would give an option of taking a camera when I want one w/o much added bulk.

I used to like to keep all devices separate:  MP3 player, cell phone, camera, game system, etc.  Phone's replaced everything but my camera.  It's good enough for quick snap shots now, but no where near good enough quality to replace my NEX-5N.  I still think we're a ways off from that.

IDK. Just went to the car show, thought about this. Carrying my phone + camera was really no more inconvenient than the phone and essentially just the lens. Plus the camera fires up faster etc. etc. I don't think this is the right form factor, though I give Sony an A for effort, just like Betamax, DAT, Minidisc, ATRAC, etc. etc. Better to take the Apple road and just optimize/beautify what already works rather than reinvent the wheel into a square

Everything's converging into the camera, and there are so many convenience benefits to having everything flow into your phone by default. I bet the majority of digital pictures taken today are done in Instagram and put on Facebooks anyways. An alternative would be to have a Wi-Fi Direct link that pushes pictures from the camera to the phone in real time. I'd be fine with that, too.

I dont post most of the pics. I dont know that I'd want it to be automatic.

I would like a BT link between my camera and phone though. If FB or IG had an integrated app to push from the camera to the web that would be cool.
