3700 pounds isn't so bad.  This is probably the weight for the manumatic model.  For comparisions sake a Porsche 911 Turbo S-tronic weighs 3,572 lbs. (1,620 kg).  Supposedly there are higher performance light weight models that drop weight by 100kg.

You think a more fair comparison would be between the GT-R and the GT3?

Personally I think the 3700 lbs is fine. Its still lighter than a 6-series for example, and about the same weight as an S5 or M3...but it will have more power than either of them.

Comparisons to the 911 GT3 and Corvette are silly IMHO. I understand it will theoretically compete with them for the same customers, but the GT-R is a 4-seater GT, not a 2-seater sports car. I don't think it will take customers for either though. I don't see many people buying a Porsche 911 deciding to get this instead. The 911 has never been a performance bargain, the point is to have the classic styling and the rear-engined layout.

FlatBlackCaddy

Has anyone seen pictures of the prepo interior?

Those that have seen the car in person are shocked by how small it is(iirc). I'm wondering if nissan is even going to bother wastin the space and compromising the drivers position with a set of useless rear seats.

the_koof

I really hope that the GT-R isn't quite that heavy. Around 3500 lbs would be fine considering its AWD and such.

I read somewhere that sometime after launch,a less expensive and more spartan variant may come out (I bet its lighter too).

Nissan takes pre-orders for GT-R

Nissan dealerships in Japan began taking pre-orders for the upcoming GT-R sports car yesterday. Buyers will be able to place their pre-orders up until the car's October 28th unveiling at the Tokyo Motor Show. However, anyone who signs to take delivery of the car must do so, no order cancellations will be allowed.

The GT-R is available in three different variants. The standard model is rated at 480 horsepower and starts at $57,000 with the up-level V-Spec raising the price to $67,000. The GT-R EVO-Spec ? which has 530 horsepower and sheds 200 pounds ? retails for $94,000. Buyers will begin to take delivery of their cars starting in December.

There has been no word from Nissan if the GT-R's warranty will be voided if it is sold within the first year it is titled.

A 3700lbs car that laps the 'Ring in around 7:40 is a very fast car, regardless.

It should be much faster than that.

They benchmarked the 911 turbo, looking at specs alone it should perform inline with the 911 turbo and the evo version would go after the GT2.

Porsche 911 turbo tiptronic(faster of the two per porsche)
480HP 3500lbs 0-60 in 3.4 seconds.

The Base GTR even with the rumored 3700lb curb weight has the same power, and using a DSG type box(no doubt the faster of the two options)
the GTR should be good for a 4.0 or slightly under sprint to sixty.

The EVO to GT2 will be alittle tougher sell, even with a 200lb decrease in weight the GTR will have a disadvantage against the 3200lb GT2. Power should be identical and if the GT2 is RWD(i didn't check) than the AWD of the GTR might take back some of the weight advantage of the porsche.

Nissan benchmarked the 911, and thats what they will deliver for a fraction of the price. I just wish i had more money so i would have to pick between the two.

The Automotive forums are all buzzing with talk of that 7:38 time they've managed to clock with a stopwatch.

http://news.windingroad.com/body-stylesmarket-segment/sportsgts/nissan-gt-r-laps-the-green-hell-faster-than-911-turbo/

"According to the latest news from our spies, the Nissan GT-R could be faster than a Porsche 911 Turbo around the infamous N?rburgring. Obviously, none of our spotters had sophisticated timing equipment on the cars, but using an actual stopwatch, a member of the KGP crew clocked the GT-R at an incredible 7:38 lap. That would be two full seconds faster than the current 997-generation 911 Turbo.

The legend also says the GT-R actually passed a 911 Turbo prototype during a lap. It?s possible that the Turbo wasn?t running an all-out performance test, but the possibility is certainly exciting. We won?t know for sure until the Tokyo Motor Show, but this certainly lends credence to the claims Nissan has been making about the GT-R?s performance.

Nissan has made it clear from the start that their new Skyline GT-R sports car is gunning for the Porsche 911 Turbo. A 911 Turbo has been the benchmark on hand during the Skyline track sessions, and some wheel-to-wheel, nose-to-tail battles have even been documented during testing. Nissan?s assault on Porsche?s pre-eminence has continued this past week at the N?rburgring, as test drivers have been running flat-out on the Nordschleife in pursuit of a fastest lap time than the 997 911 Turbo. We watched as a Porsche-driven prototype for a facelifted 911 Turbo was on the track at the same time as a Skyline GT-R prototype. Our observations from earlier test sessions?that the Skyline is as fast, and probably faster than the 911 Turbo?appeared to hold true this week, as the Skyline reeled-in, and overtook the 911 Turbo prototype. While this is not scientific by any means?the 911 may have been running a less-intense durability cycle, and not a flat-out race run?our reporters on the scene hand-timed several of the Skylines laps and they recorded a best lap of 7 minutes 38 seconds. If those times are accurate, then it appears that the Skyline may have bettered the 7:40 time logged by a 997 911 Turbo that stands as a lofty N?rburgring benchmark.

Nissan will be reportedly be continuing their run at the ?Ring record books next week. We?ll be searching out any official confirmation of the Skyline?s lap times, but you can be sure that if Nissan is successful at dethroning the 911 Turbo, it will be trumpeted loudly during the car?s Tokyo debut in october"

So if this data is true, the GTR is 5 seconds faster than a Z06 around the Ring.  I find it interesting that the GTR also passed a facelifted 911 turbo prototype (isn't it a bit early for a facelift?).  If the 911 really wasn't going all out, it must have taken every ounce of self control for the Porsche driver to not chase that GTR.

More GTR speculation.

It seems that now so close to the GTR's release date, the gloves are coming off, the front end camo is being made less restrictive, and the Nissan team is out to fully see what this car can do.

http://www.worldcarfans.com/9070924.013/nissan-gt-r-clearest-shots-yet

"Clearest Look Yet as the GTR sets it's sights on the Porsche Carrera GT
The Nissan GT-R development team has made another run at the N?rburgring record books this morning--and the Porsche 911 Turbo is no longer its target.  Sources intimately familiar with Nissan's latest test sessions inform us that the group is now gunning to beat the Porsche Carrera GT--a remarkably lofty goal considering that that Walter R?hrl reportedly piloted a Carrera GT around the 'Ring in 7 minutes 28 seconds.  Another Carrera GT, driven by Horst von Saurma, managed a lap time of 7:32.

Our sources tell us that, thus far, the Nissan has fallen short of the Carrera GT's record-time, but not by much.  Our mole tells us that some wet sections of the track slowed them down, and that with optimum track conditions, some heroic driving could still reel in the Porsche Supercar.  Nissan reps would not divulge any specific lap times, but they hinted that something under 7:35 may have been achieved.  Regardless, it's clear that Nissan's goal of overtaking the 911 Turbo has been achieved in a big way.

Stopwatch drama aside, Nissan also gave us some new eye-candy by removing most of the camouflage that has been a staple of GT-R sightings for more than a year now. Although not in showroom shape, the latest GT-R test cars give us our clearest look yet at the prototype's front bumper and headlights, and the GT-R badge is now prominently displayed in the grille-opening, and on the trunk lid.  We also managed a pretty revealing interior shot as one GT-R prepared to launch.  The rear vinyl camouflage has also been removed, and now only flat-black paint remains to obscure the GT-R's true styling.  This is as close as we're likely to get to an undisguised car until the car's Tokyo Show debut.

In their most recent 'Ring runs, Nissan rented the track early Monday morning, and had three GT-R prototypes--spaced one-minute apart--all taking their best shots.  One of the GT-Rs was reportedly driven by Horst von Saurma--the same 'Ring specialist that drove the Carrera GT to a 7:32 lap time.  Another driver was said to be a Japanese driver named Shimizu--possibly well-known racer Kazuo Shimizu.  The third GT-R pilot went un-named.

Nissan will likely continue their assault on the N?rburgring--and on the Porsche legacy--for the rest of this week.  If the GT-R manages to do the seemingly impossible and unseat the Carrera GT, we'll let you know."

The last shot is good because it really shows their are people just camped out and hand timing the thing.

FlatBlackCaddy

I can't wait for october, nissan seems to have really went all out with the GTR. The base model has the potential(specs) to run with a 120 thousand dollar porsche 911 turbo for half the price. This thing will sell very very well.

I should sell my Z and EVO, with the cash from the Z and no evo payment i could buy one with 15K down. Damnit i shouldn't think about such things.

FlatBlackCaddy

Hey 565, have you come across any mention of production numbers?

I hope they produce this thing for a few years, like you i may be interested in the idea of owning a 2nd or 3rd year model.

Well there's like tons of info on various forums, and some of it conflicts. For example some have been reporting the Base, V spec, EVO three tier setup. But more recent sources of preorders say that's just a fabrication

"BTW, here's some info relayed to US Nissan for pre-order.

its 3 trims not verient(sic) models

Exterior color options - Black, Red, Pearl White, Titanium Grey, Dark Metal Grey, Ultimate Metal Silver

3 trims all paddle shift

?Base? $66,675 alloy wheels

?black? -$68,580 forged wheels

?Premium? 71,870 Bose . alarm. Side air bags forged wheels

Not sure what the "Black" package is, or what MB is going to have to say about it."

and more speculation

"Further to my post #17, from the sounds of people in Japan pre-ordering, there will be a:
GT-R (nav & ETC standard)
GT-R "Black Edition" (black interior, different wheels/tires)
GT-R Premium Edition" (heated seats, BOSE system, security system, chrome wheels/run-flat tires)"

and more info

"Some dates being discussed on Japanese boards:
9.25 - dealers start taking orders
10.23 - press release for media
10.24 - announcement at TMS; webpage goes live
12.6 - sales start

Also..
Dimensions = 4655mm x 1895 x 1370 (183.3 x 74.6 x 53.9)
I hope it's incorrect but weight is...3836lb..
maybe its the gross weight.."

That weight seems awfully high if the car is running the times that people have been recording.  And it's mostly just buzz on the forums.  I highly doubt Nissan has really released any information on this, or else they would have released it in a more formal way.  I'm just mostly excited that the camo is starting to come off.

I think in this picture, you can almost see something that looks like the center divide between the backseats and a bit of the back seats themselves.

and in the profile shot there looks to be some room behind the drivers seat

It looks like there are two backseats, but it's most likely too small for adults.
