Same engine. Torquey mid range and raspy at the high end.  It's what Protege's are all about.

Yep, not my favorite engine, but it's okay.  I do like the torque, it's worlds better than the Civic was.  Just watch out for those long right handed turns.  Didn't know this when I bought the car, but apparently due to engine design, oil starvation can occur on long right handers, and that's very bad.

That's true for most transvers mounted wet sump engines- some starve in right handers, some in left.

I didn't know that.  The Mazda FS engine seems to be especially prone to it, per the info I've come across.  Of course, most of that info is coming from the guys on the Protege forums that abused the shit out of their cars.  And naturally, from the wannabe poseurs that have nothing better to do than post on car forums all day long.

Whew, glad I'm not one of those guys...

More than likely it just made me paranoid as it's the car I own, and I have no desire to deal with that.  Like you originally mentioned, I'm sure plenty of other car are equally susceptible, but I couldn't tell you which ones they are.

Just a case of me being overly neurotic, I fear.  Ahh well, 97K miles, and she still runs like a top.  I'm probably okay.

You have to wonder than why no one just cut a hole in the floor and stuck a driveshaft back there.  An AWD Toronado would have rocked.  The only RWD one I know of is Jay Leno's, and I think he did exactly what I am talking about.

Jay had some fellows from GM performance graft some ungodly powerful Corvette based drivetrain into his.

I was looking for a decent diagram of a TH425 transmission, but couldn't find one. They use a regular, seperate differential, turned around backwards. The final drive gear (in the tranny) is chain driven, ands there could possibly be a driveshaft sent out bot sides of it- but it would be quite difficult to fit a center diff.

When GM introduced these cars in '66-'67, FWD was billed as a performance feature. The Eldo had the most powerful caddy engine until '74.

I guess the idea of an AWD passenger car was a bit out there back then...

Of course that decision was made to expand the cargo area during Chrysler's "cab-forward" era, instead of for performance purposes, andcreated a substantial front weight bias in doing so.

But the car is huge for what it is.

Still, I like my N-S layout, even if the weight distribution isn't all there.  The wagon helps fix that a few percentage points, though.

Well, if I get another FWD car, it will mostly be a Civic or Golf based, so they're not longitudinal.  Actually, B6 Passats are transverse now too.

If I'm not mistaken, the B platform is exclusively at Audi now.

The other two cars are fine though, just not as unique.
