Extreme Ford Mustang FR500C to Hit Market in August
Date Posted 06-29-2005

DEARBORN, Mich. ? In a move designed to appeal to racing enthusiasts, Ford told Inside Line it plans to sell 25 Mustang FR500Cs designed exclusively for track use through its fordracingparts.com Web site.

The car, inspired by a 2002 Ford racing concept shown at SEMA, costs $125,000.

The white FR500C Mustangs will be assembled by Toronto-based Multimatic Motorsports, which is running one of five FR500Cs on the Grand Am Cup road-racing circuit. The special Mustangs have won four out of six Grand Am races this season, according to Ford Special Vehicle Team spokesman Alan Hall.

The FR500C ? which is not street-legal ? is powered by a 5.0-liter "Cammer R50" V8 engine that generates 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The engine features the same cylinder heads found in the $140,000 Ford GT supercar.

"With the new Mustang, Ford Racing saw the opportunity to create a ready-to-race car," Hall said. "It was inspired by a 2002 SEMA concept called the FR500C based on the last-generation Mustang. They took the Mustang to the extreme with that one. A lot of the Mustang book editors said it was the best Mustang they had ever driven ? what the ideal Mustang would be."

Hall added, "I would not say all 25 are spoken for, but there is strong interest."

What this means to you: All you have to add is the racing stripes and the sponsor stickers.
