Most cars at auto shows that I've seen ahve the hood unlatched so it's easier for onlookers to look into it.

dammit...beat me to it.

I'll take an FJ Cruiser or a 4Runner but I don't like the aggregate effect of the two mushed together. It would have been cooler if they had put more FJ into the rear end.

I don't see how that argument matters. If they went purely environmentally friendly, half their normal line up would dissapear as would most of their easy profits. That'd be a stupid way to run a large business.
