Street Legal: Spyker Clears Last Hurdle in U.S. Market Entry
Date Posted 07-01-2005

ZEEWOLDE, Netherlands ? Dutch supersports car builder Spyker has announced that half of its C8 exotic sports car lineup has been qualified roadworthy by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The waivers, issued June 30, were the final step in the two-year certification procedure.

The C8 is an Audi-powered two-seater, available as a coupe or a convertible.

These Spyker models received the approval of the Environmental Protection Agency three months ago. Completion of the NHTSA's roadworthiness procedure is a great relief to the carmaker.

Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars, said: "The door to our No. 1 market is now wide open. We foresee a rapid expansion of the distribution network to support American customer demand."

In order to meet consumer demand across the U.S. market, the company is planning to extend its 13-dealership American network to approximately 20 dealers by the end of 2005. The first step of this process is the planned opening of Spyker's Las Vegas showroom in July.

What this means to you: You can be the first on your block to own a Spyker ? unquestionably not a belly-button car.

The wheelbase seems to long, but other than that it looks good.

It looks a bit too bloated, IMO.

I think it would look fine just with a shorter wheelbase, the long wheelbase makes it look bloated.

I'd say it would look atrocious either way, but a shorter wheelbase could help a bit.
