There's a '66 Rambler Ambassador on CL that's absolutely mint and the seller, very likely an older person only wants $3700 for it.
https://tucson.craigslist.org/cto/d/bisbee-1966-amc-rambler-ambassador/6860092684.html
If I thought for one second I could get there before this is gone, I'd go for it. I think it really only has 40 K on it.
:banghead:

You called on it?

Emailed the guy. Asked if it runs, would it make it to Tucson? (about a hundred miles). His answer was that he drives it often, but never farther than ten miles from his home.

Now I'm actually thinking about it... ;).   I need to figure out how to get to Bisbee from here. Greyhound bus? I researched parts availabilty for old AMC cars, there are parts still available. This car needs fluid changes and maybe belts and hoses before a long trip to California from Bisbee, about a 12 hour drive.

I'll bet the old heap would make it. Wonder how old the tires are.

I asked the old guy how old the tires were- he says they're OEM.  Crap, is that even possible? That means the belts and hoses are also OE? Holy shit!

I'd say it's worth looking at at least.  It may never be a collector classic, but you'll won't lose on it.  Better spring for some new rubber though, if you plan on driving it back.

I just don't see the point of this. $15k tent trailer, complicated.

Yeah, those rigs are overpriced. Kinda cool, but way too much money.

It's like those $5k rooftop tents - as someone who camps a bit, they seems like an expensive, overly complex way to camp in your common crummy tent.

Those have dropped in price over the last few years.

They're now like $3000...

Rooftop tents are only of any real value if you can a) afford it without blinking or b) are worried about critters.  They may offer more room over a normal tent, but you still have to setup/teardown every time, so it's not like they're that advantageous to the normal person.

Plus you have to camp where your car is, plus climb up/down a ladder.

As far as setup goes, they have "instant up" tents now that go up easy/quick.

They were first popular in Australia. Presumably because of snakes.

I want to build one, but mostly because it'd be a fun project.

I think you can leave some amount of gear inside them (sleeping bags, etc.) and they're faster/easier to setup/breakdown than a traditional tent (maybe not compared to the new fangled instant-setup tents though). I guess it could also come in handy if you can't find a good place to put a tent, but I can't imagine that's super common.

But yeah, it's a whole lot of money for those advantages.

Soup DeVille

Yeah, you can keep some gear inside them, and many come with thick closed cell foam mattresses, which beat the crap out of any folding pad. Open, many of them form a vestibule wear you can change standing up, or even shower.

I'd like to try one out for a couple nights maybe, but I can't see ever buying one.

Could be a decent deal, depending on rust. Looks pretty clean but I'd want to check the corners & back of the cab

Not a bad price.  Agree about the rust, it's been repainted.

A 4 cyl. Skyline?  Can't be a real Skyline?

The Skyline wasn't just a performance car. It also had its share of plebian variations.
