The BMW X5 3.0sd makes its local debut around March of next year, fitted with an all-alloy, twin-turbo inline six developing 200kW (268hp) of power and 565Nm (417lb-ft) of torque, eclipsing the power and torque of the standard X5 3.0d.

Based on combined cycle testing in accordance with ADR81/01, the X5 3.0sd returns a fuel consumption figure of 8.8L/100km, but accelerates to 100km/h (62mph) from a standing start in 7.2 seconds.

The new engine draws in air at lower speeds with a small-turbine turbocharger, allowing faster throttle response and improved engine efficiency. In the higher reaches of the engine rev-range, the large-turbine turbocharger cuts in progressively.

BMW will launch the X5 3.0sd here in a standard grade equating to the X5 3.0d Executive and with the option of a Sport package. In standard trim, the X5 3.0sd shares the 18-inch alloy wheels, reversing camera, electrically adjustable driver's seat and steering column -- both with memory -- satnav with 8.8-inch colour monitor, digital TV reception, Bluetooth connectivity, voice recognition and BMW Assist.

Safety and convenience features include front, side and head airbags, anti-lock brakes with Dynamic Traction Control, Hill Descent Control, rain sensing wipers, automatic driving lights, multi-function steering wheel controls, iDrive control with eight 'favourite' settings, cruise control with braking function, engine start/stop button, six-stacker CD player, and leather upholstery.

Fitted with the Sport package, the X5 3.0sd gains sports suspension settings, sports leather steering wheel, 19-inch alloy wheels, front sport seats, BMW Individual high-gloss Satin Chrome trim, and anthracite BMW Individual roof lining.

BMW is pricing the X5 3.0sd at $102,800 for the standard level of trim, or $107,300 for the vehicle with the Sport pack option. (for US comparison, about 10% over the cost of a 3.0si, meaning approximately USD$50k)
