Best Motoring does it again, and tests the old versus new, Evo vs. STi.  Remember when watching this that their Subarus have EJ207s in them versus the bored versions we get here.  Nonetheless, this is a very interesting video to see how much progress is actually made between revamps and redesigns.

I don't care about all that shit.  I'll be going to college to get an education at a cost to my parents.  I'm not going to fool around.

For having a mere 10 hp over the old STi, I was very impressed with the performance of the new one.  I guess 0-60 isn't everything.  ;)

Why do you think my first turbo that I will get after grad school is going to be a JDM engine?  It sure as hell isn't parts availability.

I hope to get a ride in the new STI at the sno*drift rally next weekend, where I will also hopefully meet Pastrana/Block. (might get a press pass... :ohyeah: )

This is all tentative so don't get your hopes up.  More later.

On topic, I can't watch the video at work.

If you want to get me an autographed pic of them next to a rally car or something, I would be more than happy to send you my mailing address.  That sounds awesome.

They definitely gave us the boring version of the STi engine....

We got a boring version of the regular WRX engine too.  The JDM WRX gets a 246 hp engine.  Granted, theirs is a 2.0 instead of a 2.5.

LOL FYI IMHO the EVO and WRX are FTMFW.  Is that better?

That sucks.

I heard our 2.5 in the new model peaks at 6000RPM.  Those guys in the video were taking them to 8k in that video.

I think 7k.  My EJ18 redlines at 6k.

It probably spins to 7k, but I have heard power drops off at 6k.  Much the same situation as the MS3 from what I understand.

The DOHC engines are supposed to be peaky bastards.  I'd like to hear a little more about this, but I had always heard that the smaller engines were better as they revved higher.  Hmmm...

Did it look like the STI's had less understeer than the EVO's to anyone else?

Peak power is at 6000rpm as I understand, but the top end holds all the way up to redline, which is actually only 6700rpm on the new motor.

Also, the USDM WRX motor is making more that 224hp...tuners are measuring over 200 at the wheels, which indicates something around 240-250hp at the crank.  The STI is making advertised power.

They both seemed to understeer defiantly at the limit, but the STI is way more neutral than before.  They used to plow wide and howl the front tires around the slightest wiff of a corner, lol.

At that point, it's more of the drivers racing each other than the cars doing too much.  If I were organizing something like this (and I probably wouldn't as comparing the cars with different drivers isn't really very scientific) I would put the old cars up front, as that is a huge advantage, which the old cars "should" need.  Why was the Evo IX all the way at the back?

The best way is to take one driver and have him drive all the cars.  Even drivers of "comparable" skill and talent can result in vastly different times by car.
