"Scanning for KR" ...what does that mean?

A buddy called me the other day asking me what "scanning a vehicle for KR" meant because someone he had been talking to mentioned he had done so on his S/C Grand Prix or some such vehicle and my friend has a Buick Riviera with the same S/C engine.  I've gathered that it is usually (or only) done on S/C or T/C vehicles.  I think.

So what is this mysterious "scan" for "KR"?  I googled it, and didn't get much out of it.  Does it actually mean anything, or was this guy just bullshitting my friend to make him feel like an idiot?

Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Q:What is Knock Retard?
Knock Retard (hereafter referred to as KR) is the response from the PCM to cylinder detonation. KR is the measure of the number of degrees of overall ignition timing advance that must be removed from the engine to prevent detonation from continuing, thus protecting the engine from damage.

Thanks guys, especially Pancor.  ;)

It makes a lot more sense now, now that I know what KR actually stands for.
