Tire question

As some of you know, I utterly destroyed one of the rims on my Focus a month ago over a pothole. The tire shop replaced my rim and when they went to remount my tire found it would not hold air. Not a big problem except that Kelly tire no longer makes the Evo Z all season in 205/50/16. Also not a big problem but the tire they (not I) chose to match it with is a 300 tread wear rating Riken Raptor summer tire.

Basically, the car has very spooky driving characteristics in the snow now. Braking makes the rear end kick to one side, it oversteers like a RWD car and it just plain doesn't have enough grip.

I have to decide whether I want to keep the bad tire on there for the rest of the winter, replace the one summer tire with an all season, get another summer tire for L/R balance, or replace all 4 early. The other 3 still have quite a bit of life left in them, so I'm not sure I want to buy $300 tires now.

You might try just having the summer tire siped as a stopgao measure.

Buy two all season tires.  You'll have all seasons on all 4 corners, and a matching set on each axle.

The tire had no visible damage. The blister must have been small.

I'll keep an eye out at work for any all-season tires in that size. If by chance we take some off a car with decent tread left i'll keep them and if you want to pay for the shipping you can have them.

I'm going to check around locally. I'll see what the tire shops and salvage yards have.

I have $50 in my bank account right now. I don't need an excuse to get new tires as I won't getting them anyway. I'll have to go used. Come Fall, I'll pick up 4 new Kumho ASX's.

I actually have 4 205/70/14s sitting around in my shed. If I could find some 14" Escort rims, I'd have a silly looking, albeit effective set of tires!

The Focus uses a 4X108mm pattern, while all but the early 80's Escorts used 4X100.  205/70R14 is also significantly larger than the stock Focus 185/65R14.  If it did clear the struts, you woudn't be able to turn very sharply!

Err...the stock size is 205/50/16. 4x108 was used on the Escort from 81-90. 205/70/14 is probably too big, but it might work.

Tires are made out of rubber. Rubber can flex.
