Ok, obviously this isn't going to get to 30-pages unless somebody posts in here. Let me start with the pix:

I'll contribute! Congrats on the purchase!   My 1990 Golf (same basic car as your Jetta, sans trunk) is still on the road with over 500,000 km on it. Keep up on the basic maint and it should be a reliable car for you. What's the mileage, and did you get it for a good price?

Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Drive it for about 3 months, put some parts on it, then sell it to a junkyard.

It has 127k, and most of it seems to be in good order. Purchased for one 1990 Audi V8Q and $950.  I got the seller to knock off $350 because the clutch slips. Worst case I pay $400 for a clutch replacement - best case is the self-adjusting cable just needs some manual adjustment.

If it's the clutch, you may be surprised at how inexpensive they are for this car. I bought a rebuilt for $135 for my Golf... installed it myself.

The place I bought it from had a supercharged 2.0 sitting on their shop floor. I WANTED them to install it before I took delievery, but they wouldn't do it for free.

It's amazing how few people will do something for anybody for free.

Torsional stiffness is remarkable, as evidenced by the way the car lifts the inside rear wheel on tight autocross turns.

Congrats Nick. You gave up 4WD but at least you gained another pedal, so it's OK.

Is it an SA approved skullcap or not?

I forget what SA is. Could it be SA2000? If you mean some kind of FIA flame redardant standard, then no. It's a motorcycle helmet.

I don't know what it stands for, but it's above "M" is for motorcycle and is what most tracks require.

I'm looking at buying the BR-1 right now, but I'd really like to find a good helmet for a tad less than $400.

My Shoei was about $300. It's more than I'd usually spend, but I was being paranoid about safety when I first started riding. I can't tell you much about other helmets, but I love my Shoei.
