CJ and I are both in a similar predicimant. You live in NY state, and you likely have a nice public transport system, as well as a city where everything is pretty close and near you.
I live in Long Island. Guess again.

CJ has an older brother (as do I) who isn't always willing to take us places. We're both the youngest and relatively older parents that work. The last thing they want to do is shuffle some teen around. We both live in mid-size cities (200,000 to 300,000 people) where "the good stuff" is a bit of a drive. I also have many out-of-state friends, and the ones in the state are around a 25 minute drive.
I'm the youngest in my family as well, and both my parents work. I'm sure that "good stuff" can't be more than a mile or two away. I just bike.

That's why we need a car that can take the miles.

Close enough. NY in general is more "european" than the other states, say Ohio or Texas. You can get by without a car.

I know in my case, the "good stuff" (The Mall, shopping centers) are a 15-20 minute drive. It always isn't safe to walk or bike, there's a fair amount of gang violence. The Ohio buses suck, they don't take you anywhere, and taxis are expensive.

Ok, there's considerably more support for Public Transit, Bikes, Pedestrians and other forms of transportation that don't involve driving.

I'm sure there are sidewalks in Ohio. Public Transit isn't amazing in LI, and wherever there are roads/sidewalks, there is support for pedestrians.

Going to the "good stuff" here also takes 20-25 minutes by car, but it's not like it's far by bike either. I ride to downtown (not so much the mall because it's too expensive) all the time on my bicycle.

Typically gangs and others dominate the streets. It's safer in a car.

You are aware that there's more to NY state than just the greater NYC area, right?  Upstate (which makes up like 90% of the state by landmass) is an entirely different game from the downstate area.  Upstate is largely rural (20% of the state is covered by the Adirondack park, which is mostly wilderness with some little towns and villages here and there) with next to zero public transportation.

I hadn't thought of the Riviera!  I LOVE those!!

Here's a tidy 1997 with 97,000 miles:
http://dallas.craigslist.org/car/629758935.html

Here is a perfect running and great driving 1997 Buick Rivera Supercharged luxury coupe. The 3.8 Litre Supercharged engine runs great and the automatic transmission shifts great. Virginia Inspected and ready for a new owner. The black exterior is nice. It has some scratches including one on the roof...remember it is a 10 year old black car!! No dents or damages. Has the nice alloy wheels with good tires. The gray leather interior is fabulous and shows only minor wear. Has all power options including dual power and heated seats, climate control, memory package, woodgrain trim and dual airbags. Also has floor mats, remote keyless entry with two sets of keys and remotes, and Concert Sound II stereo with cd and cassette player.

At our dealership we work very hard to accurately describe our vehicles through text descriptions and elaborate photos.
Please read the descriptions thoroughly and view all pictures. These are for sale only here so check out our listings!!

Here's a 1998 Riviera with 80,000 miles.  No picture of the actual car, though.

If it were that big a danger, people wouldn't go in cars either, out of fear of being carjacked.

You don't know where I live. It's not a "might" issue. A young dude just doesn't walk around (or bike) if you have something even remotely nice, you better be ready to fight for it.

My parents decided that a brand new car doesn't make financial sense right now, so they're going to wait a little while and buy me a car.  I was given a budget of $5,000 and have found quite a few vehicles that I like within that budget.  My budget was dropped to $5,000 because of my moron brother.  Why?  I don't know.

1998 Buick Park Avenue Ultra 102,000 miles $4,900

1998 Lincoln Continental 64,000 miles $5,000

1986 BMW 635CSi 104,000 miles $4,995    <------  WANT

1995 Mercedes C-Class 95,400 miles $4,750

2003 Ford Focus Wagon 136,000 miles $4,100

1999 Buick Regal LS 101,000 miles $4,250

I like every car on the list and would consider all but the BMW.  I think the first Buick and the first Lincoln would be the best for me from an insurance/gas mileage/comfort/reliability aspect.

Please feel free to peruse the Dallas Craigslist and give me some suggestions.  Buying very very soon.
