Speaking of hand-me-downs, I want my parents to keep the A4 to make it a hand-me-down. Damn me and my imagination.

So there's a rule that says that I can't have something comfortable?  Maybe that's what I want?  Maybe I don't want something fun.  I would like something fun,but it's not necessary.

Fuck you.
That didn't make any sense. And what pisses me off is that you think I'm rolling in money and don't think I care about insurance.

That, and your BS excuses.

Exactly. CJ's parents are paying for everything. In Total. How selfish it would be to put much fiscal strain on the family, by only one person having "fun".

Granted, I'd be looking for a more fun car, that's reasonable to insure, but that's hard.

Man, fuck you. My parents aren't rich. We're comfortable but not rich. By the time you're 16 you'll have your own car. CJ does too. Guess what I have: a bicycle sitting out back. I'm going to college next year and am still going to be riding a bicycle. My parents aren't going to pay for any of my car.

I'm sorry we have a sense of fun and passion about cars while you guys would rather drive around big boats and feel sorry for yourself.
"BOOHOO I have to keep my insurance rates low!"
Look at TBR. He's going to be paying for most of his college education yet he still manages to drive something fun (Prelude). It's not that hard. CJ, you're purposefully limiting yourself because of some lame BS excuses.

I think there's been a miscommunication of viewpoints. I do want a great car, but not to the burden of my parents.

Obviously clay has quoted himself on cars. A Miata has unreasonable insurance. I quoted myself, I got some cars that I didn't think that'd be reasonable to insure, were.

This is all I know about this particular problem:

When you're young you're all about trying to act responsible and adult. You believe that you're no longer a child and have to put away childish things. You think the only way to be an adult is to mimic the actions of the adults around you.

Here's the thing: the only reason you think adults act that way is because they're doing it for you. They've been so busy providing and caring for you for the entire time that you've been able to understand anything that it's become part of their psyche. They may even think they want you to be like them.

People who live and act like this without ever examining the why of it all see behavior that provides direct personal enjoyment without any financial or educational value as selfish, or juvenile.

They couldn't be more wrong.

My friend recently bought an MX-5; I believe it only costs a few dollars more than his Civic every year, and his record is far from clean.  I can't imagine that NA MX-5s are that expensive to insure.  You're talking about a 15 year old car that wasn't that expensive to begin with.

You can have a fun and practical car that isn't killer on your insurance.  They're called hot hatches.  Now we don't have the best selection here, but there are plenty of good ones out there.  Like the Focus or the MkIV GTI (though, admittedly, hit or miss on reliability).  Both can be had at good prices.  And if he's worried about rear seat access, they make ZX5s.  And if you're worried about it getting stolen or blown to bits in a suicide bombing, it's a Ford, so it's not a big target.

Do you have ANY idea how budgets work? CJ's family isn't exactly slumming it. A car would by no means put any amount of fiscal strain on the family.

I wish I could have a Miata, I really do.  My parents wouldn't have that, though.

You need to convince him that the less people you can have in your car, the better it is because less chances of people convincing you to get in trouble.

Also, the earlier generations are slow enough were you wont' get into trouble but handle well enough where you can learn car control.. it's like an win win situation for them

Because we're almost a 4 driver family.

I was referring to all the threads that were posted about choosing a car, only to end up with this.

A Camry is a perfectly decent first car (better than mine!).  I'd still trade it for something less of a boat and more fun though.

Which leaves them with three cars, and an implied three spots in the garage.

Now supposedly real soon, a fourth vehicle will be added, putting one car out into the driveway.

Which leads me back to the original question: If CJ were to buy another car, why wouldn't he sell the Camry?

The bulk of an insurance premium is for liability coverage, which is more heavily influenced by the driver rather than the particular car.  It's collision and comp that go up when you get a newer and/or more expensive car.

My parents decided that a brand new car doesn't make financial sense right now, so they're going to wait a little while and buy me a car.  I was given a budget of $5,000 and have found quite a few vehicles that I like within that budget.  My budget was dropped to $5,000 because of my moron brother.  Why?  I don't know.

1998 Buick Park Avenue Ultra 102,000 miles $4,900

1986 BMW 635CSi 104,000 miles $4,995    <------  WANT

1999 Buick Regal LS 101,000 miles $4,250

I like every car on the list and would consider all but the BMW.  I think the first Buick and the first Lincoln would be the best for me from an insurance/gas mileage/comfort/reliability aspect.

Please feel free to peruse the Dallas Craigslist and give me some suggestions.  Buying very very soon.

Get the Volvo.  They're great cars to get if you have a limited budget.  Friends of mine have a 1990 Volvo with about 200,000 miles on it.  They've had it for the past 5 years.  It's held together with ducttape, but it makes a 100-mile round trip commute every day.
A good friend will come bail you out of jail...BUT, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, DAMN...that was fun!
