Dodge confirms Challenger Super Stock dragster
May16

For those of you that think American muscle cars are only good at going fast in a straight line, Dodge has proved you, well, right. Dodge has officially confirmed that it is readying a dragster version of its Challenger. The dragstrip-ready model should be set for a July unveiling.

According to Edmunds, the NHRA is in the final stages of approving the Challenger Super Stock's design for competition in its Stock Eliminator class.

Power for the drag-specific Challengers will be sourced from Chrysler's current lineup of HEMI engines, as well as the company's 5.9L Magnum V8. Although no horsepower numbers were mentioned, the Challenger Super Stock will be available in both manual and automatic configurations.

Because the Challenger Super Stock is intended for the strip, it will go on a pretty significant diet. The front fascia will use lighter-weight materials for support and the Challenger's hood will be swapped out for a lift-off, composite unit ? featuring a functional scoop.

According to Allpar.com, the Challenger Super Stock will also use a lightweight cooling system, a lightweight, drag-only braking system and a drop-out front crossmember.

Seats that accommodate a six-point harness and a special Body-in-White modified for drag racing will also be a part of the Challenger Super Stock package.

And because the Challenger Super Stock is only intended for the track, Dodge did away with some of the car's creature comforts, including the windshield wipers, rear seat, HVAC systems, power windows and sound deadening materials.

The end result is a Challenger that is 800 pounds light and ready for track duty.

why downsize the brakes?

On alot of drag strips they get worked pretty hard if the track is faily empty and you have little time between staging... I know my friend cooked his one night in his Firebird after 3 closely done passes.

err... maybe its not an issue since the car weighs so much less.  Probably the case.

Less weight. Lower rotational inertia. Only pansies use brakes.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Why a manual transmission?

There's still the odd Ronnie Soxer out there who'll run a stick.

well i doubt they are equiping parachutes on the back... you gotta slow down from 120mph somehow -shrug-

Actually, if you're running an IHRA track and you trap 120, you have to run a parachute; and most tracks are long enough that you only need to brake lightly anyways.

Brakes are the last place I would look to reduce weight.

haha yea. Oh well, people going tons faster without stopping power, let Darwinism take effect =P but lets hope it's by themselves :nono:

So, where do I place my order?

I doubt it will be street legal, especially since it doesn't have windshield wipers.

I'd suspect that it would be sold just like the old Hemi dart was: through dealerships, but with a disclaimer that it was a competition vehicle for off road use only.

Hemi Dart! That would put the shivering quits up all those jaunty-capped, raggedy-haired pompoms in their glitzy turbocooled toaster ovens.

Is "metaphor" an entire required class in Australian public schools, or do you just have an uncanny talent?

Shows what you know about drag racing.  This car isn't street legal.

Heck, a lot of dragsters had no front brakes at all, like this one.

Of course, the driver also sat with his legs draped over the top of the differential, and if the blower ever let go it would likely smack you in the face at 180 MPH, but what the hell, eh?

Front engine dragsters are deathtraps as far as I'm concerned.

Given that I do nothing more than drink beer, wear shorts, swim in oceans and neatly escape drop bears, I have much more time to practise my language skills.
