Bless you and your practical solution to this Aztek problem!

I don't know why you're hating on that car. The Aztek isn't cheap as the Saturns, but It offers more room, and is pretty frugal for a car of that size, and is pretty good on gas. It's just ugly.

I might be able to get him an old BMW at wholesale price if I pull some strings, but I'd prefer that he not have something small and RWD.

For some odd reason, Volvos have never been thought of poorly in the snow, not even the RWD ones.

They do very well in the snow. They're heavy.

Yeah, it's a pretty durable engine.  It's not particularly refined, but that doesn't seem to be an issue.

I was trying to see what kind of deals I could score on trade-ins at the dealership today, and lemme just say, they didn't give me answers I was expecting.  With the exception of a Saturn they had on the lot, their prices all sucked -- hardcore suckage.

Both.  Base models had the old pushrod Vulcan.  Big spenders got the vastly better 24 valve Duratec.

I guess so.  My mother once had a 1997 Ford Taurus GL with the 3.0 Vulcan.  While there were no actual reliability issues with the engine, it still sounded as rough as a cement mixer.  The Clunk-O-Matic slushbox didn't help matters, either.

I disagree 100%. We used to have a 1987 740 GLE wagon, and it would never be able to go up the minor incline into our garage, and couldn't make it up many hills. My parents are "unthusiasts," so they may not have used the best techniques, but that car sure as hell was bad in the winters here (which were worse then too, they've become pretty tame as of late...).

I do recommend them though, while not very good in the snow, it refused to die. The 'rents traded it in for $700 when they got the Allroad.

the Teuton

I think the only car that can truly satisfy him for the price is a Taurus wagon.  The Volvos are all too old and everything else is either too small or too expensive.  I found a 2002 Chevy Prizerolla, but he said it was too small, so I'm running out of ideas, to be honest.

The supercharger on the Corrado was recently rebuilt and it's an auto, but I laid my foot down on it.  I can't see how it would be especially reliable.

What about the GM 3100 cars?  I found a Malibu, and while I personally hate them, would the car be a decent buy?

I found a 2.4 Grand Am, but then I remembered Hemi's issues.  We had a 3300 Oldsmobile, and no one makes parts for them and I hated that car, so a 3300 will never work.  The 3400 in our minivan is prone to tons of problems, so that'd be another 'no.'

The 3800 is a great engine, but it's hard to find on the cheap and the 3100 is the great unknown to me.

This one is really out of left field, but my brother essentially needs a reliable, fairly all-weather vehicle that can haul all of his crap (as I explained earlier).  Tonight, we were checking out some of the local shed lots (thanks, Madman) and we found a 1997ish Nissan Pathfinder that had a ton of rust, but by all indications, had its engine replaced sometime during its life (it had a tag under the hood -- it was unlocked).  It had 4WD and it was auto, and while I worry about gas consumption, it just may be a safe, reliable, and cheap enough pick.

The current frontrunner is a Taurus wagon I have to call about on Monday, but he very well may be the only person buying an SUV in a soon to be $5 a gallon market.  It helps that everyone is selling them, too.

He also said he wouldn't be opposed to a Cherokee, but we shall see.
