If water cooling has diluted the 911 then so did turbochargers and AWD.

I can see it now.....UP! based 911. Seats four, rear-engined, and more "pure" than the current one. Call it the 901 (Get permission from Peugeot) like it was supposed to be in the first place.

Seats 4? Screw that. 2 seater!

Ah, I completely forgot that the VW Up! had a rear engine drivetrain :ohyeah: Any word on the development status?

My VW guy saying that they're hoping for a late 09 intro as a 10 model.  But, he could be blowing smoke up my ass, since he says his reps don't give any concrete information on it.

Actually, that's not as crazy as it sounds.  It couldn't be called a 911, though.  But a reincarnated 356 based on the UP! platform would certainly take Porsche back to it's roots.  Do a retro-styled Speedster version and watch 'em fly out the doors of Porsche showrooms all over the world!

They were Europe's answer to the GM B-Bodies- only up to three times as costly, and with more brittle construction.

And with far fewer awesome points.

C'mon, just try and tell me the Ferrari V8 powered Lancia Thema 8.32 wasn't awesome!

Very true.

The list of B-body cars here, however, has me coming over all a-quiver, and taller lying down than standing up.

Now we're talking  I don't know if Porsche may be entirely disinterested in bringing back the 356 name (I don't think they do that at Porsche), but the name "Porsche Speedster" does have a nice ring to it, even if it does border on false advertising

Exactly. Since when is the B-body Brittle?

No one said the B-body was brittle, it was said that the Euro competition (Fiat, Lancia, etc) was more expensive and more brittle than the B-body.

My most sincere of apologies.  I intended to refer to the GM H Body, which replaced the GM B-Body in most instances.

My family owned a B-Body 1981 Olds Delta 88 Royale- it was a treasured pet for many years in our clan.

Ok.  I will admit that that is kind of cool.  Tell me though- would you be able to tell it was a Lancia without the badge on the grille or trunk?

AltinD

^^ The grill is classic Lancia. You couldn't mistaken one for a FIAT Chroma, let alone a Alfa 164 or a Saab 9000.

I know Lancia is the original, but Mitsubishi used a similar grille on its cars in the 90's through 2001-ish

Madman

Hyundai must have liked the Lancia Thema, too.  After all, they did blatantly copy it when designing the 1989 Sonata.

Other than the fact that both are front-wheel drive midsize sedans with shoddy build quality, I don't see the similarity.   ;)
