Hey, do you need a motorcycle license to drive a Can Am Spyder?  There are a bunch of them at a dealership near me and I really want to drive one.

Yes. So far, I am not aware of any DMV that recognizes tricycles as anything but motorcycles.

Yup, you need a valid bike license.  Also, in a number of places if you take your motorcycle road test on a trike, your license is only good for operating trikes (you cannot operate a bike).

Raza, just sign up for the MSF course. It takes one weekend, and at the end you'll have a permit, if not a license (depends on the state)

Plus for $250 you hypothetically get to find out if you are really cut out for it, and enjoy it, rather than blowing thousands on a bike only to find out you suck.

Are those any good on the street?

I want a bike again now, seeing as my backpack is so huge I could stuff some pants in there and I wear a jacket almost all the time anyways.

Just the parents in the way...

Worth 5 times that much if you seriously plan on riding.

Oh, cool.  Free is more like it.  $250 is almost a car payment.  I can't burn that on something I may or may not do when I may or may not have a job in the foreseeable future.

Oh come on, even I'm thinking of doing it...

I should ask the parents though... even if I don't get a motorcycle for a year or two I'd have the permit/license.

Do you need to bring your own helmet and stuff?

Probably depends on who is running it, but while I brought my own helmet I could have borrowed one for the class.

In MN you needed to bring your own helmet, long sleeve, long pants, gloves (anything works, gardening gloves, batting gloves, etc) and footwear that covers the ankles.

So a winter jacket or a sweater would work?

I have gloves, I'd need the shoes.

Similar for us, minus the helmet.

One kid had to leave during the first day because he was wearing leather shoes, not boots, and he couldn't get replacements in time.

You only hit 12-18mph for the entire course, so even if you manage to screw up and lay it down you aren't likely to be damaged too badly.  Of course they wouldn't discourage wearing a motorcycle jacket...

You don't have a car and insurance payment that is eating away at your life savings either.  Nor do you have parents that would completely cut you off if you bought a motorcycle.

I don't understand why you're trying to say that it's a good thing you have that car payment. Why did you buy so much car without a job? Honestly as a finance major I would expect you to buy a crappy 3k car and drive that till you have a job that pays regularly and not paying for a car from your savings. Just sayin, don't blame the fact you can't get a motorcycle on the fact that you made an arguable bad decision on the price of a car.

I'm not saying it's a good thing that I have a car payment.  I'm saying that I have a car payment, one that I took on based on expected future cash flows (how was I supposed to know the world was going to end 10 days ago?), and can't afford to drop $250 on an investment that may not have a return.

Don't talk to me like you know what the fuck you're talking about.

So anyways, I've been thinking more and more how awesome and convenient it would be to have a motorcycle instead of my car up here at college. My sister has said numerous times she would much rather have my car than her Saturn Ion. So she could just take my car and sell hers, and then I could buy a motorcycle.

Anyways, what tips would you guys have that I could use as ammo when I go home over Thanksgiving to try and talk my dad into letting me take a MSF and then buy a motorcycle later on? I have brought it up before and he has said no, but my mom is pretty indifferent. She had a scooter when she was in high school and college.

If I could buy I would probably get a SV650 as my first pick, and then probably the 2008 ninja 250. The pre-2008 ones look awful IMO in comparison.

And yes I said the 250s were horrible earlier in this thread, but they have grown on me, regretfully.
